      I'm so enjoying this video. That take-away you make starting at 8:38 about "holding on to an optimistic sense of goodness towards the world even at the risk of seeming naive" actually really resonates for me as someone who has studied the worst of human conduct, such as genocides. Our species as a whole lives most harmoniously when cultivating "yes we can" optimism and empathy rather than cynical condemnation towards humankind.
      And there are so many Captain America type people in the world, those who reduce people's suffering or foster harmony - we don't yet celebrate them as much as we could : )
      Thank you again for this well-made video, looking forward to watching the second half of it.

      I'm going to miss him as Captain America. In the first movie, he looked the part, acted the part, and became the Cap I remembered as a young boy reading Marvel comics (I still have my original comic where he donned the Black Cap costume the first time, it's a favorite to read and re-read). But as he went on into other movies and as he made more of himself known...I genuinely can't think of a better person to play Captain America. Just like I can't imagine Iron Man as anyone aside from Robert Downey, Jr., I want Chris Evans to always be Captain America. He really does personify everything that made the character one I adored as a child, and as I wish I could be as an adult.

      As an international relations student and political science major, I could've shown you a slew of research articles illustrating this, but what the Marvel movies have shown does a much more effective way of showing this concept of ever-shifting agendas, especially with Age of Ultron and Infinity War. Plus, it's a much more fun way to have superheroes show this concept of power-struggles among sparring groups throughout history!

    Marvel Studios definitely hit it out of the park casting Chris Evans as Cap. He's brought depth and pathos to what could have been a cardboard caricature. I'm sure Marvel always intended to bring complexity to what had formerly been a straight arrow superhero. But with Evans, they got an actor with the acting chops, intellect and physicality to take the Captain America on a wide ranging and deeply satisfying character arc.

    The Winter Soldier is the best thing that happened to Steve. It helped to shape his behavior and personality in Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. It helped him to understand that the path for the greater good isn't always the clear one.
    Cap crashed himself into the ocean to stop HYDRA, but like him, it just slept for years. And now he's in this weird and new time having to fight against his old enemy. It also helped to show him that things aren't as clear as it was in the old days. My favorite part is his conversation in the car with Natasha. "Lying isn't a good way to live." "Yeah, but it's a good way to not dying.", she replies. Brilliant contrast.
    Later he stays against the Accords because he knows that not only it will be used as tool on some political game, but most importantly, will be useless when a threat comes out of nowhere, like when he is talking with Ross in Infinity War. Thanos just declared war against all life in the universe. Not just U.S., not just Earth, the whole universe, he doesn't care about this Accord you made.

      I've come to see the entire MCU cycle thus far as a metaphor for the decline and fall of American hegemony. Think about where we started with Iron Man...pretty much our world with hidden history that first became uncovered in Incredible Hulk. But the Battle of New York table flipped the whole timeline and the fall of SHIELD at Cap's hands scared the shit out of every national government on Earth.
      Thus one can see the Accord as a last vain attempt by the establishment to seize back power these superpowered individuals are taking from them. But, as you pointed out, threats like Thanos make that nonsense completely irrelevant.

    I feel like what happens in Winter Soldier and Civil War with Bucky has more to do with Steve's personal trauma than his morality (though that is definitely involved). I think the interview at 14:07 is referencing the fact that Steve spends all his time saving the world, but he never spends time working on himself. He's a man out of time, and after Peggy dies, Bucky is all that's left of his past life. I think that his closest friends like Sam and Natasha understand that element of what goes on in Civil War, even if on the surface it looks like Team Cap is fighting against the accords, or trying to stop a bunch of evil winter soldier clones. It's about giving Steve permission to be selfish and to have love outside of his love of helping people, especially with all the trauma he's been through being frozen for 70 years.

    • @johnathonhaney8291

    • @vadalia3860
      @vadalia3860 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I don't know that I agree, given the alternatives in Civil War (in WS, I think ending Shield/Hydra is based on his morality while what he does with Bucky is based on his emotion- he doesn't let Bucky stop him from his mission to bring Shield/Hydra down but, once that's accomplished, he is willing to lose his life for just the opportunity to reach Bucky) In Civil War, when Steve thinks the U.N. bomb was set by Bucky, he explicitly says he should be the one to bring Bucky in because he's "the one least likely to die trying". So his choices are to either play nice with the Accords or to prevent people from being killed when they go after Bucky. Easy choice because the former isn't even a real alternative.
      Once he knows Bucky wasn't behind the bombing he's got another choice- letting an innocent person go it alone with every law enforcement agency in the world having a kill order out on them or helping that person. Again, easy choice. In fact, although Steve and Bucky having a past together helps with the time frame of Steve believing Bucky's telling the truth, I'm pretty sure he'd make the same choice even for a stranger who was in the same situation as Bucky (once they established it wasn't a trick or lie) Same thing with fighting Team Ironman in the airport to stop the Winter Soldier wannabes- what's the alternative? Surrender and just let the wannabes run amok? Or tell Tony about... oh wait, he tried telling Tony and got interrupted with "I've run out of patience" and Team Ironman throwing the first punch. Fighting to get to the wannabes and then fighting the wannabes (or so he thought) are the only realistic alternatives.

