"the odds of a dog randomly attacking you are actually really low"
I've tried walking to my job that's a 15 minute walk that passes two elementary schools in the suburbs and I've been charged at and bitten by dogs many times over the two years I've worked there. Now I walk with a stick, pepper spraying and if things get desperate, a gun.
Animal control didn't do anything and these dog owners are leaving them out all the times, better to take things into my own hands if nothing is gonna come from reporting loose aggressive dogs.

you have to run towards the dog as if it was the prey. believe me, Im from Mexico and since I was a little child, Ive encountered an endless number of dogs aggressive and unleashed on the streets and on parks. The most dangerous dogs are the ones that are leashed by their owners or their owners are present because they feel at the top of the world and you dont want to hit them in front of their owners when they snap off and run towards you. It happens ALL THE TIME, dog owners are ones of the most POS people Ive ever met.

Not a hair of it went on me but I was about to pass out due to shortness of breath. If I want to keep myself safe, I would keep myself away from any dog and any dog owner. @jacob floresI’d rather live a safe life without weaponry to not cause injuries or possibly death to such animals, even if untamed. Plus, even though a dog or any animal would attack, I would never lay my hands on any gun. Life of an animal is precious (not more than a human though, but it still doesn’t make any difference). Having a ‘gun’ would just cause other people to think that a threat is right there. Get this whole ‘gun’ thing out since even the use of it would be a cause of animal abuse (even if it was just for defensive reason/s).

@Aaliyah That's not true. I got severely bitten by 2 dogs last year, here in Texas, and spent my whole summer in agony while my wounds were healing. The police were able to finally separate the dogs from me, otherwise I would have died. And guess what, they only tested the dogs to see if they had rabies and as they did not have rabies, the dogs were taken back to their owner! They did not euthanized them, even though those dogs are very dangerous. And another thing, there is this law here in Texas that says that if it's the first time a dog bites someone, well, you cannot sue the owner. The first bite is free!!! So, I could not sue the owner, I spent 3 months in agony, without being able to walk, with bleeding wounds and those dogs are still in my effing street!

For example this guy here says not to remain still, but the majority of sources elsewhere tell you not to run away. The only thing about which there is consensus is to avoid making eye contact.

Yeah, a lot of the stuff I can find is saying to stand still sideways from them and not make a move, as they'll see it as you trying to attack back.
Granted, maybe this is referring more to stray/wild dogs and not pets, as wild dogs likely will attack without warning while pets will warn you 1st, but idk.
I do know I've been approached by neighbors' dogs, and each time, I've stopped and stood there and nothings happened. Or maybe I'm lucky 😅, but each time the dog just stops barking and runs back home or the owner calls them back. I can never outrun them so I don't try to.

Today I was walking my dog past the house of a rottweiler owner who doesn't keep the dog on a leash. The dog came out towards us, so I diverted my course not to walk in front of their house and kept walking away, thinking looking confident and walking away would be the best move, but the dog came up and bit my poodle on the back leg anyway. I screamed loudly twice and the dog ran away. But I was very rattled by the experience. Luckily my dog is okay, the skin was not punctured. I heard a dog whistle as the Rottweiler was coming out of the property, so I hope the owner heard my screams and realized that they really need to keep their dog on a leash, at the very least. I am now afraid to walk past that house again. It's a shame as there are only two directions for me to walk my dog and that's one of them. I have no clue why someone would want a dog like that, who would hurt someone else's dog.

I stood there contemplating what to do as the pitbull didn't seem very friendly. A moment later they both charged directly at me and I didn't move a muscle and just stared at the dogs they stopped about a foot in front of me looked at me and just ran off. Dogs can sense emotions and most of them just want someone to feel comfortable with them aggressive, anxious, or hyper whatever the case may be but I'm not saying this is always the right choice to make either haha

I think 9 times out of 10, an "aggressive" dog is simply sending a warning -- running up to you, barking etc., but never actually biting (had many dogs do this to me, but never been bit). If you run in this case, you will make things worse as their instinct is to chase and possibly knock you down once they reach you (happened to my younger brother, but still he never got bit).
My advice would be to simply keep walking.

A few dogs are trained for attacking but most aren't. # 1 don't show fear or make a quick move. Keep on talking in a normal tone , to an invisible person while continue walking away to something of safety, this bewilders the dog move toward something high in case you need to move up away . Never has any dog bitten me or been aggressive with violence, with a bark yes as a warning. And I've had many encounters with dangerous dogs , but they all standed down. Instinct , a gift one learns by associating with them since two. Of course there are the exceptions , you can sense when a animal is near crazy and be quick and strong .

Stay calm and "in control". If they sense fear, that can escalate. Once they begin to get in attack mode, its hard to calm them down. Usually they will "check you out" and move on... if you stay calm.

Dog do attack. The statement of TV guy that chances are less is not true and misguided. Unleashed dogs are more aggressive than stray dogs. Especially person of short stature, kids alone and older people should be more careful. Unless trained, dogs can definitely be aggressive.

I managed to get to my front door and tried to get in without it but it barged in the house. It went in to the kitchen and ran riot scratching everything. I didnt know if to keep it in to find owner but it was manic and my dd was there and we disnt know dog and disnt want her bitten plus we have two cats it could of attacked ao i felt i had to get it out. I tried to phone council but no answer. I feel sad i now have no trust in dogs. Sad for the dog whose owners must of let it down. It didnt know commands so would not sit etc. My legs tonight as i am on blood thinners are purple with bruises and i feel violated and scared because it almost over took me. Just saying. 1) Stand still, as tall as you can, with your hands open, and out to prove you are not a threat.
    2) If the owner is there, tell the owner to call the dog off!
    3) Make Eye Contact with the dog to make yourself look Dominant.
    4) When it backs down, how ever long that takes, point away from you, and tell the dog to back off.
    5) When it does, don't run, but walk away, Most important DO NOT LOOK BACK!
    6) Finally, and most important, call others who might not know those techniques, to tell them to stay away from that Neighbourhood, if the dog is in a yard.
Yes, I was in that same situation 6 weeks ago. Once I got home, I called my Brother, who has two small children and a new Puppy, and told them where to avoid. Regardless of breed, it might be aggressive.
