"For nearly three decades, the Department of Defense has used taxpayer money to send elite military officers to work for some of the Pentagon’s top private contractors. The public-private arrangement has allowed corporate lobbying disguised as policy recommendations to reach the highest branches of the Defense Department, according to an exclusive report from the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft shared with The Lever.
From 1995 to 2021, more than 315 military officers with elite ranks as high as colonel and rear admiral have been placed at top weapons manufacturers such as Boeing, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin, as well as other companies with billion-dollar government contracts. The arrangement has also coincided with a dramatic rise in Defense Department spending on private contractors valued in the trillions of dollars."

I retired as an engineer from the aerospace & defense industry three years ago. This is news to me. I've never encountered any military officers assigned to corporations. My guess is that they may have been located in executive areas - program offices and mahogany rows.
The services have a rather arcane way of promoting officers in procurement. There is a lot of secrecy and a lot of politics within the procurement agencies. To get into this pipeline, having attended a service academy or getting a PhD from a top engineering school like MIT is common. I've noticed the staff to be the most intolerant in the sector; they are very particular with whom they want to interact with. It's a good bet that almost all are corporate conservative Republicans.

What's crazy is that anyone would expect a military officer to learn anything from a corporate organization that was specifically engineered to extract the maximum amount of government contract money for the minimal amount of effort. The military are CUSTOMERS of defense contractors, ostensibly. Arguably, the boots-on-the-ground soldier, as the primary consumer of military supply companies, can already provide every insight anyone in leadership would need to how effective various organizations are.

I worked as an engineer for a huge defense contractor for years. There is a big difference between the way government works and how business works and they often don't communicate well or even have the same goals at times. I can understand how this program could lead to better workflow between the two entities.
There are many more contractors than there are government employees. Nearly all functional roles have already been outsourced to contractors in an effort to grow private businesses of all sizes. Most government employees that I interacted with were simply managing contractors.

Plus, taxpayers pay for their materials required for their products and politicians and the wealthy buy the stock and receive 100% of the profits from the sale of what we pay for. Why don't the people who pay for the product be included in the profit end? The profits of taxpayer labor should go to reducing the tax burden and providing infrastructure and support for citizens and not into pockets that are already too full. America could be almost as wealthy as some of the countries and corporations they give the rest of our money to but..... IT'S NOT A RIGGED GAME!!!!!

Is this supposed to be News?? Prime contractors actually have been getting paid by the DoD to write DoD RFP's and bids since before the Vietnam war. They write these in a way that they are the only qualified contractor to win the bid.

So you’re saying the DOD sends moles to learn the trade, so they can work for the companies as lobbyists. No wonder we are $34 trillion in debt.

Part of the military benefit is the higher education Ana. Everyone from the lowest rank enlisted Admirals & Generals are expected to become better educated. If an officer knows how a company works, he can better understand what the company can and can't do for his service branch. He knows who to reach out to when problems show up.
