  • The last airworthy Martin Mars water bomber, named "Hawaii Mars", gets a glorious send off as she is retired to the British Columbia Aviation Museum in Sidney, BC. The aircraft, owned by Coulson Aviation, took off from her home base in Sproat Lake for one final flight around the area, including joint flybys with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, before landing for the very last time in Patricia Bay near the Victoria International Airport. Thousands of people turned out to see her final flight and landing.

    What impressed me most about this aircraft is the enormous time span of aviation it represents. Pacific clippers of 30’s, bygone era of luxury and when air travel was still an adventure. Rest easy Big Bird . . You made it intact to the Aviation PearlyGate. Thanks for sharing.

    Landing that war horse for the last time had to be a very emotional moment for the crew. When you consider the men who conceived, built, and maintained these aircraft over the years it makes you think about those who have gone us and what a tremendous debt we owe them.

    I’m sad. I’m actually crying. I’m old enough to remember this plane and I have watched aviation continue to advance for the future. Recently I saw an amphibious plane that was restored in Alaska at the Aviation Museum. But yeah I’m vintage like this plane

    I remember when the Hawaii Mars was moored here in Lake Elsinore California. I had the pleasure of seeing it multiple times up close while boating. What an amazing machine to see land, take off and fly. Im glad to have met this bird

      The B-26 Marauder was another really good plane they made, even of it did have fairly lengthy “teething” process. Earlier versions were notoriously difficult to fly, which earned them the nickname “The Widow Maker”. Later versions corrected these issues though and the Marauder was said to be a pretty rugged plane, not unlike the B-17 and the P-47.

      Probably none. BC simply doesn’t have the population density.
      More people have died in aircraft fighting fires than in the fires themselves in BC.

      Apparently someone saw #3 start smoking when it flew over Powell River, so the plane ended up coming in ahead of schedule, glad it made it ok.

    If anyone wants to know exactly what kind of goosebumps these planes give you, put in some quality earbuds or headphones and crank them all the way up. That’s as close to what the Mars sounds like at that range in person. I grew up around the Mars and it really does get emotional knowing that it’s all over for them.

    Its sad to see this magnificent flying tanker be retired, but its about 79 years old. Future generations will have to depend on videos to see it in flight & will never have the privilege of being eyewitness to this majestic bird in flight. Its four Merlin Rolls Royce engines generate 10,000 hp & the throb of the engines vibrate your chest as the piston engines generate their power. Martin Mars in flight truly is a magnificent awe inspiring sight to behold. Coulson donated the Martin "Hawaii" Mars to the Aviation Museum in Sidney, B.C. I am glad that it is staying in British Columbia. I'm from Port Alberni & have become used to seeing the Martin Mars water bomber stationed on Sproat Lake ever since I was a kid. It will be sorely missed.

      The Mars had 4 Pratt & Whitney 4360 ci, 4 row corncob, 28 cylinders each, 3000 hp, air cooled, not Rolls Royce! Spruce Goose, B 36 used same engines.

    It was tough to watch her come in for her final landing. I worked fires below them in the early 2000's, they never left much for the ground crews to put out.

    What a beautiful aircraft. A copy of a "Shorts Sunderland Flying Boat"'' that fought with great distinction, against the "U Boat Threat" that attacked convoys in the North Atlantic during WW2. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

      Coldwater Divers and Coulson Aviation technicians started to attach “beaching gear” to its undercarriage and tail on Monday, wheeled mechanisms that will allow the heavy plane to be pulled out of the water and up the ramp at Patricia Bay.
      Nichol said the moving crews are awaiting high tides on Wednesday to pull the plane out. It will likely be the last time its massive engines will rumble.
      Its future at the museum will be as a static display.
      The “de-watering” process is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, when Hawaii Martin Mars will be manoeuvred through the Patricia Bay breakwaters and slowly winched up a Canadian Coast Guard ramp onto a concrete apron.
      Crews will spray down the plane to remove salt water.
      Nickel Brothers Moving, contracted to move the plane and well known for moving houses and other large unwieldy objects such as shiploaders, had previously measured every area of the coast guard facility with lasers, down to the millimetre, to plan the move.
      Bringing Hawaii Martin Mars out of the water will be a “full-circle moment” for the aircraft. This was the original ramp and location used in 1960 to bring the aircraft on land to convert it into the era’s cutting-edge water bomber, Nichol said.
      Using a large crane, Nickel Brothers will fit the Martin Mars into a swivelling carriage and onto a heavy-haul trailer that will allow operators to ­manoeuvre the plane as the truck moves toward the B.C. Aviation Museum.
      Next week, in co-ordination with federal, provincial and civic authorities, as well as RCMP, movers will start taking down power poles, light standards and fencing for the crossing of West Saanich Road onto the airport lands.
      The move will take place in the early morning when all air traffic has halted. The plane will inch across various runways to reach the museum at the eastern edge of YYJ.
      Hawaii Martin Mars will be placed on a new concrete slab at its outdoor display location next to the B.C. Aviation Museum building at 1910 Norseman Rd..
      The day after the move, visitors will be able to walk around the outside of the aircraft while crews complete display preparations over several weeks, said Nichol.
      A grand opening of the exhibit is set for Sept. 28. The museum is planning an “open experience format” so everyone can explore inside the aircraft and have an opportunity to sit in the pilots’ seats.
      The cost to the museum so far has been about $750,000, said Nichol. That includes the $250,000 the museum paid Coulson Aviation to acquire Hawaii Martin Mars and $250,000 for the move. The province has provided $250,000.
      Nichol said Coulson Aviation picked up the cost to get Hawaii Martin Mars airworthy again. Its last firefighting mission was in 2015.
      The long-term plan is to build a massive hangar to house Hawaii Martin Mars and other vintage firefighting aircraft, including the museum’s Corvair 580 and Douglas A26 Invader.
      Nichol said the museum will start a fundraising campaign soon to raise money to build the hangar.
      “It will have to be about 220 feet wide and long to get the Hawaii Mars in, and the other planes will just sit under its wings,” said Nichol.

