ALF follows the adventures of Gordon Shumway, a furry, wise-cracking alien from the planet Melmac who crash lands into the garage of the Tanner family. The Tanners offer him a home and give him the nickname ALF, short for “Alien Life Form.” Created by Tom Patchett (The Carol Burnett Show) and Paul Fusco (who also performed as ALF), the half-hour sitcom rose to popularity in the late 1980s, cementing itself in the pop culture zeitgeist.

Poor Alf. Even as a kid, that was one thing that stuck with me. Gordon’s planet had blown up. Other than Skip and Rhonda and Rick, everybody that he used to know is dead. Flo and Bob, his mother, and father., Curtis, his brother, which is made all the more real to me because my brother is also named Curtis. His little sister, Augie, even the bird and the dog. Everybody that Gordon Shumway loved from his family is dead. I like to think that maybe the Shumways got away. Or at least that they didn’t suffer much. I know a lot of people didn’t like working on ALF, but it did touch peoples lives, and they should know that. Even as a little kid in the 1980s, I always wondered if Earth would end up like Melmac. It used to scare me. It still does. I know he was an obnoxious puppet, but Alf did touch lives.
I feel the exact same way as you, I always felt so horrible for Alf, I feel like part of the reason why he's so goofy and makes wise cracks is to cover up the pain and loneliness inside, it's not easy losing a loved one but imagine losing your entire planet, everything you knew, all the culture, all the people, everything wonderful and fun about melmac is gone.. :(
