- This is a drag race for the ages. The latest BMW M3 against the latest Audi RS 5 - well sort of - the Audi RS 5 was facelifted in 2020 but the car is actually 3 years old.
Nevertheless, we won't let the facts get in the way of a great drag race. Will the all-wheel-drive Audi get the jump on BMW's rear-wheel-drive M3 on the notoriously slippery launchpad at Saldhana airfield? Ciro and Ash lineup against each other in a static race and then a rolling race.

The M3 must have had a defect or Ash didn't engage it properly. I've seen loads of drag races with the new M3's and M4', they lauch like bullets.

You're wrong dude, the New Audi Rs5 face-lift model, will still be kicking out only 444bhp,which is a huge error, as bmw & merc comparisons are both over 500hp.

The M3 launches in 2nd gear to avoid massive wheel spin, that's why it's so 'slow' off the line. If you monitor the info cluster, you will see '2''.

No the M3 can do way way better it did imppresive times in the 1/4 mile 11.4 seconds and 3.6 seconds to 62 mph

@@stevem2323 fwd? its got a torsen centre diff, not a haldex like the A3... so not possible... Torsen centre diff saps alot of drivetrain loss, hence above 120-140km/h it starts to get left behind

The fact is the drive trains not new vs old, awd it's better in dig race than the rwd..no traction loss or wheel spinning..

I have the A5 3.2 V6 Quattro from 2008 manual gearbox 150,000 km's on the clock. 2nd owner and I hope to have it until I am 90 plus yrs old as it is so much fun and 1.5 tonnes of comfort and races down country lanes with 265bhp. That sound I get from putting my foot down is crazy addictive! Oldschool naturally aspirated engine I had to comment. Lol

@@goodlife39 a v6 can never match a straight 6, when the xdrive comes out it will destroy that RS since VW doesnt plan on making a new engine they will just improve this old V6 a bit the power wont magically jump to the levels that this BMW is producing, and people have also been finding out that tis S58 engine is being held back quiet a bit, it can easily reach 570hp/425kw with just a software update.
1 can safely say BMW are holding back the M3/4 and only wanted to release the xdrive models after seeing how the C63 does, i bet you my hat that when the c63 numbers come out BMW will release the xdrive M3/4 with similar power since the will be able to put it down thanks to 4wd

Please provide stats 0-100 and 1/4, anyway the outcome as expected on the dig race the AWD has advantage of no loss of traction unlike RWD, then on the roll race things get interesting, S58 engine proves it's power it was gaping more, this is the same engine fitted on M versions of SUV's, ..thanks for the video

Well it should given the huge power advantage the AWD system is a hindrance on a rolling race as it eats power. I am more impressed with the end if life RS5 what a machine held its own in the rolling race and utterly destroyed the Beemer in the drag

@@m3bmw507 the M5 competition extreme saloon vs regular RS6 it should win it has much more power and its the lighter car as the RS6 is a stationwagon. I doubt there would be the same result when the RS6 performance is released. Strange the M5 competition is the only one available outside Germany as the regular M5 is pretty slow. We've already seen how the RS6 goes with a mild ECU remap, it totally wrecked the new E63s so it should be pretty competitive against the M5 competition. Tell me why are you so aggressive?
Plenty of ppl overseas are getting the G80 M3/M4 to launch pretty well....think Saldahna being a piss poor surface is the issue and Ash's skills at launching lol
This should be the M3 XDrive and the RS5, you will never beat a car that can put power down through all four wheels.
If you put the X-drive version, it's obviously going to win since it has more power. But there are RWD cars out there that can outperform AWD. It's only fair for these two. More power with less traction and lighter vs Less power with more traction but heavier.
I've had a few AWDs and they don't come anywhere near my s2000 and F80 M3 in terms of fun. I get a kick out of the rear slipping every now and then. It would be very interesting to see an AWD m3 tho and it the form of a hatch even better 😁

Yeah... no. Latest M & M Performance 6 cylinder engines are absolute powerhouses. Fastest in their category, every time. The RS5 got destroyed in the rolling race and this has almost nothing to do with the transmission - the engine is just way better (and more powerful, to be fair). Same thing happens with the M340i. The new RS5 will be no match for the M3 xDrive, rolling race or drag race.
@@uport2 RS5 is a great choice in this category it has quattro and amazing design interior and exterior and quality just makes you feel more premium and enough power to make you happy i know BMW is faster at rolling, but when it comes to better daily sport car Audi is the winner i don't care about rolling if BMW faster by 1 sec or 2 or even 3 it doesn't make sense being faster by these few sec makes it a better choice that what i meant PLUS BMW DESIGNERS ARE KILLING THE DESIGN (F Series was way better looking in my opinion )

It did 0.60 in 3.6 seconds and a 1/4 mile of 11.4 seconds that's faster than the RS5 and even the RS6
You got to also remember that the audi weights more and has about 70 hp less

That’s on a prepped drag strip not real world situation. The m3 will never realize those numbers on street where it matters

You can't manage so much power on rear wheel drive only. You would have to be on a grippier race track with racing tires in order to get better launch. The xdrive will be much faster off the start though as we've seen with the bmw 8 xdrive

Nope! Most anyone can launch the RS5 it is error free, every time violent epic launches. Stage one tune it eadyvto get 550hp for 1000 GBP and it will smoke the M3 in any roll race too.