    • @KookiesNolly
      @KookiesNolly 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      WEEEEEEElllll I think it's a mix of both: his LOVE for Bucky (don't try to change my mind) and his sense of morality.
      I see what you mean but I also believe that his moral stance is pretty obvious as well and he has reasons to be against Insight and the Accords that go beyond his personal relationships. Even if you take all those relationships out of the picture, his reasons still make sense. It makes sense for Cap to be against the presumption of guilt because he has always stood for liberty and respect for human rights. Because of that, he is also against surrendering his free will to any government after he realized that their moral codes and imperatives are different from his and as he said he can't ignore any situation that is pointing south. He genuinely believes that mass control of the population isn't protection and that governments can be corrupted thus aren't worthy of his blind faith. He literally states his stands at the beginning of each movie and over the course of it, they don't change much. His relationships give him an extra reason to do what he was already going to do, he doesn't change his mind because of them.
      Also, I wouldn't say he was that selfish either. In Civil War, he really went the extra mile to protect Bucky (with the whole airport thing) when he was sure Bucky was innocent and there was a lot more at stake. It would have been indeed selfish to abandon the whole team and put people in danger to protect a terrorist that doesn't even want to be around you, but that's not what he did. He tried to protect an innocent man. He is just acting out of his moral principles, and it just so happen that the innocent is his lover (again you can't change my mind). We have no reason to believe that he wouldn't stand for people who are wrongly accused regardless of his relationships to them. In fact, we have every reason to believe that he would definitely stand for them because it's the right thing, and the dude literally fought his own employers, destroying his only source of income, because it was the right thing lol.
      His connections might influence his actions a little but I think it's reductive to say that they have more power over his decisions than his moral code.
      Also, when you think about it it's his code that influences his relationships. One of the reasons why he loves Peggy is because they share a similar code for example, and when Nat starts acting like a reliable teammate, the kind of teammate that Cap values, their relationship gets stronger. Same with Sam, he is a patriot, he never runs away from a fight and he agrees with Cap's motives and principles and has been very loyal to him: they have the same code and that's definitely making their bond stronger.

      you are missing 1 crucial aspect : when your best friend needs your help you should try the best moral way to help him. For me Steve is selfish when he says that he trust individuals more then government. But everyone else who says they trust government more then indivuals are selfish. It is not a trauma or PTSD like most people say, there is no real proof for that. Being a man out of time doesnt mean you suffer a trauma or PTDS. you That is more a disconnected Feeling to that time, world and people, thats the reason why cap says he tried to serve and it didnt work, not because of a trauma. He was trying to get back in time, but he realized the world has changed and it doenst work. But what hasnt changed is his trust in individuals. That was the reason he didnt fight bucky in the end, it was his final attempt to gift Bucky freedom from his brainwashing and that is the reason too why he tries to protect him from Black Panther and Stark. It is NOT his trauma it is his morality and that youtube video explains that ALOT.

They said it would be clear what they meant when we watch End Game, but no one has specifed that Cap will die or live. End Game is definitely the last film Captain America will have a main role in, but depending on the character's fate, Cap may pop up in the future as a cameo figure or in flashbacks. Personally I would have liked to see Cap interact with Spidey more to give him a more direction into what it means to be a hero, but we probably won't get that now. I think Evans will be back occasionally for a few scenes, but not for a while since he probably wants to do other stuff.

    Even better than thinking for yourself and taking the stand, Cap takes responsibility for every stand he made. It in itself is the answer to prevention of imperialism. Cap refused to sign UN accords because they would take his responsibility away just as much as the freedom. When we talk of heroic activities, we tend to do away with the responsibility that comes with it. That's why the captain America films are my favourite. They explicitly deal with this responsibility.

