The support on the video is appreciated. Especially after being gone for 10 months. Its my best performing video since October 2022, so thank you very much for that. I appreciate the discussion in the comments and I've enjoyed responding to them. Next video will be out soon!
People should give tank controls a chance. I recently played through RE1 Remake with “classic controls” (tank controls). It was weird for the first five minutes, but after 30 minutes I was comfortable with them. By the time I got to the final lab section, I was convinced tank controls were superior for fixed camera games. Tank controls are fun!
After just finishing RE2 for the first time, honestly, Tank controls aren't that bad. If anything, the people who complain about them are probably from the fortnite generation. Are the fixed camera angles and controls for everybody? No, and that's fine.
Honestly, I'm finding it to be increasingly rare to actually find anybody who does hate tank controls. Every Resident Evil video I've always seen starts out by mentioning how they like tank controls and how they better fit the game, and every person I've talked to who enjoys the games agree. It's not a hot take to say Resident Evil is better with tank controls - at this point, most people agree. People who disagree are likely people who haven't played the game for more than five minutes.
I agree with game preservation being something that game companies should not ignore and delisting the original in favour of a remake/remaster is frustrating. It's because of that that I've never played the original 3 RE so far. Thankfully, in the case of these 3 games, it turns out that GOG are porting them to their store and the first two are already available. I'm waiting until the third one is released to play them back-to-back.
Honestly, the moment GOG put that bundle on their store page during the 2024 Summer Sale, I immediately bagged it. 2 & 3 were the games that made me a horror fan.
The algorithm has blessed me with another wonderful retrospective! I was 6 when the original came out and have been hooked ever since. I've learned to appreciate the action titles, other than umbrella corps 😅 and I've never played ORC. But, this is about appreciation for the true survival horror! Thanks for your hard work, this was nice to wake up to. May the algorithm bless this video as it blessed me
Not only is Resident Evil '96 responsible for the rest of the series existing, but it's basically responsible for the zombie subgenre being popular in the way it is today at all, including television and film. Not to mention the survival horror genre. This was a great deep dive, I loved every second of it! I hope you can do a similar video for the second and even third game some time!
There’s so much range in game style with RE. I think RER is the best classic style, RE4R best action, and RE7 best modern survival horror. They’re all S tier games in their own lane
What’s unbelievable is that Konami are actually honouring the MGS series so well with the Master Collection. Yes it has issues but it’s still the original three games on modern systems
That's the funny part isn't it. We all were trashing Konami years ago but despite that, at least Metal Gear is getting a better treatment considering that series is what put them on the map.
I remember the original spiders much different. I rarely killed any spiders since they were avoidable quite easily. Hunters were quite a different story, i kept magnum ammo exclusively for them. Exactly for the reason you name: you never know when they just behead you in one jump. I remember a run without saves which was ended quite far into the game just because one of them made the move pretty much the moment i got into a room. I never found the strategy to easily kill jawn, so it was always kind of a gamble other than that i remember everything else pretty much predictable and / or avoidable.
Great Video, shout out from Venezuela. Sadly i had to experience the first decade of resident evil games through piracy or emulation. Nowadays I still do but I was able to buy a lot of games over the past 20 years without the need of emulation or piracy and you know what, you are right, some times I am just to lazy and if I see a collection of games on the PSN o steam store and I have the cash I bought the games there instead, plus I like Archivement hunting. Anyway is a Shame GOG had to be the one to preserve the games instead of Capcom Also, don t get me started on that Travesty of game capcom decided to name "Resident evil 3 Remake" is so mediocre and insulting. My FAV RE games are RE 1 remake, RE 3 1999 Nemesis and RE 2 Remake.....RE 4 and RE 4 remake are pretty close to 4th place it depends on what mood I am
Really enjoyed your review, really thorough. Will add though that it has been re released on the PS5. At least the directors cut version. I played though it with Jill only a couple of weeks ago. The remake and the original RE2 are my two favourite in the franchise. The remake to 2 and 3 were far better than I was expecting (but honestly had low expectations), but still don’t touch there predecessors. Even though 3 was more like a dlc then a full game, way to short but I did still enjoy it. As far OG RE2 and RE3 can only play them on ps3, unless you’ve got them on disc of course. Appreciate all the effort mate. Would have taken ages to make and edit this 🙏🏻. OG RE games are still the greatest games made in my opinion, so thoroughly enjoyed.
