Note that the eastern dialect expression "suvinen sää" means specifically a WARM spell of winter weather (above 0 Celsius), not all winter weather. In other words it means the same as Standard Finnish "suojasää". In that way it seems to have a connection to the western dialect "suvi" meaning summer.

In Estonian "suvi" means "summer". There's also a well-known "suvivirsi" (summer hymn) that has been traditionally sung at the end of the school year in May.

The saying comes from The Kalevala. It basicly means that you shouldn't worry about unnessecary things, when you can let someone else do it for you.

Interesting thing about this song is that it was used during WW2 to jam radio controlled explosives placed by Russians when retreating from the town of Viipuri (now Vyborg), therefore saving countless civilian lives.

I think it is more correct to talk about Ceded Karelia (Luovutettu Karjala) that means a part of Karelia that Finland had to cede to the Soviet Union in 1940 and again in 1944, now part of Russia. There are still two Finnish provinces that include the name of Karelia: North Karelia (province centre Joensuu) and South Karelia (province centre Lappeenranta). A Ceded Karelia included Ladoga Karelia and Karelian Isthmus with three Finnish cities, Viipuri, Sortavala and Käkisalmi.Then there's a traditional Russian Karelia that includes Olonets Karelia (Aunuksen Karjala) and White Karelia (Vienan Karjala).

i've know about it for years even since before i had interest in learning finnish.
but i find the song very whimsical, and just has a lot of good enerygy!
When i took interest in learning finnish i found your channel, like a 2 weeks ago lol.
and saw about a week into learning that you did song translations

"Hepo" is probably an ancient loanword for a horse. A "hippodrome" was a Byzantine, Roman, Greek stadium for horse racing.

Thanks for the video, "Säkkijärven polkka" is probably my most favorite Finnish song of all times! Since you have struggled before with Savonian dialect when trying to translate Ievan polkka, have you been thinking of doing a video about characteristical differences between the dialects how people pronounce things like "mä", "mää", "miä", etc ? If you havent already of course...

There is still parts of Karelia inside of Finland and they are called as South and North Karelia and I am myself Finnish Karelian Finn born on the 1980's.
And as there is already mentioned suojasää is warm winter weather.
And I assume you knew already that Suvivirsi means Kesävirsi

Thanks for the video. I think that translating the meaning of songs can often be difficult. I think maybe because the poetic nature of the words and the idea that is being conveyed. I guess you have to be a native to understand it well and even then.

@@KatChatsFinnish By curiosity I googled it and I've found that this word was used in some articles published on the Helsinki newspapers (HS, IS, IL). My level of Finnish is still too low to understand articles, but I think this "mieron tie or mieron tiellä" could be a fixed expression of the literary language. Maybe an idea for some future videos. ☺😜

Mierontie means homeless people and beggers. 'Hepo surkoon ' means: let the horses worry , because horses have bigger heads. (Niillä on ihmeesti suurempi pää)
There's a saying in Finnish, "let the horse do the grieving, it has a bigger head", so I guess it means that as a horse has a bigger head, it can do a bigger duty on the sorrow front, it is a bit humorous saying. But it is a way of shrugging off sad thoughts. "Ihmeesti" could also mean, not only surprisingly, but also just "a lot", like "miraculously" (which I would say is the most fitting translation).
On the word "suvi" - what you cited from Kotus says "talvinen SUOJAsää", and "suojasää" means weather with temperature above zero Celcius (so usually late in the winter when the snow starts to melt etc.).

Karelia is a much larger region that what is shown on the very strange map you picked. It can refer to a historical province of Finland or a region of Karelia as a whole. East Karelia, for example, was never a part of Finland.
Finland still has North Karelia and a part of South Karelia.
Joensuu and Lappeenranta are inside Karelia and parts of Finland.
Oh I was talking about Säkkijärvi specifically not Karelia as a whole 🙈
How many major dialects does Finnish have? I found it is interesting even a native speaker has trouble understanding the eastern dialect. Is it rare for you to hear those dialects via TV, radio and so on?

I think the trouble I also have is the song is old so some phrases aren't in common use anymore. And people don't speak like a song in everyday life xD But it's true I definitely don't hear regional accents in everyday media much, in Helsinki at least.

I think at least four main dialects: häme, lappi, hesa and savo. I live in Mikkeli, so I speak savo-dialect.
The dialects in Karelia go under quite remarkable changes in every village and region, I've always found it wrong to bunch them together based on a few similar characteristics. The variability and words only used in Karelia might make it difficult for others to understand, but believe me when I say that it can be very difficult to understand what people from Turku, or even worse from Rauma, are trying to say. You can hear the dialects in a regional radio or TV station, be aware the hosts almost always speak written Finnish.

What is then a mouth harp called (jew's harp) in finnish?
I had to check that up from the dictionary. :D It's called munniharppu in finnish. I had heard it before but it's not a common instrument around Finland. Apparently munni is in some finnish dialect a mouth. Never heard it used in a sentence though. So in a way it is also a mouth harp in finnish. :D
