The Journey of Ed Coan - The Greatest Powerlifter of All Time

  • Ed Coan, the greatest powerlifter of all time, talks Mark Bell and Silent Mike through his past. Ed lets them in on everything from the very beginning of his lifting career as boy to the man he is today. Ed's numbers may have been superhuman, but in this interview we get to see that he is indeed human--and an exceptional one, at that.

Favourite part is 37:40. "The best thing I got out of powerlifting was- I don't give a flying F about the awards...but the journey and the people I met. The people I can call friends. If when I die, I can have a handful of friends I can count on, I'm the luckiest man alive"

Ed is the ultimate powerlifter. The word legend is over used these days. Ed Coan a living legend. I'm wondering if Ed remembers a guy named Jim Cash. He held the dead lift record in the 220's i'm remembering in the early 80's. I trained in the gym he trained back then in Kansas when I was in the military. It was owned by another great powerlifter Nate Foster. Thanks for the great video!!

Cants seem to reply to your question but this is so inspiring for me. When I grew up in the 80s in Australia, Ed was a guy in a picture in muscle & fitness who Fred Garfield would rave about, so to hear him speak, to realize he's such an affable, decent guy who loves the iron as much as you do (even though he's more gifted than 99.9% of humans) and that getting big and strong for its own sake, and achieving his goals was all he cared about...that deep, zen like love for the game that never leaves you...is what I loved about it. I cried when he cried. It was awesome to see.

As a 16-year old, a body building neighbor/friend of mine began bringing me with him to Quad's Gym to lift. I can remember him pointing out several of the big-time lifters in the gym to me, and being introduced to the pound-per-pound world's strongest man. What amazed me the most was how nice Ed was, even taking time to give me a couple pointers on squats.

I really got the sense that there was genuine camaraderie by these gentlemen - all men who I seriously look up to, watch, read, and emulate. Wait a minute, right off the bat at SIXTEEN years old and 150 lb bodyweight he did a 485 Sqt, 295 Bench, and a 495 DL?
Thats some crazy shit. I guess genetics do matter after all.

"I think you're better off not knowing any better" Never have truer words been spoken. I was similar when I started out. Naturally strong etc etc... then along came form police, and all the experts and it got into my head that I was squatting to deep, my bench grip was too close, and I should deadlift sumo... It sort of ruined me, but I stuck with it and did pretty good. But that is the crux.. people will ruin your chances if they can.

Talked to Ed on the phone a long time ago, really nice guy. I had the pleasure of starting my powerlifting at Chaillet's Gym in MD. He must have had 6 guys squatting over 800 there, then Mark with over 900. But this was way back in the 80's Now I'm all busted up. Arthritis sucks but he is right about moving around and not sitting still. Great video.
