great ex, i worked with some singaporians in 2017 in shoalwater bay. i was really surprised how clean they keep their parts of SWBTA. they use brass catchers on their rifles which is unheard of from an aussie perspective! super respectful and keen guys
i think the first guy had get it wrong,, Guards are not inserting as a spearhead forces, they are build up forces to gain ground by utilising all means after the spear head forces ie. the Commandos or NDU had secured the landing point. thereafter they are just function just as any infantry unit with higher mobilities n strike capability.
Yes, Singapore is mostly a Conscript Armed Forces so lack of combat experience is understandable. :-) We compensate what we lack of by heavy use of Technology my friend. :->
Guardsmen are too used to jungle warfare. Can they fight well in semi urban area with HDB flat, town centres and small forest areas? can helicopters target enemy hidden inside small forested area? Singapore is highly urbanised area, our armed force should learn to fight on these areas. If enemies come at night and secure the east coast, and move armoured vehicles across Pan Island Expressway, how would SAF deal with these?
Alvin Fua the reason why they train in jungle terrain or anything apart from urban area is because if there were to be an invasion/war. Obviously the enemy will come charging from Malaysia. Guess what? Malaysia has a lot of jungles. That's why our army uses the blitzkrieg tactic which make use a lot of tanks/vehicles since we have a small population. So if the enemy were to charge even from Thailand etc. Our army will need to reinforce Malaysia defence to prevent them from invading Singapore. Remember how the Japanese manage to invade us? It's because the British didnt prepare for the fight. And they waited for the Japanese to come. Anw, i'm not any expert in the army etc. But definitely our army is capable, reliable and well-trained.
The whole point of army is to prevent enemies from stepping foot into Singapore. The whole point is to keep the battles "outside" of Singapore. Inside Singapore also not only army fighting, got SCDF, SPF, shoot water, bullets, or you want can call SMRT Jookoon train to come knock them down lo.
There are battalions trained for island defence. Specialist vocations like the GDS are not meant for island defence but for preemptive outbound operations. As a matter of training, the GDS are trained in both urban and conventional, but there will be battalions trained for purely urban terrain
I am from armoured infantry and we also have FIBUA training. Already MR 12 years ago and if we had done this in those years so no worry of urban warfare training for our elite forces.
1. Guardsmen are trained for urban combat. 2. Singapore adopt a pre-emptive defence strategy (our potential enemies knows about it) similar to Israel simply because we have no hither-land. 3. Whenever intelligence and political atmosphere deems an attack is impeding, our forces (including Guards) would had already been prepared and reservist activated. 4. This is when Commandos and NDU are already inserted within enemy territories and Guardsmen ready to strike at the enemy on the first gunshot or declaration of war. In order to be mobile and strike at the enemy, effectively disorient them, they have to be trained in various insertion methods and terrains, largely those not found in Singapore. 5. Their attack will be followed up with our conventional units. 6. So in your scenario the sizeable invaders will have to first evade intelligence. 7. This is why even during peacetime we are maintaining a sizeable Quick Reaction Force units from PDFs to ADFs depending on the evaluated threat. 8. Such QRF are designed to contain and suppress the unnoticed aggressors (primary objective), eliminating them if possible (secondary objective) 9. During the operation other units with heavier tools will be called upon to decisively eliminate the threat. The latter may or may not include Guards. 10. They will most likely come into the picture at point 3 after the aggressor have been identified.
During our Reservist ATEC, we have active Guardsmens supporting us. I have a fellow platoon sergeant supporting the mission who is an Indian guy. Really appreciate his work and support.

True but when I see them doing coastal hook, I lose confidence. Even my grandmother can do better.
