  • This week on 10 Minute Amiga Retro Cast ‪@10MARC‬ I am reviewing a neat new Serial Port WiFi modem! The "Wodem" - THis little beauty is sold by Alinea computers and works on most Amigas with at least a 68020 CPU - join me as I walk through setup and configuration and then we test it out with some real world applications.

    looks like a great little serial wifi modem solution!

      It's neat for sure. There are several out there that emulate modems, but having one use a real TCPIP stack is quite useful.

    I remember hooking up my Amiga's via my pc Proxy which basically acted as a 115Kbs modem to the serial port. SLIP was a bitca to setup. But hey it was all we had

    • @10MARC

      Oh for sure! Luckily this SLIP does not require much configuring. It was a pain back in the day, though

    I'm using a 3Com PCMCIA card (wired Ethernet) on the A1200 with Roadshow and it's working splendidly. This Wodem certainly seems like it's for someone who wants convenience rather than speed, but I don't want to knock it since it works, and the more connectivity options we have, the better!

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I went back to my Amiga 1200 with my PCMCIA network card and downloaded the same game I did in this video. Maybe 6 or 7 seconds instead of like two minutes.
      It is certainly better than no Internet!

      I use the Wodem daily. Aminet, WHDload Downloads, Games, Demos and some Amiga Forums. It is not fast, 10kb/second but more enough for my needs. The thing is, i don´t need a cable like plibox and don´t have a PCMCIA Card. I need the space (a drawing tablet is on this side on my desk). I also have connected it to my Synology NAS and can load and save my Deluxe Paint graphics and use it on my PC or AmigaOne X1000. It is not the fastest bud i also don´t need more ;) 2MB Game is downloaded fast enough, i also downloaded bigger things like iBrowse, it works for me.

    Doug, Great video and it makes me wonder how it would go with the Multiface 3 Card that is available for big box Amigas and I have one? This has a UART and according to the Amiga Database it is capable of the full 115,200 baud. I also have an 040 card by GVP. Very interesting possibilities, I may have to get me one.
    Thanks Doug, and I am also interested in iBrowse 3. I see it was released on the 19th of November, awesome. A review of Ibrowse on a faster connection with more colours would be great to see. Any chance of that in the not-too-distant future?
    Merry Christmas any way Doug, to you and your Family

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep - it should work fine with a different serial card. The change would be made in installation script with the new serial device name being put there. It should work great at 115,200 in that case. And Merry Christmas to you too!

    Pretty cool device. Not that I would ever try this, but I would assume an A1000 with an 020 accelerator would need a serial m-f convertor, right?

    • @LeftoverBeefcake
      @LeftoverBeefcake 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep, the A1000's serial port is female and the opposite of the rest of the Amiga line, and you'll need a converter.

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but a special one for the Amiga 1000. It requires more than just gender changing due to some other differences. Or maybe that's just the Parallel Port .

    Are there any old-fashioned Amiga BBSes still around?

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Absolutely. There are a ton of BBS's still in service, most available via telnet but some still have phone lines. My favorites are Particles, which is a C64 based BBS but has an active Amiga area. Check out telnetbbsguide(dot)com

    Trying this on a pistorm, caffieneOS 26 - i followed the instructions and got it connected to the amiga 500 tcp stack sucessfully, but once i try telnet i have hit a brick wall. occasionally it will connect but i have no access to the CMD and its not truely connected as it is only transmitting not even 30 bytes of data to the wodem device. So basically i cannot write the Wi-fi connection info to the wodem. Don't believe i have missed or messed up any of steps. any ideas ?

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are using the graphics front end for Telnet? Have you turned on local echo? Maybe your serial settings are misconfigured?
      I have never used Caffeine. Does it use a different serial driver? It only needs to be connected via Telnet one time, do you have a different Amiga to set it up on, or maybe another CF card with a standard version of Amiga OS to set it up with?

      Hmm... Do you have a router or switch you can connect it to? Also, which TCP/IP stack are you using? A lot have issues with DHCP and require a static IP setting.
