THIS is why LEGO Technic B-Models Must Return!

  • LEGO Technic B models have been around ever since the thee first began in 1977. None of the large modern technic sets contain B models. I have identified two main reasons for why LEGO Technic B models should return.

    They should definitely return!! My favourite b model was the 8043 excavator because you could buy 2 and have two completely different fully working models and they both looked complete

    • @TheGrejp
      @TheGrejp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! I have the 8043 (just one, unfortunately) and its B model is definitely my favorite B model of any Technic set I own. It's really well designed, so complete it could almost be a separate set.

    4:19 I had the picture of that set in a promotional booklet in my first technic set that I got for Christmas in ~1993. Since our family was quite poor we could never afford it so I just drooled over the picture.

    They should be standard in every set. I understand why Control+ sets will have only one, but they can give a coupon for rebrickable instead.

    The thing is that Lego leaves it to MOC designers to promote the set with alt models. If for example it is possible to build a truck from a dozer set, many people will figure out different ways to do it and promote it separately.

    • @Unbrickme
      @Unbrickme  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Perhaps, but most kids are likely unaware of the MOC community

    • @SaperPl1
      @SaperPl1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Unbrickme yes, but note that it's also cheaper for them to not invest in additional design to make two models with same bricks. It costs money for the team to work on additional model when they get alt models for free. Also making an alt model they limit what they could release in the following year.

    Of course these should return. It's baffling they disappeared in first place, product just lost it's appeal big time for many, especially first time buyers. I would even go further, and think of adding suggestions of what can you build by connecting two sets together, even of the same model. Imagine 6x6 crawler truck, that one set can be turned into 4x4 offroader, and a motorbike. Or 4x4 and a trailer. Add second set, and you can build a racing team of truck, car and a motorbike. Or two 4x4's trailer and motorbike. Or 8x8 flatbed truck and 4x4 that can be carried on it. Or 8x8 truck and two motorbikes. That would be amazing thing.

    Knowing Lego it would come down to cost cutting; designing the main model already costed a lot of time and money, the same goes for the B models, Lego thinks if the main model is complex enough, few would want to tear it down to build other ones, so there is no reason to spend resources on designing the alternative model(s). Also is quite clear today's Lego do not like their flagship/upper tier sets to be reused/repurposed, they want them to be 'collectible' sets so the consumers will keeping buying new sets over and over again. Back in the days (the 80's) Technic releases were few and far in-between, and at times only a single new set was released in a year, because Lego wanted to give the consumers the time to properly enjoy the sets.

    • @minnion2871
      @minnion2871 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the foolish part of it though.... If they don't want to tear down the A model to build the B model they might just buy a second set....

    • @CatOnTheCouch
      @CatOnTheCouch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@minnion2871 That's the train of thought behind not including a B model; most B models do not use up all the parts, and as good as they are they often have less functionalities (exceptions do apply but that is the general rule of thumb) than the main model, unless one is a hardcore collector few would buy an extra set just for the B model.
      Model approval at Lego is a lengthy process, for complex Technic sets they do not want the main model to be affected/delayed just because the B model is not good enough(rejection means starting over from scrath), so they might as well use the resource to design a brand new set. B model(s) add value for the consumer, but not so much for Lego, for them profit is everything so anything not adding enough value for them will be scrapped(I don't see their profit dropping just becasue there are no more B models for flagship Technic sets, so they might as well keep it that way).

    I guess for having more sets in the august wave, I see this as LEGO spreading it out more - we have two in august, two in October, so a total of 4 in the 2H wave. Back when we had more sets in august, we had very little sets released in other months in the second half of the year.

    I am new to the technic theme (a year), but I have looked at sets that have retired and thought the B models were a great idea!!
    Not sure how this holds up, but I can get why a licensed product may not have an alternate model, unless it is an alternate licensed vehicle.
    The Land Rover Defender, for example, makes sense because Land Rover has some rights to it and I don’t picture lego making a Ford truck out of those pieces or something like as the alternate.

    B-models for the win. But I would also like a Technic series of vehicles that "fits" together, like what Tamiya is doing with the 1:14 trucks, here you can by a trailer that fits it. I am thinking 1:17 then it fits the white Mercedes truck (42043) and similar truck. Lets get a series with new trucks (4x2, 6x4, 8x4 etc), misc trailers and different construction machines (tracked excavators, wheel loader, etc). Finally they should bring back the Technic figure, this should be sligthly larger to truly fit the 1:17 scale. This is my dream, but for now I am just making MOC's to get it reallized.

  • @bami2

    What I really liked were the Idea Books, which contained very brief instructions on what you could consider "C" models. Just some steps that taught interesting techniques and give ideas on what to build yourself. Now with B models disappearing, it's easy to see that the B models did exactly that for regular sets.
    Then again, these days you can download the building instructions for any set without much hassle and just build it yourself with the pieces you already have.
    If not B-models, at least give us instructions on how to motorize/add pneumatics or other play features to existing sets.

  • @GamerErman2001
    @GamerErman2001 ปีที่แล้ว

    B-models are awesome. I would love to see all LEGO themes have at least a decent amount of them. Heck maybe even a "C" model if they can come up with a good one! My favorite thing in any LEGO set is building them so seeing a lot of free instructions for alternate versions on Rebrickable really makes the set feel more valuable whether it's a Technic set or not!

  • @CarsSimplified
    @CarsSimplified 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regardless of the theme, B-models make a purchase decision more compelling (at least, in person and anywhere the B-model photo is made available) so it seems like a good business decision.

    After not picking up a Technic set since I was a kid I was really disappointed to see that a lot of the technic sets no longer have a b set. I can only guess now that it would cost more in labour for research and development, plus of course I don’t feel as though Technic is as versatile as it used to be, with set-specific Lego pieces etc.

    Technics is now hugely over priced, even more so without the B model.
    I suspect that part of the problem is all the custom pieces that are now made to achieve the more realistic A model makes it harder to create a B.
    God for bid that you might need a little imagination rather than having a realistic look!
    I also wonder why for instance the engine block of modern kits has dropped in technical quality from a proper crank, big and little ends and piston to bits of axle bouncing up and down cams?
    An idea, the B model could be released 3-6 months later as a download design only?

    For 2022 it's becoming more common to have sets cost OVER .10 per piece plus no B model. Yes bring back B models! Then again, sometimes the Rebrickable B models are better than Lego A or B models. Lego should do "Rebrickable quality" alternative builds with paper instructions, no more "go online to build the B model" from Lego. If Cada can make mocs into sets why can't Lego?

    I disagree while not all ways free the 42100 for arguments sake has at least 8 alternatives that I no off and if u add up the costs to buy all the plan's for them works out less than the rrp so no I don't it should be a given that we get b models we have the parts available so it's up to us to come up with are own ideas thats not to say that I don't think is nice to get a b model as I do miss haveing the b models to biuld but and I think lego see it from my perspective that moc biulds are so common and of thend to be as good it not better than the a models lol so it would be grate if the flag ship models have b biulds and some of the smaller one maybe as well but it dont always need to be the case and it wasn't that long ago 42055 and 42082 I think it that have b models came only 5 or so years to me that not that long considered lego technic has been going for 40 years
