I know this reveals how ancient I am, but I remember how big a deal this game was to some people when it came out like it was yesterday. The hype behind it before release, being able to "play god", every magazine talking about every single detail. It didn't pull me away from Civ for very long but I still have love for it.
I remember I adored this game when it came out. I don’t think I was able to finish it (not for the lack of trying) though, and my tenuous grasp of English didn’t help. I think what pulled me in in those early years was the creature and everything with it.
Don’t put yourself down us who played this and it’s expansion when it came out loved it. If anyone knows where to buy the hard copy let me know. It can’t be digitally downloaded anymore or pirated. Man this bring me back
We will never get another game like this. The newer generations will never know the struggle we had to endure. Staying up all night to play this game and then going to school at 8. Then we rinse and repeat the whole school year on 3 hours of daily naps. We graduated tho, so yolo.

Agreed. The thing that I think they neglected in the game is the actual "RTS"-element of the game. Like, it's kind of slow when you lose your creature and if you can't conjure or find material to expand the village (which is all you can do to my knowledge...?), you're stuck.
I think I have the first one laying around in an old box somewhere but I never got the second one. The PC wasn’t up to par when it came out unfortunately. What did You think of the second one when you first played it?
feeding your creature blue mushrooms is how you get it big i think thers a few on every island .thats also how you impress the jackass on the 1st island
I had no idea! I always thought the creature took so much time to grow. I know you can put your creature through a rigorous training program with rocks and such but didn't know how to get him to grow more (except horizontally 😅)
You could also get lucky with the fireflies and get a large growth miracle. Although if I remember right there was a bug on the first island where they didn't spawn without a patch under objects without a patch.

This was one of the biggest games of my childhood, such a good game. Obviously not as polished as I remember it playing it this time around but I can't really fault it for that. I'm going to try out the second one as well, haven't played that more than a couple of minutes.

Wow, I played this so much but never picked anything besides the tiger. I was so surprised to see the Guide creature was a bear. Was always a lion for me. Turns out it changes with the creature you pick. I always figured it was a lion because of Lionshead Studios. Turns out I just really liked that tiger pet.
This game was absolutely unreal when it dropped. We had Populous 3 as the ultimate god game and this is like GTA 3 was to GTA 2 when compared to populous 3 if that makes any sense Populous 3 is still also amazing and worth buying from gog
@@Babaganuush I honestly just couldnt do the evil campaign. Same in other games. In fallout I tried to blow up megaton city and freaking chickened out at the last minute. I just have this aversion to it.
Oh, I misread your comment! Thought you only went evil 😈 A humanitarian through and through! For most games I’m usually good as well, at least in these types of games. I do remember having the red and evil looking hand once though the first time I played it, don’t know if I set out to be evil though
Fun fact: In Land 4, you can take a proactive role in the defense of your village by *catching* fireballs before they damage your valuable properties - I mean people. Yeah. The valuable people. :P When you toss those fireballs, your Creature can learn how to cast the Fireball Miracle through it. Yeah, it requires you to babysit for a while, but it is a good way to pass time while your Creature impresses other Villages.
The thing I loved about this game is some of it's hidden mechanics. Like bringing dead skeletons to life by putting them through the mirical portals you can Summon. Don't know if this was a bug, but after awhile, I swear those skeletons regained their human form, and never aged.
@@Babaganuush Well, the only other hidden mechanic I recall is getting a random stone to get worshiped. Its funny. I'd usualy pick a favorite rock, drop it in the village. Then the villagers will worship. BETTER still, after awhile, it will become surrounded by a glowing circle, AND given enough time and worship to it, it will eventualy show your icon above it. I like to think of it becoming a holy relic, but it's just a nifty mechanic with no real purpose. Least, one I've yet to find a purpose for.
@@Babaganuush Even works for teddies or beach balls. You pick one of those up, try to teach your creature to learn to catch it, Can't say if that ever worked. But was still fun lugging that around.
ahaaaa damn that's funny. It's also reminiscent of how people actually functioned back in the days when we were all hunter gatherers and we thought stones, rocks and whatever could be spiritual. What a neat detail, gotta see if I can find a clip with that!
I absolutely love this little gem of a game, its a shame its abandonware. It was one of the first games my Dad let me pick out for myself on PC so its awesome to see another playthrough of it!
Oh what a fond memory! Got to see it at a friends house the first time. Didn’t run on our PC but a few weeks after my brother bought a new graphics card and the world was my oyster
I’ve got fond memories of this game - except the creature wrangling, that was a pain in the ass. I’d just ensure they where leashed to the farms and knew the rain spell, then leave them to it while I bowled flaming rocks at the enemy temple from across the map
@@Babaganuush To clarify, I felt it was easier in Black & White 2 - just setting the conditions manually rather than the slap/petting system was so much nicer, because it didn’t feel like I had to constantly watch it from making my pops into popcorn. Granted, that’s just my personal experience, so feel free to disregard it if you want!
Haven't got to experience B&W 2 to any real extent, that does sound easier though! What I thought was clonky was the leashes in B&W 1, didn't feel like the compassion and aggression one was really used, at least not for me. Especially when I noticed that George (my monkey), didn't do any impressions on the villagers without having the learning one on. Did you get to play the expansion for B&W 2? How was that? from what I understand there are no other gods in the base game of B&W 2
@@Babaganuush There is another god, iirc, the BBEG who is undead or something, It’s been a while, and some minor gods that act as enemies. What I liked the most about the change was that you had to purchase it like you do other upgrades. I liked it because the old system was still there, so the new one was fully optional, even if I made a beeline for it myself. Oh hey, I just remembered I remembered a hot key tip in the first game that you can try out if you want, maybe in its expansion “Black & White: Creatures Isle,” if you plan to try it, and in B&W 2 - using the number keys can queue up miracles instantly, no need for finicky drawing! Hope it helps!

Ah, that would have been such a nice feature in the first game, just click on a hotkey to get a miracle ready, feels more accurate and divine as well instead of those clumsy gestures that just brings out frustration! @@Babaganuush I want to know how you actually managed to beat it. When I played it like a decade ago there was a game-breaking bug where after you destroyed the shrinking temple, your creature would stay small, and it sounded like it happened 100% of the time.
I don’t think I managed to beat the last level the first time I played it (which was a long time ago). What you say does ring a bell, I think. But there is a fan patch out there from a few that has taken care of a lot of bugs so this might have been one that’s been taken care of.

Had the files for the game and there are fan-patches out there for getting it to run, I think I've said what to google in another comment here somewhere
There are fan patches out there that help with this, just search for black&white patch and I think you'll find the correct ones, and when you install the game, be sure not to have any spaces in the install location, it can't handle that.

Spent all that summer trying to beat this game
That 4th map was brutal.
Difficulty went up a couple of levels when you hit that map for sure, the fireballs.... god....
The only problem I had with this game was the eventual dependency on the titans. Other than that, I logged a ton of hours into this and B&W2.
Never got to play B&W2, my PC was too weak at the time :( I've since tried it a couple of minutes but that was also long ago.

You can heat up rocks with the fire spell and yeet flaming superheated rocks across the map into enemy villages
A bunch of stuff that I've probably missed. But I also don't want to wreck my upcoming villages which is why I opted for being good (generally...)

There is a new god game that's inspired by black and white that's I'm production so I'm hoping that'll fix my god itch with fate deum