    • @colincampbell767
      @colincampbell767 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Something I suspect is that Stark supported the accords because they would transfer responsibility to someone else. @@colincampbell767 that can be your argument. But I feel like just because Stark is opposed to Cap, it's not necessary that his reasoning should be completely opposite as well. Captain said that the best hands were still their own. Stark didn't believe that. He could not trust himself to do the right thing or rather, everything he did, felt wrong to him. You can say that he didn't want to take the responsibility. You would be right. But it feels more because he didn't believe himself to be appropriately responsible, more than any moral cowardice. Stark as character, was not meant to handle the weight of the world on his shoulders. Does any of this make sense? Idk.. :)

      @@harshadasamant6211 I think it's both what you said and what Colin said. He can't trust himself to do the right thing. Having that responsibility *hurts.* That encounter he had with the grieving mother who blamed him, personally, encapsulates everything that went into his agreement with the Accords. He wants to keep being a hero, but he doesn't want the responsibility for making decisions, the consequences for those decisions, or the guilt that comes from both. Instead of working on himself to *be* more responsible, he handed over part of his free will to someone else.
      'Cause here's the thing, Tony could've just quit being Iron Man. He could've spent all that time developing new suits and weapons on developing powered limb braces and prosthetics. He could've been a hero by revolutionizing the medical field. But he's an addict without the self-control to stay on the wagon. Worse, most people around him are enabling his addiction because they don't realize it *is* an addiction. Pepper probably does, but there's not much she can do about it (though telling the other Avengers would be a good start, just saying).
      Also doesn't help that he *is* personally responsible for what happened with Ultron. I mean, really, a near omniscient AI programmed to protect humanity? Has he not watched *any* sci-fi from the last 50 years?

      Tyrant-Den i think it could be argued that steve is still lawful good - by the modern take on what constitutes "lawful", strict adherence to one's own personal code of ethics still counts as lawful for the purposes of alignment. and even if we're not allowing him to remain lawful, since i can definitely see a case being made for civil war tipping him over the line to a different part of the good scale, i don't know if i'd go for chaotic good. steve isn's inherently opposed to rules, laws, or institutions, and he doesn't think they're anathema to freedom. he's more neutral good, in my opinion - accepting of the rules and institutions that actually help people, opposed to those that don't. he's not an anarchist, nor is he blindly adherent to any government.
      of course, if we're going with the interpretation that lawful good means following the law at all times, steve has always been neutral good. even before he was frozen there are many examples of him creatively interpreting rules and outright flouting those he doesn't agree with. hell, he broke federal law five times just trying to get into the army!
      personally, all this in mind, if i had to align steve anywhere on the d&d alignment chart, i'd put him solidly in neutral good.

      It's a valid argument but I see it differently. Tony has always been, at his heart, an establishment guy. So what's the real difference between supporting the government through weapons manufacturing or by backing the Accords? Steve, on the other hand, is a lifelong misfit who has never liked bullies, potential or active. So the only real difference I see between his punching out Nazis and daring to go his own way against a majority of the world's governments is that, in the latter example, he is taking on people that puts him at odds with every influential ally he has left.

    • @flatebo1
      @flatebo1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Tony very much hasn't become Lawful Good. He still flouts the rules when he finds them inconvenient, which is a lot of the time. He just knows he can use his influence and money to make any consequences go away. He repeatedly offers to do just that in Civil War for Steve: Just sign and Tony will get everyone to give Steve a pass. And, of course, there's Tony's tracking Steve and Bucky down for a face to face in the old Winter Soldier bunker without letting the higher ups the Accords say he's presumably answerable to knowing what's up. Heck, he explicitly ditches his oversight so they won't even know he's gone. Pretty much everything Tony has ever done has been entirely self-interested. So I'm thinking he's pretty much True Neutral as he's only even a superhero in reaction to the bad guys trying to force him onto their side.

He's constantly *trying* to do right things, even if he fails, he still tries so hard because he just doesnt want to be a let down. He'd rather lead and nurture everyone than follow and abide by someone's rules. Tony also had a lot of character development after infinity war and endgame (ahem ahem) but cap's character really felt...close to me. How lost he was. How conflicted he was in his decision after being so adamant all the time about them. How he was played around by so many people yet found his *own personality*. Chris evans couldnt have been better to play for him because of his own personal life and how it gave him confidence to Develop this character. What makes Captain America interesting is not that he stands for "what's right", because nearly everyone does that, and in CA: Civil War, both sides are doing what they think is right. What makes Cap's morality interesting is that he is always aware of the "human cost". Cap never dehumanizes or humiliates his enemies, he's concerned with how something will tangibly benefit real people. In First Avenger and Avengers, he's anti-despots.
    In Winter Soldier and Civil War, he's coming to terms with how fear has corrupted institutions he thought were once "good", symbolized by Shield's basically being Hydra this whole time, to Civil War in which the rift is not merely oversight vs no oversight, but that once again the institutions he once served no longer have understanding or compassion as their aim - Cap wanted to reach out to Bucky on a personal level, whereas the agencies that Iron Man came to be a representative for wanted to apply inhumane legal procedures to capture and kill Bucky. Cap was realizing that, once again, authority was overriding compassion and understanding.
    Bucky in Civil War could represent a lot of the people the US wages war on or is fearful of - how a good villain distracts people from seeing the real forces manipulating them.

