A recent stream where I walk down memory lane and talk a little about my time flying the Kiowa Warrior. -- Watch live at / casmotv #kiowawarrior #oh58d
Watched the stream live. Was awesome to see it in action. AI Pilot UI is great, the transition from hover to forward motion looked super smooth. Was also great to see some tricks to get the laser guided rockets a little bit more range. Can't wait to get this onto my server so I can take it for a fly. Thanks for giving us internet peasants an early look @Casmo.
Always love seeing pictures from time in service. I never took any and no one I knew did either. So there are almost 3 years of service with time in Afghanistan and no photographic evidence it ever happened. I think the only picture ever taken was after a Humvee hit an IED and turned into scrap metal but no one was seriously injured.
Great video as always Casmo and its made me realise that the Kiowa is probably going to be my main helo going forward. I can see me getting much more out of this enjoyment wise than i do the Apache(nothing wrong with the Apache, I just don't get much enjoyment out of fighting it). Its amazing how far your videos have come since the days of watching you low level fighting in the the shark to a few viewers! I've learned so much about fighting helicopters from you I couldn't even quantify it now so a big thanks fella!
The way you described VRS made me think of quicksand. Something a lot of people have an irrational fear of, having seen it used in a bunch of old movies and TV shows, but not something that comes up very often in real life.
On my Lil experience, 800 hours, you really have to work hard to get in vrs, settling with power is similar but different. Anyway in dcs unfortunately especially with Huey and Mi8 is very easy to get in trouble, but also wind is not really modeled very well, is more like turbulence. And MP server turned down the wind direction so is very hard for elicopter to benefit of the lifting factor of into wind flying.
As a crew chief, only ever experienced it once. We were at high altitude and low speed and the pic caught it immediately. I don't think anyone else even noticed.
My theory is because most real world pilots wont exp it untils its a problem they dont survive. In dcs every helicopter pilot has "died" 100x times from it. They also learn how to avoid it for how many hours before entering the bird, we learn from "what just happened?".
@matthewjackson5325 wind in dcs is not realistic, in real life wind is life, landing and take off into wind is life, especially if heavy and low power available in hot day, a breeze of wind make so much of a difference. In DCS no. Soon maybe....
This is awesome! These are really cool details at the beginning of the stream that I will try to use in my scripts for Kiowa. Have a nice day! Really interesting video!
I always find the argument about helpers funny. So people are worried someone will "abuse" the simplified AI flight mode, which is actually a sub par imitation of a COPILOT that you have in the real aircraft! What's there to "abuse"?! If you want an advantage fly realistically with a real human CP/G in the left seat or PLT in the right seat. Nobody "abusing" the AI will have the slightest chance, against a well oiled human team... or is flying the KW with two humans considered "abusing" the Multicrew capability to have an advantage over the poor players that don't have a human copilot? 🤔
I laughed at the flightsuit comment. The only thing I liked about going to Saudi was wearing the desert flightsuit (more comfortable than green) with the boonie hat and desert boots (not authorized on flights but we wore them anyways). But you are right, if you were out in the Riyadh sun or in the Khobar humidity, the onesie got really hot and you'd sweat like a pig.
VRS, haha. They say it's pretty hard to get a Cessna 172 into a spin as well. That's good to know. I never did spin training and I'm glad my CFI drilled it in my head how to avoid inadvertently getting into one! AND what to do if I did lol😂 This bird looks like it's going to be a dream to fly in VR!
Okay, that M4 in the pic at 12:00 is actually kinda interesting. That looks like a pretty basic free-float handguard that would have been commercially available at the time (Essentially just an aluminium tube with some holes drilled in it). Some unit armorer must have decided to get a little creative because while it's not especially difficult to do at an armorer level, it's not as simple as taking the standard clamshell handguards off and slapping a new one on.
Could see you really enjoyed flying this helo. Thank you for all the detailed explanations. It helps us appreciate all the details in the real helo and what the devs has carried over to dcs.
re: Gazelle flightmodel: the old one at least, I don't know about the new one, does not match *any* inputs in *any* mode. There is not even the slightest conversation to be had about whether it's plausible or accurate because it wasn't at the point where you would have that conversation. Perhaps the new model is better. Someone made an YT video trying to correlate inputs but I can't remember the title.
