  • I spent a small fortune on a new iPad Pro so that I could get the matte Nano-Texture screen option-in hopes that it would be a better drawing experience than the standard glossy display. In this video, I share my findings and overall thoughts about the 2024 iPad Pro as a creative tool for a professional illustrator.

    I ordered one with the standard finish. It's great to hear how much you like the new matte finish, but I've actually gotten used to working on the glossy screen without a screen protector. The trick I've found is cleaning it before I use it to remove any finger grease. Finger grease seems to be what makes drawing on the bare glass subpar. I've gotten used to it now and don't even think about going back to a screen protector, plus I get to see the full dynamic range, which I missed when I was using one. Mine is arriving in a few days. Or there is an even more logical answer, they have the sales data from past sales, and they know that the 2 most popular choise is the full minimalistic (min RAM, min Storage, min CPU cores) and the full maximalist (max RAM, max Storage, max CPU cores, and every other possible options). So they just simplificied the lineup to not premanufacture things, what nobody will ever buy, even if it's possible (like max RAM but min Storage and min CPU cores, or any of this unusual combo, if they only sold 10 previously from this kind, they can ignore this, not worth to manufacturing and doing the logistic to travel this models all around the world.. they are manufacruring models in millions of amount, just to add one extra choise to sell 10 more is meanigless, it's more complicated to choose for those who are already confused which one to choose)

    I received my 2TB iPad Pro with nano texture yesterday and returned it the same day. I'm sure that I personally would be annoyed by the display every time I used it. I want the best display and pay good dollar for it, so I don't want to cover it up with a screen protector or a nano texture. Besides that it seems the nano display is a magnet for fingerprints and the cloth is not able to remove them as easy as one might think. Also the text seems to be a bit more blurry. In a few days I will get my money refunded after which I can order the right version.
    I'm glad that you like it though, but I missed if it did feel like for example paperlike or not?
    Does it actually feel as if you get some 'resistance' from the screen or is it smooth like the 'normal' screen?
    I hear some people say it even smoother than the normal glass?

    Thank you for the great videos! I found yours among the best, especially in seeing the things I needed to see in deciding on nano or not. It's amazing how just about all of the videos on the nano textured screen are from an artists point of view and that's the one thing my ipad will never be used for, haha (I don't have that talent). I bought the nano tech for aviation in using the ipad as a kneeboard with Foreflight. Even on cloudy days, you're normally above them in the sun. My only other ipad (1st gen 12.9) will stay in my studio. If any other pilots, student to airline captains are thinking about it, I will say at first I only had glare in mind in making my decision, but if you've never flown at night, the reflections on a glossy screen from your dash lights are so much worse than sun glare since your kneeboard is of course, on your leg, and the perfect again for all those reflections.

    • @danhoven
      @danhoven 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I bought the 2tb with cell and wifi. My main reason for the upgrade in the first place was space, and for years I've had to constantly delete video footage to make room and the back and fourth from pc (itunes) is torture. Also, if you already have to spring for the 1tb, and you can see yourself using it (easy for me to fill that in a month) then 2tb isn't that bad a wallet bite. I'll stick to my pc for my video editing, but my ipad is a major briefcase for me to store and present my videos. If it wasn't for space, I would still be very content with 1st gen 12.9. Nano was a very nice bonus! Cell data is only for aviation purposes and a HUGE hardware difference that no one ever mentions on their videos (since it's not ever in specs), but only an ipad with the cell data option will have the hardware chip for GPS. Most aviators will use a separate ADS-B to provide weather, traffic, etc, but cell data is nice being able to update your weather imagery charts (that an ads-b won't do) on those long flights, or if grounded with long unexpected delays.

    Hi Chris, great video as always! I know this video is about the nano screen, and I wish I could but I still cannot justify the additional $$$$. I have been looking everywhere for a good screen protector for my new IPad. The last version I bought is not available anymore, most brands have updated their matte texture to a “nano” version I have tried two already and they suck. I tried Paperlike ($44.99) and MOBDIK paper Nano film ($10.98) and they both feel like plastic on glass 😖 not as bad as the screen naked, but the experience, is horrible. I keep going back to my old IPad to draw.
    Can you make one last video for screen protectors for us who cannot afford the nano screen IPad? Or will you please recommend your last favorite screen protector? You have few videos reviewing different kinds but would love to try the last version you’ve loved. Thank you in advance… Big fan of your videos and creativity, btw 🥰

    Hello and thanks for the nice review! Not a professional illustrator, but I like messing around with Japanese calligraphy. I noticed that the nanotexture cover, that I like very much for the display quality, gives none to almost none friction compared to glossy screen. All the "paperlike" matte screen protectors that I use on older iPads and other device have a stronger feedback. Did you compare your older matte display protectors with the nanotexture one? Would be nice to know your opinion on that. Thanks!

    I’ll definitely be going with the default glossy display. TONS of drawbacks on the Nano-Texture version, the main one being how it basically gimps the whole reason of buying an OLED screen. Less inky blacks, less contrast, washed out colors and less sharpness (even for text). Gotta pay significantly more just to have nano-texture, not to mention having to worry about the finely textured surface from eroding over time with all the pen scraping and hand oils. Gonna be expensive and time consuming to replace as well. All of this in addition to the likely incompatibility with third party screens and protectors. And once you go nano, you’re basically stuck with it even if you end up preferring the glossy version because it can’t easily be replaced. The anti-glare is only useful basically for creators who work with it outdoor in bright day conditions. It’s easy enough to reduce glare indoors with a simple adjustment of the screen angle and/or lighting.
    Just go with the cheaper default glossy version, and if you ever need antiglare or a matte surface, put on a temporary third party screen or protector until you don’t have any further need for it. It’s a no-brainer really.