    The First Avenger but also the most important. Without Cap there’s no direction because he never forgets the real reason why you fight: people. Stark loses sight of that in nearly every film, Fury doesn’t truly trust people, Thor and Panther only know leading people by ruling them (they’re learning), Widow doesn’t know herself, Clint doesn’t always feel capable, Bruce doesn’t feel human, etc.
    As much as I worry about losing Cap/Evans after Endgame I worry more about who steps in to provide that direction. Perhaps Captain Marvel provides it, especially given their similar backgrounds and stories, plus how that mirrors the comics. However, currently, I feel like the character most befitting is Spidey. Obviously he’s too young and inexperienced, plus Disney would never rely that heavily on a character they didn’t own.

Even before the seven decade nap, he is a man who has never fit. That's why the world needed him...not just for his strength, shield or strategic mind but for his perspective. It's going to hurt my heart when he dies in A4.

    When that petrified SHIELD agent, in Winter Soldier, refused to launch the carriers , even with a gun to his head, saying "Captain's Orders", tells you it takes one man to inspire us to do the right thing. Captain America is the representative of that man. Is he right all the time? Oh God no...but he is moral and loyal. If the MCU had gone Zach Synder and went "dark" it would have ruined the core of the 10 year journey of the MCU. That is why we all walked out of Infinity War in shocked silence as we saw the characters we love decimated by loss and sudden death. That is why the only DC movie that worked was Wonder Woman because her and Cap care about others and are willing to pay any personal price to protect them. In April, after Endgame, I will stop at the nearest bar and toast the passing of Captain America; and maybe I can live up to his example as an American.

      I still remember the shock of that ending of Infinity War. I knew it was coming in one form or another. It was still too horrible to watch...and it only meant something because Feige and Co did their job right. When I had time to process it, I realized that, with one movie, Marvel Studios had just outdone DCEU in the darkness department. Endgame seems to promise more of that.

      Johnathon Haney True. But dark for the sake of the story not because you think that is what "fans" want. And, in DC, their dark is harming others against the characters normal code of honor, here, it was because they tried to protect others, desperately, and failed. And if anyone tells you they did not get choked up or shed tears when Peter was begging Tony for help then your are either a cold empty human being, or a liar.

He's born to play that character that will remembered.. even we him playing Captain America forever but the actor is getting aged, like in Civil War MCU, said himself that he do what he want has happening today, Chris Evans doing what he want for his career and having love life like in civil war.. The Captain America trilogy has some the MCU's best writing in my opinion. Steve and Peggy's last exchange in First Avenger, "Price of Freedom" speech in Winter Soldier, his letter to Tony in Civil War. Even the smaller exchanges like "This isn't freedom, this is fear" or "They're run by people with agendas and agendas change" are eerily relevant today. The trilogy proves that you can't write off superhero movies as simplistic and childish, there are really fascinating philosophies, beautiful conversations, and intriguing characters that accompany the pounding action.

      Its sad to see the majority of people can't stand by that. Individualism. Not expecting the government to help but other people. It seems people like the idea but not the practice. Easiest example is welfare. We once had communities and charities that individuals could rely upon when in need but then expected to pay back in kind. That was lost over the last 100 years and now the American message is FORCE others to provide via the government due to not being accountable to anyone in return. :(

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Considering our country was founded by booting out a government, yeah.
      @@arthurkleeb6575 Yeah, I remember growing up hearing that America had less charitable spending than any other first world country. Dad would always point out that they're just counting *government* spending, not the massive number of private charities that, if counted, would put America near the front of the pack.
      Thankfully, we haven't completely lost those charities and communities. There's a food exchange in my hometown that Mom goes to once a month. We often get mystery boxes around Christmas time. And there are a *bunch* of clinics and dentists scattered around the upper Midwest dedicated specifically to serving low-income families.
      And I'm speaking as someone who's *on* welfare. I hate dealing with all the bureaucratic nonsense and knowing that I'm living on someone else's taxes. I've also tried, repeatedly, to support myself. I'm painfully aware that I'd be living on charity no matter the source. If nothing else, there's no way I'd be able to afford the medications I need to stay semi-functional otherwise. On the upside with the federal government, I'm not stuck in whatever area served by a local charity. I've had to move a few times, which is stressful enough without having to find new charities and reapply for *everything.*
      Then again, if I was dealing with a private charity, I'd be more likely to deal with people who actually *care* instead of seeing you as just an interruption to their workday. Where I'm at now is okay, but there are a *lot* of people working for social security and the like who are... just kinda rude.

