Korg Minilogue XD Review

  • When Korg introduced the Minilogue in 2016 it was a game-changer. It's a true analog polyphonic synth for around $500, and frankly, there isn't much else like it on the market. And even three years later it's still one of the best values out there in analog synthesizers.
    But the market is moving fast, and Korg isn't about to let the competition lap it. So it's introducing the four-voice Minilogue XD, which takes the best parts of the entire 'logue lineup -- Microtunings and the sequencer from the Monologue, the MULTIdigital Oscillator from the flagship Prologue -- and combines them in one stunningly affordable package.

    A note on the DeepMind 6/12: I bought my 12 at $999, and now it’s $699 U.S.-a steal! The “noisy cooling fans” are easily turned off (I only turn the fan on if I’m in a hot environment). The build quality has been good for me, also. I feel some users’ negative impressions of the DeepMind may stem from the fact that it’s complex, and it may not be a great beginner synth (the presets are not to everyone’s tastes, also). I might instead recommend Bass Station II for beginners, especially with the 2.5 firmware update. Lastly, there is a stigma with products that say “Behringer” which affects some impressions of the DeepMind range-call it a Midas-designed synth, if you prefer. Whatever synth you use-be it freeware, virtual analog, Korg, Moog One, etc.-I support and applaud you!✌️

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Keith Spicknell I tried and couldn’t get along with the Deepmind. It’s very powerful but sounded sterile and clinical to my ears. The Minilogue has a character that far surpasses that of the Deepmind. The Neutron, however, is a completely and total package. One of my all time favorite mono synths.

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      * AnimalHeadSpirit * I think this is a much better value than the Deepmind. With its custom oscillators and effects, the sounds is ever changing. And it sounds MILES better. This is all subjective of course, but I owned a Deepmind for a while and sold it. I could never jive with the sound. It always sounded so clinical and stale. No real character, imo.

    • @chris1a
      @chris1a 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only thing good sounding thing inside the DM is the TC reverb. There are two noisy fans inside that thing for a reason; trash engineering. The synth isn't complex, as there's not much synth there. At least if you want a decent oscillator section. What does give people headaches is the horrible and messy UI, and the equally horrible controls to navigate it. Had two DM12, both gave up on life way too early. I get it, everything sounds good when drenched with effects and a good reverb, but still...there's a reason why B is price dumping:-)

    • @ralphhammond5289
      @ralphhammond5289 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep. The Deepmind 12 is a seriously underrated Synthesizer. I have been incredibly pleased with the build quality & functionality for the price I paid. I have to fight the fan boys on my stance. I have a large selection of Moogs, Arps, Korgs & Rolands. I own a variety of vintage and modern synthesizers. I also repair, rebuild and calibrate vintage synthesizers. So my perspective is not coming from a lack of perspective. It genuinely sounds as good as competing $2500.00 units! The Problem with the Korg is not the function, but with the truly awful keybeds. I just picked up an XD and they did a good job of updating the Minilogue. But that .....Awful....terrible keybed....

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ralphhammond5289 I'm glad you pointed that out about the keybed. Reviewers are usually too scared of offending the manufacturer to mention the glaring faults and shortcomings.
      I bought a Korg MicroKontrol 37, a while ago, and the keybed is truly awful, IMO, so I've no doubt you're right.

    Don’t diss the Behringer Deepmind on build quality and fan. Build quality is superb for the price and the fan can be switched to low or off and it doesn’t overheat unless the room is hot. It’s a beast of a synth and so cheap too considering what else is available.

    My only gripe with the minilogue range is that they should have also added a 6 voice version with 2 Lfos..
    I own the OG Minilogue and 4 voices just isnt enough to do pads and strings with..
    If you have a moderate release setting like you would with pads and strings..as soon as you try and play a new chord the release stops dead and plays the new chord..
    6 is the magic number to have a playable poly..
    Not sure why 4 has became the new 6... All the Roland Boutique stuff I would have liked to try suffers from the same fate.. 4 voice juno 60, 4 voice jx ???

    • @reaktiv1408
      @reaktiv1408 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's purely related to the cost of production, a voice is an extra card to implement . I agree that 6 voices would be ideal, but it would at higher prices

    • @HotStrange
      @HotStrange 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      paddar understand these are true VCOs. 2 more voices would’ve upped the cost from the OGs game changing price point. No one is gonna buy a Minilogue now for $899-$999, so again, 4 voices it is. The effects on the XD will surely help in that regard and the way the new sequencer works, having one LFO won’t be a huge deal. I also really love the way the LFO was implemented on the Minilogue. A stroke of genius, honestly, having it run in tandem with the EG and oscillator pitch.

      @petrokemikal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@HotStrange Don't get me wrong I love my Mini and also the new version is pretty decent.. But be under no illusions that they are able to make these synths darn cheap.. Like how they dropped the price by 100 dollars right at release.. They would't do that at all if the overheads were very high..
      I repair and build Music equipment for a living and my main bread and butter is synths.. The complete circuit board for a minilogue is probably under 100 dollars.. SMD components which are in the minilogue are literally percents of a penny especially if you are a major manufacturer who buys in massive bulks.
      Not surprised if the markup value is 3x or more what it actually costs to manufacture..
      A 6 voice would be a small price for them to pay imo.. It could easily be the highest selling synth in 10 years.. End Rant ;]

    I own a Minilogue PG, Deepmind 12, Subsequent 37 & Bass Station 2. I'd say in terms of actual use in songs/mixing, the Minilogue is the most difficult to mix. Sounds kind of muddy and buried in the mix. Perhaps the new one with FX & new filter will help. It's nice to see they added a knob for Portamento. For anyone wanting a cheap analog keyboard that's pretty immediate, upfront in a mix, has proper keys (and aftertouch!)/pitch/mod wheel check out a Bass Station 2, it's fun to use and very diverse.

      skatechatham I’ve always thought my Minilogue cut through pretty well 🤔 IMO, Moogs are incredible hard to mix. They take up A LOT of space in a mix.

      Great comment, I think many tech heads get caught up in “audition mode” basing synths off the sounds they make by themselves; but not many ask how well they’d fit in a song or mix with other instruments

      I remember a Deepmind review from the Massive Attack guy, he was saying how the DM was sitting well in a mix. Having myself a DM snd I used recently for a band recording, I think he was completely right saying that.

      I always found my Sub37 more difficult to fit in the mix than my Minilogue, but I guess it depends on your preferred style of music and mixing.

      @@daemonelectricity It's tough to be original when Radiohead exists, and in a similar fashion, I always play that song when I first encounter a new keyboard or synth.

    You can get an original minilogue for $400 and a monologue for $240. Would you rather have the new minilogue xd for $650 or the original minilogue and a monologue for $640 and sync them together?