It's not available for purchase on PS5. It's tied to a subscription service that only allows you access to the game so long as you keep paying for the subscription. Also they can remove the game from the service at any time. I appreciate the kind words. Thank you.
I bought this in 1996 when it first came out. The tank controls were all we had then, duel shock was invented yet. So then it was fine. The only reason why people don't like. It now is because now we have options.
4:56 just a little constructive criticism, please don't put music with vocals under your commentary. It's very distracting no matter how low in the mix it is. Love your content and I'm not trying to be a jerk, just a suggestion Edit: 7:56 okay thankfully you don't do that throughout the whole video which was what I was afraid of. Complaint dodged. Sorry man.
Yeah I usually avoid doing that. But the opening song of Resident Evil fit too much to not include it. Plus I'm speaking English whilst the song is Japanese, so it shouldn't cause too many problems. Hope you enjoy the video.
I think the original has the better opening. You can basically head to any direction you want and find something useful whereas the remake forces you to play the new sections first. The greenhouse on the other hand is a big improvement.
My friend, try an indie game called: "Them & us" its hugely inspired from og RE games. Its level design, puzzles, enemies, gameplay won't disappoint you.
The original Resident Evil... It's a game I respect more than I like. It was a revolutionary game, and it still is; the monsters are memorable and the mansion and puzzles therein are entertaining. However, I feel it hasn't aged as gracefully as its successors have. This is mainly down to bright lighting, awful voice acting and moreso a sense that things needed further polishing. The remake on the other hand IS that polishing and then some. The darker environments, more gruesome monsters, superior (though still cheesy) voice acting, new surprises for those familiar with the original and refined gameplay make it easily one of three greatest survival horror games of all time (others being Silent Hills 1 & 2). It's great GOG now sells the original, but the REmake will always be my preference.
Idk, I still prefer playing the original if I just want a good, stress free time with RE1. Needing to carry two extra items around any time I think about killing a zombie is kind of annoying on repeat playthroughs
@@lindblumpickles3407 I... Respect your opinion and wish a you a good day. What, were you expecting me to insult you? You provided solid reasoning for why someone would prefer RE Vanilla over REmake.

Resident Evil 4 might have the same tank controls, but (!) it has a very important difference: the camera! The difficulty in RE 1 to 3 wasn't the tank controls itself. It was how you perceive yourself while using those controls. Tank controls were perfect to not confuse the players with the cameras used, but the cameras were still confusing. As much as i dislike RE 4, but that's gone. The camera always points to where you look. I know that the cameras in RE 1 were chosen due to technical limitations, and it was a really smart choice. I disagree. I think fixed camera perspectives add a lot to the game with cinematography, visual design, atmosphere and guiding players via the camera. I like the direction Resident Evil 4 went with, but I will always have a soft spot for old school Resident Evil.
He does mention that at the end of the video but more efforts should be made to make them accessible on ALL platforms, not just one. I think the remake, while great on the first playthrough, loses a lot of its charm on subsequent playthroughs. Crimson Heads become irrelevant because you really need to fight only one. Puzzles have become tedious, especially the block pushing ones. A lot of time spent with backtracking doing busy work that was not present in the original. Like Lisa in the caves. Atmosperic, yes. But gameplay-wise, you run around, pushing a box and pressing switches. Would have been ok if Lisa was a dangerous enemy, but she is nothing. Same goes for the fuel capsule. Cool the first time, unnecessary tedium later. Or how much of a detour you need to take to use the V-Jolt. Enemies have some bullshit properties too. Zombies have double lunges, screwing over your attempts at baiting their grabs. Dogs do not flinch anymore, sometimes tanking even the shotgun blast. And so on. Original is more tightly and cleverly designed. DS version is my favourite version of RE1.
