    - Sometimes it's _extremely_ hard to gauge a dogs demeanor when they display cropped ears _and_ a docked tail. The Bouvier des Flandres at the start of the video would have had me second guessing, and I speak as a Rottweiler owner that has a dog with a docked tail. You stated that a dog with a fast wagging tail should be approached with caution. Well, that is fine with a dog with a _full_ tail, but again, a dog with a docked tail (as in My Rottie and your Bouvier), the short stump seems to wag and wiggle at an increased rate - so what would be a normal, slow, graceful wag with a full tail, once docked, turns into a fast wag - and thus appearing (by what you've said) to be a warning sign (to the untrained eye). I don't see how you can use a dog with cropped ears that never move to give an indication of forward/backwards, or the fact that it has it's tail docked, as a dog to use as an example. If a dog like this is coming towards you in a park, of leash, then even I would be very cautious.

    • @kariboo5201
      @kariboo5201 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awww I used to own a bouvier. They are sooo cute! That particular bouvier looked eager to me. I noticed the tail wagged to the left and excited energy which would have been my indicator that they were friendly. I read somewhere that a tail wag to the left usually equals friendliness. A slow tail wag to the right usually means they may have negative feelings associated with you, but they are not going to challenge you. When they are wagging it very rapidly to the right, it is a sign of aggression. If you aren't sure, then I would probably just leave the dog alone altogether.

    HI, can you do a video or give advice about how to approach a group of stray dogs in order to feed them. there's this group of 7 or 8 dogs roaming around my school and with the quarantine current situation, there's no one there to feed them.
    I drove by the other day and their behavior has changed; when I almost stopped the car most of them came barking towards me.
    I would like to go there to feed them but I don't know how to approach them all at once

    The dog owner does NOT know their dog better than a reasonably alert and skilled dog handler. Most dog owners cannot even control a dog on leash. Pay attention to that. You do NOT need to pet a dog and it is NOT your dog. Simply leave the dog alone and do not stare at it. That is the kindest thing for the dog; stop thinking about what YOU want. The dog is not yours, so leave it alone.

    • @DougHinVA
      @DougHinVA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      sacr3.... everything in the world 'depends'. professional rehabbers of biting dogs tell us the same thing: leave another person's dog alone. MOST people walking a dog do not know how since a very small % of owners ever take the dog all the way through even one obedience class. 'what if' games have no value to the real world... leave a stranger's dog alone and no harm will be done. it's not our dog and we do not need to handle it. it belongs to the stranger.

    • @diemeng1200
      @diemeng1200 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That wasn't the point though, the point was that the viewer, as a stranger, not a professional dog handler, does not know the dog better than the owner, so your comment is pointless.

    • @mmmmmlemons
      @mmmmmlemons 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What a strange reactionary comment. I work with dogs and find a lot of them love to meet people when out walking. It can be a lovely encounter for the dog and the people involved.

    • @KC_Lake
      @KC_Lake 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A dog who never gets to engage with strangers is not going to be well socialised, the same as if they never got to meet new dogs.
      If you know what to look for when greeting a new dog there shouldn't be an issue. A dog who isn't used to meeting new people could end up having issues around strangers, such as people visiting their home. So no - greeting new dogs isn't a bad thing at all.

  • @jkasaunder228
    @jkasaunder228 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    All of the dogs were very much approachable, but at different paces. Dog number 1 was easy mode, I would say dog number 2 would have calmed down almost straight away after a bit of time. Dog number 3 seems like she has lost trust with people in the past and likely will be the more difficult dog to approach. Reminds me of my past Belgian shepherd, We got as a rescue, we know she was beaten by a guy who wore a hat before we got her. She hated anyone who wore a hat.

      I have an adopted cat who hates shoes. Like if your wearing shoes he will run away and if he sees you putting them on he watches you intently. We know he was abused in some way as he had to have his leg remove due to a gunshot wound but this thing with shoes makes me wonder.

    When my daughter came over to my house to stay for a few days, we asked her to walk the dog on a leash and everything seemed ok. Then, one day when my daughter and I were sitting on the couch talking, the dog came into the room, sniffed me and then walked over to my daughter sniffed her and attacked her. I noticed the same behavior when my husband, my uncle, and my nephew were standing and talking in our house. The dog came over sniffed my husband, then sniffed my uncle whom the dog knew already, and then sniffed my nephew and attacked my nephew. What do you think caused this behavior and how can we prevent it so that my daughter and nephew can come over and visit?

    • @warondogs8199
      @warondogs8199 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This behavior was caused by the fact that dogs are bullies: they attack the smallest, weakest and most vulnerable person in the room, for the same reason human bullies attack the weak, because they know they have a better chance of winning. What you can do to prevent this behavior is to get rid of the dog. Your daughter and nephew will be very happy that you have prioritized their safety over your desire to "own" a predatorial family member. Get rid of it and care about your child and nephew, like a mother should.

    While walking my dog, a man wanted to approach my dog and he held out his hand. My dog did not come to him. We saw the man on and off for several weeks during our walks and the man did the same thing.However, today when the man held out his hand , the dog did not respond, the man started to walk away, the dog snapped at the man's pant leg? Is this because the dog thought the man was in the dog's personal space? Is this because the movement of the man so close to to the dog threatened the dog? Why do you think this happened? What can we do so that man can pet the dog?

    • @sarahinsf
      @sarahinsf ปีที่แล้ว

      @Elva Fong -- I am not a dog trainer, but I see you also posted a comment on this video that your dog has attacked your daughter and nephew. With that record, it seems strange that you would want to encourage strangers to pet your dog! Your family and neighbors would be better served by you and your dog undergoing training to curb their aggression.

    Although Riley wanted to meet the “stranger”, he did DEFINITELY not wish to be embraced (watch the video again!)

    You're a potential threat, and you've just entered their space, it's on you to identify yourself and show that you're not a threat. 9 dogs out of 10 can be charmed within a matter of minutes, it's that 10th dog you need to know when you're not getting anywhere with it and just abort.
