Right before his arrest, Whelan was found with $80,000 cash and the reason he went to Russia in the first place was to attend a wedding of a former friend. After having a long meeting with a Russian citizen on a solo day by himself, he was given a USB drive containing a list of all employees at a classified security agency. According to sources, the wedding party he was with was shocked to find out that he would spent a day alone, seeing that everyone was so close. And let it be known, Whelan was a director of Security and Investigations at a manufacturer here in the US. However, he couldn’t have been a spy for the US specifically because of his shitty military record which wouldn’t allow him to hold a clearance.