Yeah that caught me by surprise as well, because, due to the way it's modelled in DCS, I equated it with Stall/Spin accidents in fixed wings. There's a damn good reason that's talked about so much!!! As a real world GA pilot for over two decades and a flight simmer for over three, I find these videos of actual pilots using/flying the simulations that I've grown to love (and sharing their real world experiences)......INVALUABLE! Casmo is one of many TH-camrs that I appreciate 👍🏾
Thanks for sharing some of your real life experiences and I really like your attitude regarding this is a sim/game so some discussions does not make any sense. I’m glad that the flight model feels smooth and believable for somebody like you that have done it for real. So much looking forward to the release and learning to fly it 😊
Sounds like they updated some of the sounds of missile/rocket launches compared to a few days ago, absolutely love how they sound now compared to before
When You showed the photo with old 50cal., I realized, why they've chosen the shape for its representation on the MFD. Awesome info and video. When You are in a cockpit with Your buddy, You really are a tall guy. Holy shit. :-D Almost didn't fit.
Thank you for saying it out loud. VRS implementation is not a big deal in real life helicopter flying. You may practice it once in training so you know what it feels like…but you fly to avoid it anyway.
Well funny enough I was never an IP in the army. Always wanted to but didn’t go to school cause I was mostly commissioned and not a warrant officer except for a short period of time
Excellent video - saw you over on Ward Carrol's page. Was an SH-60B/F crewman for 18 years and stole around 500 hours up in the front seat - we carried some Kiowas aboard our Frigate back in the Earnest Will days - wanted SO badly to enjoy that bird. WISH I could afford DSC and play.
The flight model looks sooooo fucking good, I'm excited I can't wait! Love the weight and balance that is hilarious! Again thanks for doing all these videos man, it has been hyping me up and giving me some good material. cant wait for the manual to drop.
Your rant about the simplicity of the laser codes and radio selection in the Kiowa vs the Apache is the same as the feelings I have about ipads in new cars vs having my old corolla's buttons and knobs 😭
I placed all of my Apache Missions in the valley you just placed the enteties. IMO is a great area on the syria map. Nice vid. as always! Can´t wait for the Kiowa...
One question: Isn´t it hard to have two men on the controls? I mean, the left seater at some point needs to have his hand on his cyclic to do his stuff. Wasn´t there the tendency to interfere with the pilot flying?
Awesome video sad to see Kiowas in the state they are in after being a war bird to being dart recovery birds we got a Kiowas that has been through it at my unit
Biggest problem I see, Unless you're doing a mission designed on doing a OH58 specific thing...the OH58 is nothing more than a 1 trick pony in dcs, which is the biggest problem with DCS with most of these modules.
ASV stands for Armored Security Vehicle. Its a Vietnam relic that they pulled back into service for Iraq... Usually a MP unit doing Route Security would be equipped with them. Duel mount with a 50. BMG and MK19 GL. Lightly armored and just protected against small arms and long range MGs.
About your comment on the VPForce Rhino: I got mine about 2 months ago and I absolutely love it. It's worth every penny. I fly a lot of rotary wing and it's just incredible for that. I find myself turning the force trim off in the Huey a lot and flying without it. I got the chance to fly a real UH-1H last summer and my Rhino setup feels VERY close to how the real one did.
With that gun pod, was that something where you could peel off, land and try to un-jam yourself, or did you just have to curse at it and fly back to base?
I was an OG bootleg. Was there when the deep magic was written. Started the tradition with the Flasks. I was supposed to come back and take command of B troop but stuff got mixed up.
@CasmoTV that's badass. My buddy rex and eli still have their flasks. I was a dark angel from 11 to 17 and a crusader from 18 to 22. You OGs fueled me to the darkside. I'm now a bluewolf! I'm sure, saber is in my near future.
Unfortunately it can't see obstacles, totally ignores beeing fired upon and needs to be told everything... but it's good at holding a stable hover, yep. That's definitely a big advantage in a hot combat zone, when the bullets rake the sand in front of your hovering aircraft.😂
What was the toughest threat to the Kiowa/Apache in Iraq back in the day? We know they didn't really have MANPAD's, so was it some 23 mm mounted on Toyotas or something?
@@CasmoTV Not much of a threat really apart from the hangry one. With dudes with rifles hiding in unexpected places you'd rather have a canon on a turret rather than gun pods. Wouldn't you say?

ED flight models force the community to overthink VRS.

We had a guy in Iraq carrying a blue spear on a rocket rocket and hit a dude in the chest with it. EPIC SHOT

I'm surprised VRS is not talked about as a fixed-wing pilot Spins/ stalls is always talked about each caused by a pilot screwing up