Sounds like you need to get its Haldex checked out. Ran into a similar issue with my S3 and it turned out its calibration was reset incorrectly.

There's an incredible amount of axle tramp when you full out launch it, never have I ever experienced wheel spin like this from an AWD it's horrible.

@@asum307 They (S3’s) are snappy off the line, even in stock form, but I reckon a healthy GLA 45 should be seeing them off. Not sure how heavy the GLA is in comparison to the A45, but that 2.0 from Mercedes is potent. If you’re getting axle tramp (wheel hop?), then that Haldex system is definitely not healthy 😁 Sorry to hear about the issues with it. Expect better from a Merc!
@@gordoredpb9 Oops! I came down with man flu last night and decided I needed a good day & night of rest. He he.
The thing was, the Merc did beat him off the line to about 60, (Kilometers) then it came past and stayed ahead. I have draggy and have measured a best 0-100 run of about 5 seconds, which imo, is considerably off the manufacturers claim of 4.4.
I have an A6 3.0 bi turbo, and the launch control with those Quattro systems is a thing of beauty, wet or dry you just don't get wheel spin.
Fortunately the Merc goes for a service this week, and I'll be bringing it to their attention. Sadly, the car ran out of warranty 3 month's ago!

New M3 Competition does the quarter mile in 11.6-11.8 seconds @ ~125mph. Even with the usual RWD start, you were supposed to reel him all the way in and be going 5-7mph faster by the line. The RS5 is fast off the line and that’s it. It’s not a match for the G80 M3.

What I am trying to say is that BMW M are now dominating the competition between AMG and RS in these segments
The RS4 is the direct competitor of the M3 but do this again when the XDrive arrives. It would be a great idea to change lanes when doing these drags coz I think that was a very poor start from that BMW might be the road surface or the drive. Ask Mat Watson from #carwow how this is done #justsaying.

As a current M4 owner every time I watch a M3 or M4 vs RS5 video I feel more and more like going to a Audi dealership and just buy a RS5. Based on the new M3 and M4's price the four wheel drive versions will be priced over R2mil and for that amount of money you can buy a propper Porsche...
I have an rs5 and I love it. I dont care that the g80/82 is a little faster. I think the Audi just looks better especially for a 4 year old platform. I looked at g82 and I liked it but the front just made it not worth trading my Audi in for. Now the f80 and f82 are sharp looking.
I own a 2022 RS5 and it's a beast. Was about to get the M4 but thankfully I didn't. Not saying it's a bad car, but the quattro is just amazing
The guy driving bmw is an audi fan, honestly that bimmer will destroy that audi. I mean I cnt celebrate taking off fast while knowing that u gonna definitely pass me. That bimmer is brutal. Period
That M3 is easy on the eye compared to the M4 Coupe.Audi RS's are extremely underrated and they're somehow better option to the other two German supercars.The upcoming BMW M3 x-drive should be a fitting competitor to the RS.Awesome coverage though.

Definitely, I've seen videos of it rocket, but sometimes BMW Launch Control just doesn't want to work. It's very temperamental.

Yeah but with X drive comes weight too! geez that M3 competition got destroyed. The RS5 is violent in a drag, it did the same to the new M4 competition too.5 years on and it still looks better than the goofy Beemer
AWD vs RWD is all what Iam saying to this and the rolling race told you which one is faster on the German Autobahn for example…..the RS5 is the only RS car which is able to keep up with its rivals from BMW and Mercedes…..the new RS6 and RS7 for example are by far the slowest cars of its class….they both get humiliated by a E63 S and M5 Competition
@@m3bmw507 mate the RS6 and 7 in the real world are pretty close to the M5 competition and don't forget BMW are putting their most extreme version out against a factory standard RS6 station wagon. The RS6 and 7 performance will be released soon as that V8 has huge tuning headroom. Just look at Throttle House TH-cam video, just tweaked the ECU map on the RS and it totally destroyed the E63s. It's coming mate.
Back to the RS5 its at the end of its life but yiu can still easily map it to 550hp and 600lb/ft torque no mechanical changes other than an air intake. That is easily enough to see off either M3 or M4 comp in a rolling race. Funny to hear so many BMW fan boys clamouring for Quattro on their beloved RWD perfect driving machines though.
One final point the Xdrive will add weight and drive train inertia so the massive 60hp advantage the Me comp has over the old RS5 in the roll will not be as significant.
