      Actually, reviewers touch PNY's cards fairly often; they make the Founders edition cards and the workstation cards from nvidia

      @@JensTX I'll grant you that PNY made the 1000-series Founder's Editions. But not the latest ones according to igor'sLAB, who stated that Foxconn and BYD were contracted to manufacture the 3000-series FE cards.
      Let me clarify that the TH-cam hardware reviewers I have watched for the past few years (Gamers Nexus, Paul's Hardware, Linus Tech Tips, der8auer, JayzTwoCents) have not published a review on a card branded as PNY that I remember seeing.

      PNY is the Nvidia OEM for their professional GPU lineup (former QUADRO).
      I had PNY cards before - like a GTX 780 I have unboxed in my channel -, and they were fine. As many other brands, their cooling solutions go from the "it sucks balls" blowers like the one featured (MSI has their AERO, ASUS and GIGABYTE have their TURBOs) and the "good enough" average to the good ones.

    PNY is one of them companies they make really cheap stuff and really good stuff, I've had PNY quadro's OEM of course, so they were built well, I've had a GTX 780 from PNY, pretty decent cooler on it, I've had bottom of the barrel PNY 760 that was probably worse than that.

    that cooler is the reference cooler it was used on cards at least as far back as the 580 maybe even farther back then that. i have an evga 580 with basically the extract same cooler. nothing really wrong with it did the job its louder then some of the beast 3rd party coolers that high tier cards use but it did the job or cards wouldn't have came with it for so many generations. i think there was even a few 20 and 30 series cards that still used that cooler although blower style cards have mostly died off in the last couple generations.

    • @Dandan-tg6tj
      @Dandan-tg6tj ปีที่แล้ว

      I can confirm that many GTX 570 and 580 had the exact same cooling system so it is really old. The design is fine but it needs only a bit of modifying to work a lot better.

  • @AtariBorn
    @AtariBorn ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I recognize that back plate you say serves no purpose. I think it was an EVGA 1060 6GB blower model. Most of the heat sink was contacting the plate, which had thermal pads underneath, cooling the VRAM. I don't know how efficient that method was but I think it was the reasoning for the large heat sink with such minimal die contact.

    I bought an MSI Aero variant in April for my collection and some tinkering. The blower solution was evicted from the card in the same evening I got it after a few stress tests - yep, its a jet engine in your living room. In went an Arctic Accelero III and individual Alu heatsinks for RAM and power delivery. Card is almost inaudible at 48 - 52 C. I have shitty heating so it mines RVN during the night in my bedroom. 200w heater that partially pays for itself. Great card.

      PNY is Nvidia's OEM for their professional GPUs (former QUADRO line) and they are in the industry for a very long time. That's a "pedigree", as far as I am concerned. Sure, PNY doesn't have the "very-good-God-tier" coolers like the big three have (MSI, ASUS. GIGABYTE) but, that hardly makes PNY a bad manufacturer with a bad pedigree.

      @johnny_rook ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Sergmanny46I got a decent product?! What about everybody else that got a decent PNY product? Use your brain for a moment instead of entering the hate train & bandwagon for sheep: PNY was the OEM for Nvidia QUADRO lineup of GPUs, the ones for servers and workstations, for more than a decade. They sell to "big tech" corporations by the millions, which made Nvidia billions of dollars. Do you really think PNY would keep that status for so long if their GPUs -- that ran in the most horrific working conditions and hot environment btw --, "died after year and a half of use due to shit cooling"? C'mon man, seriously?

    Had an ASUS 1080 ti back in the day. It heated at 80 plus Celsius no matter what I did. The exact same design. There is an airflow cooling that metal plate that's seated on all memory chips so I guess that is just fine but the part that's cooling the GPU is not OK. On top of everything they put a million ports right where the air it is supposed to get out which means that half of the path is already closed. That's an old design and nobody thought to cut the number of ports down to be able to leave more space for the airflow to flow more freely. Design engineering probably takes more braincells than some design engineers possess.

    I am not a fan of PNY. To me they are like a generic brand. If I'm going to spend a lot of money on a GPU it would previously have been EVGA. Now I would either buy Gigabyte or MSI.

    It's crazy the way some of these cards come with thermal pads that are the wrong thickness. Almost as if the people assembling the cards at the factory do not know any better. That can't be right, can it? Ahem. /s

      Googling 1080ti's reference cooler, Nvidia still used the same style as pny, the front plate for vrm + vram cooling, while the cooper block is for the gpu die.