    Captain America is what makes the MCU good. He brings questions that we can all relate to and talk about. What I like about the MCU so far is that unlike some other franchises, it has not taken a partisan position when discussing these topics, at least not overtly. Whatever moral is being discussed it is shown with a balance where multiple viewpoints are being shown. I'm sure most of the people working at Marvel Studios are left-leaning but I as a conservative I can still find my viewpoint being presented without judgement and for that I'm very thankful for.
    I've been very satisfied with the Captain America of the MCU as he represents all that I like for a person, even politically in our current time. I'm a very patriotic person but that doesn't mean I follow whatever my government is saying is good for my country. Like Cap, I distrust the government more than ever. Cap actually represents a lot of what people like me want. When he rejected the Sokovia Accords coming from the U.N., I agreed because I too don't like it when my country hop on board on U.N. signings. I believe in sovereignty over an international organization that most often than not doesn't have my interest at heart. We are better off making our own decision because each country or in the MCU, the Avengers, can respond and customize our actions based on our own needs.
    Many people look down at the MCU saying it's just mindless entertainment and whilst it is partly the case, the sort of discussion about governments intervention, loyalty and such shows that behind the action scenes and special effects lies a thought-out story based on real issues. To me the MCU is a very well rounded franchise that entertains and also contains good content if you take the time to think about it. I hope this balance will last for awhile, but I must admit with Captain America likely to be gone after End Game, I'm kind of losing my hope.

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Precisely. One of my sisters prefers Tony Stark because he's more flawed and thus more believable. I prefer Steve Rogers because of everything you said, what this video said, and because his flaws come from his strengths. I mean, come on! He committed *fraud* multiple times trying to join the army! He ditched Bucky, his best friend, the evening before deployment to try signing up *again.* And his inability to ignore situations heading south doesn't always end well, either. His flaws aren't as obvious as Tony's ego, addition, and daddy issues, but they're still there and make a compelling character who also stands as a symbol of what we can be at our best.

    What I feel like this video hinted at but didn't really delve that deep into is Cap's self-possessed drive is his most admirable trait only because his intentions are pure. The very same self-assuredness can just as easily be a villainous trait. When Sharon Carter recounts her Aunt Peggy's quote about "telling the world, no you move" (which interestingly enough is something Cap himself says in the comics), it's inspiring on its face, but it's the very same impulse that can lead people to eschew climate science research in favor gut instinct. I think Cap is kind of problematic in that respect, the "I know I'm right and you can't convince me otherwise" mindset.

    • @kahkah1986
      @kahkah1986 ปีที่แล้ว

      what is interesting is that he does respond to changing circumstances, though. You would think he would be rigid with that kind of mindset, but he isn't; there is an element of contradiction there, though, you are right, that he shouldn't be as flexible as he is with that attitude.

But that idea, that what America *is* is a nation of principle, that without our principles we are nothing, is what I have always loved. Cap isn't just a hero, he's an idealist. Would you be willing to do a video on Bucky? So many people wrongfully blame him for things, saying that he's evil. Yet he's been brain-washed, had his memories altered, and he was conditioned into becoming a weapon against his will without even knowing it. He didn't have control of his actions, except when those series of words were said in a certain order. He could've plugged his ears and made loud noises to drown out what was being said, but that's an issue of intelligence, not immorality. Then again, maybe he was too horrified and overwhelmed by what was happening that he wasn't thinking clearly.
    Sure, the people he killed are still dead, but he had no more choice in doing what he did than Hawkeye did when he was under Loki's mind control. Go after those who turned him into a weapon.
    They're the responsible ones. General Ross refused to follow due process, telling people to kill him when they see him after supposedly planting and setting off a bomb. He should've been arrested and given a lawyer because even those who are accused have rights. Sure, they could defend themselves if he fought back, but killing him on site was wrong. They even had documented evidence from the information leaks that Natasha put online about Hydra and SHIELD. Cap even asked for a lawyer after he and Sam were arrested for protecting Bucky, but General Ross wouldn't let him have one. When Ross found out about how Zemo had manipulated Bucky, he didn't care.
