When Lewis and Clark set up camp in the leaky and cold Fort Clatsop, they found themselves in the heart of an Indigenous community. Their guides and hunters knew exactly what to do: begin personal relationships with local people. This lecture will examine the Native groups who came to call through the lens of developing intercultural relationships. Just like fur traders and other explorers who wintered in such places, the Corps of Discovery needed personal and intimate relationships to survive their long, cold winter.
This presentation is the fourth in a series of lectures in the Jefferson’s West: Lewis, Clark, and Native Americans program during June 2021.
