There are two. The other is being put in a museum in B.C. They served both Canada and the USA and fitting that there is a home for one if each country.
As long as it exists and preserved, it's well worth it. People often criticize the British Museum for housing stolen artifacts from other cultures but with what had happened in the homelands they were from, it's best that they stay in Britain.
My brother flew the MARS aircraft as a flight engineer while in the Navy from Pearl Harbor to Alameda, CA. He got out of the Navy just prior to the MARS aircraft being retired from the Navy. Too bad the US Naval Aviation museum in Pensacola, FL could not have obtained it.
The Naval Aviation Museum should be its final resting place. They would have to build a special building for it. The Mars and PB2Y-5R Coronado could have shared the hangar.
The problem with the Naval Air Museum at Pensacola is that most of their large aircraft are stored outdoors. Consequently, any hurricane like the recent (2024) Helene and Milton ones could spell disaster for the Mars and the other U.S. Navy aircraft stored outside such as the Lockheed EC-131 "Warning Star," "Blue Angels" C-130A "Fat Albert" (the original one) and a P-3 Orion. I was at this museum last year (2023) and asked, "when they're going to build a hanger to house the "big stuff"" and I was told, "when the funding is available." Bear in mind that any such hangar has to be built to withstand a major hurricane so the building will be very expensive to put up.