    Can you clarify something for me? The nano feels better to touch because our fingers don't "stick" to it. I'm assuming this is what you like about the nano glass, but how is the texture itself when drawing with the pencil? I tried it in store, and found the smooth and nano glass to be more similar than different while drawing. Meaning that it doesn't have that scratchy paper like tooth to it. It has some feeling, but it doesn't quite live up to the expectation of what I had hoped it would be. Instead it's more of a very fine texture that doesnt have as much feeling while drawing as say a "paper-like" or similar branded screen protector. BUT it does still slide better, for example when using your fingers to touch the screen. Can you confirm this? What are your thoughts on the texture itself while drawing? I found them to be quite similar, especially once both nano and standard get coated by the oils in our skin. They behaved quite similarly at that point, although touch was slightly better on the nano due to less contact drag.

    • @chris-piascik
      @chris-piascik  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I don't like the feeling of sticking to the glass. This surface is smooth when sliding across it. Although the texture is subtle for drawing it makes all the difference for me. I hate drawing on the glossy screen. I love drawing on this screen.

    • @DwindleFlip
      @DwindleFlip 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@chris-piascik Yeah I felt like the texture was too subtle so I went with the standard. I have a Wacom Cintiq Pro 27 with etched glass and I love it but in the store I just feel like the nano was not as textured as I hoped it would be. I'm still debating on on keeping the standard or returning and getting the nano. I too prefer to draw on etched glass. At the same time the smooth glass is visually nicer. It's a tough call. I figured I could always put a screen protector on the smooth glass if i wanted but I could never remove the nano glass if I wanted clarity and sharpness back :) I appreciate your response, and thank you for making the video. I know many have been waiting for an artists review of the two glass options.

    As a warning, the nano texture with scratch. You'll have no idea how it happened, but the coating that they use (Samsung as well) to make it less reflective is so so prone to micro scratches. It's the coating, not the glass, but it drove me insane on my phone and steam deck and I ended up putting a screen protector over them.
    I'm like you where I can't stand to touch the smooth glass and drawing on it is the worst. I've got the esr magnetic protector on its way.

    • @TheKatieCakez
      @TheKatieCakez 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chris-piascikI don't know if it's exactly the same, but it's very similar. I did the unthinkable and took my fingernail and scratched it on the tippy top corner and it juuuuuust went into the coating and left microscratches. So I returned it. After all of the s24 ultra reviews saying how scratch resistant the screen was, I went naked with it for about a week and like day 10 I had two scratches and lost my mind.
      It sucks because I wanted to enjoy a device without a SC wen protector for the first time since iPhone 2,but it wasn't worth the risk. No matter how careful you are, it's too expensive to risk it!

    The nano surface not reflecting room lighting that interferes with viewing the iPad screen……
    Is the nano surface different/better than a textured screen protector for taming room light reflection?
    Or is the whole package of the screen technology less reflective and cause less eye strain?

    I got the nano version and have been drawing for a few hours. This will replace my 2018 iPad Pro. Definitely a noticeably better drawing experience. I think the biggest difference is how your hand feels gliding across the screen when you use the pencil - it really improves the control and flow of strokes compared to stickier glass. The pencil tip feel is more secondary and change but also improved. That being said unless your were already going to get 1TB for the ram it’s not worth that yuge an upgrade alone.
    I really like the look of matte screen. It’s about as good as my old 2018 iPad Pro, the oled making up for the losses caused by the matte glass effect. The 2018 iPad Pro still looks fantastic.

      Yes, it’s the “nano-texture” matte option available on the 1 and 2tb versions of the 2024 iPad Pro.

    I'm curious how the apple sounds on the nano texture? Does it sound like you're drawing on paper? ✏

      It’s pretty quiet not much sound.

    Good vid. Thanks the intel. Someday when I need to replace my 2023 M2 iPad Pro 12.9 that I draw on and teach digital drawing I’ll get one,…. But right now my “old” device and a Paperlike cover will more than do me. Plus when I draw or read on my iPad I rarely hold it, so the new lighter model doesn’t matter.

    I have downgraded to an 11 inch size. I find convenience of portability much more needed than trying to wheel the 13 inch size. I’m more likely to draw and use the iPad, but I will look into the pencil tips that are in your links.

    Replaced my 12.9 pro from 2018 with the new 13” and 256gb M4pro. I have no need for 1tb of memory just to get this textured glass. I’ll try some pencil tips instead - and yeah Apple, hows about a black pencil pro and charging brick!

    So. For drawing the nano is better, and for consuming the normal?

      I'd say so.

      @chris-piascik But would you say, you can better consume with the nano than you can better draw with the normal one?

      @lloydreed4721 if you are just consuming the regular is better. But got my preference in drawing, I like the nano texture.

    Thank you so much, finally someone tell me does this nano texture replace paper like screen protectors. I live in small town in Russia and I will not have any options try it myself before buying.
    Because nobody talk about this issue, I was close to buy regular iPad and paper like screen protector. Thanks ones again to help me make the choice 😊

      It's not as textured as some-but-I hate drawing on the glossy screen. I love drawing on this screen.

    Hey Chris, thanks for the video. Did your previous ipad have an M1 or M2 chip? Which gen was it?

      It was the M1 from 2021, I forget the gen at the moment…