      For those not familiar with the local geography, Victoria International Airport (YYJ) is about 30 kilometres north of the city.
      At the west end of the airport precinct is Patricia Bay, which has a Canadian Coast Guard Base and the Institute of Ocean Sciences. The marine aerodrome where the Hawaii Mars touched down is situated in Patricia Bay. The British Columbia Aviation Museum is at the southeast end of the airport precinct, so when Nickel Bros transfers the Hawaii Mars to the museum it’ll follow two of the main runways.
      The first low pass by the Hawaii Mars, with the RCAF Snowbirds in formation around her, headed southeast directly above the BC Aviation Museum. When she returned without the Snowbirds 25 minutes later, after a circuit of the Greater Victoria waterfront, she was again directly above the BC Aviation Museum but this time headed northwest. So there’s lots of footage of her as testament to the fact that she really did come to YYJ under her own power.

    I don't know if I dreamed it or if there was a movie, series or cartoon, but I remember the Martin Mars clearly depicted, maybe not flying, maybe in a water hangar. It wasn't a documentary.

    Not having been able to keep up with the whole saga, what would it take to get the Philippine Mars flying again? It seems a bloody shame to not have at least one still being used as intended. These birds are a tremendous firefighting asset.

      The Philippine Mars is also retired and will be going to the US at the end of the month, I believe. These wonderful machines have been retired due to, mainly, metal fatigue all through the frames.

      @@lizzyfolks9116 There is also the issue of fuel…less and less availability of sufficient volumes of “av gas” for it’s piston engines. Many aircraft of medium to large size are being converted to turbo-prop engines due to the greater availability of jet fuel…especially in the locations where a water bomber is to be used. (See the story of the conversion of the CL-215 water bomber to the 415, and now the 515 variants: the turbo- beaver: turbo and twin otters). More power, lighter weight, wider availability of fuel. Plus, parts for the engines now have to be custom made in a “one-off” and very costly process. Simply put, “the world of aviation has moved on”.

      @@calvinnickel9995 You really want to make asinine comments like that? How many THOUSANDS of vintage aircraft are there these days? Ever hear of Commemorative Air Force? LOTS of organizations around that take care of and keep aircraft like this flying. Ask them how they do it. I just think taking a perfectly good, flying-condition aircraft out of service and holing it up in a museum to collect dust is a waste. There are only two Mars left, and now neither of them are flying.

      ​@MarkRenn how many of those thousands of war birds are large flying boats ? They are alot more expensive and harder to maintain and there is also the problem of were to keep it and operate it from. the large organisations operate from airbase not lakes. Unfortunately it's just not financially viable to operate such a large specialised aircraft. . An English chap tried it with a Sunderland and went bankrupt. I don't know what happened to it though

    While impressive, if your product is still being used 80 years later you may have over engineered or overbuilt your product…..

    So sad when flying history is lost to museums. There is nothing to looking at something that should be flying. My heart sank when I heard about this and it's still sick. On the contrary I've heard from other sources that six or seven others still exist so I'm not losing hope to see another one fly again.

      There were only seven Martin Mars built only two survive today. Hawaii Mars and Philippine Mars. The rest were either scrapped or destroyed in accidents.
      That said, they NEED to be preserved , flying them only for the sake of flying them is too risky for such historic aircraft.

      @@That_Stealth_Guy Hmm there are only two flying B-29s but thank goodness they are in the air where they should be. I cannot see spending perhaps millions of dollars to restore something like that and then just let them sit in a museum gathering dust.

      @@muffs55mercury61 I would love for them and other historic aircraft to continue to fly. There comes a point that it better to save them in museums than it is to try to maintain them in flyable condition.
