I've been using Palomino Blackwing for years now and it's one of my favorite pencils to use in sketching. Initially, I bought it out of curiosity because I saw another youtuber use it. I thought it looks elegant and the eraser was quite intriguing. It's a bit expensive, but I love how smooth and dark the lines turn out. I was quite heavy-handed before discovering them, so I made adjustments with the way I sketch so that it doesn't wear out easily.
I was just thinking of buying some of these. Your videos are always my favourite way to decide about products new to me, because you're thorough, honest - most of all, I always end up feeling exactly the same as your assessments. Thanks for all you do! 😊
I don’t use the shitty erasers, and I’m not sure how the pencil would even last long enough to need a replacement. The only plus I guess is they extend the length a bit but I’d rather if they just dropped the erasers entirely.
@@eltenientemalasombra if you rub your eraser on carpet, it will be good as new 🤷🏾 works with charcoal too! Just make sure you don't like that carpet if you use charcoal 😂😬
There really is only one Blackwing pencil, and that is the original 602 which was discontinued years ago. I still have several, I cherish them, and have bought some of the new 602s and the new "black" Blackwing pencils, and the new 602 really is a different pencil. Although cosmetically it certainly does look the same, & the fine Cedar wood is wonderful. However, at least for the originals, the legend on the back "half the pressure, twice the speed," really is truth. They glided across the page, offered fine line variation, good shading, and really made for fast drawing. I frankly find the "black" black wing to be too greasy, (though less shiny then an old reliable Ebony), and I can't even bring myself to play with the Pearl. I can't fault someone for commercially trying to bring back a venerable old brand, but for those of us who have sampled perfection, the new one just doesn't compare. (& yeah, I primarily use both 2mm & .7 machanicals these days, but the extendible/replaceable erasers on the Blackwings still add to their uniqueness.)
I have an E.F. Blackwing 602, as well as the Palomino variant. I personally like the original black color on the 602, but the gunmetal color and lacquer are very nice on the new ones. In terms of the graphite, I cannot feel enough of a difference between them to really care. The old one is so very minutely more textured, I feel it on the paper more that the Palomino version. Honestly, I believe that a Blackwing 602 is a Blackwing 602. Palomino are also doing more with their following, with funding for art and music schools, and showcasing artists who use the pencils. Their limited edition ideas can be cool as well.
Jacob Schouten have you tried their yearly subscription? I love that I can try different pencils and it has a history lesson with it as well and every quarter I can’t wait to see what I am going to get.
Teoh,...I have used all of those pencils extensively and I'm so glad that you conducted this very fair review. Personally I have always felt the Blackwing's to be way overrated. They are a nice pencil, don't get me wrong, but they do not hold a candle to the Mitsubishi line of professional pencils! It's always good to buy one of each and try them for yourselves since tastes and preferences vary, but if I'm going strictly for quality and perfomance, I'm going Mitsubishi all the way!
@Yasmine S. Sure,..if that is a key thing for you then absolutely. No right or wrong here as I said everyone's needs and preferences will vary. In my opinion and based on the line that gets laid down on paper, it's hard to beat a buttery smooth Mitsubishi Pencil.
I've been using a wide range of Blackwing pencils for over five years (including the special edition "Volumes" options which they issue four times a year to subscribers). These are the best pencils I have ever used. The graphite recipe used by Blackwing seems to produce a blacker but harder point that lasts somewhat longer compared to other makes. The quality of the cedar casing is also superior, being remarkably consistent from batch to batch and somewhat better for quality sharpening compared to other brands. These pencils sharpen well whatever your method: I have used knives, standard sharpeners, long-point sharpeners, two-stage sharpeners, a manually operated rotary sharpener and a battery-powered one. If you can find the Volumes issues, you will find a range of blackness/hardness from Extra Firm, Firm, Balanced and Soft. The standard issue pencils which we see in the review do not include the hardest option of Extra Firm, which is still pretty black ... more like a B in most brands.
I use the uni and blackwing. However the addition of the eraser on the blackwing is the deciding factor for me. All the tools are in one place. I don't erase often but having it there means it's the one I go to.
I've been using the Mitsubishi 9850 HB as my daily driver pencils for a while now. I use the Hi Uni 2B, 4B, and 8B for art. I'm probably going to try some 602's at some point just to see if I like them. It's kind of hard to consider them a real waste of money for me I guess because at the end of the day it's still ~$30 for many hours of pencil use and there are way bigger money sinks out there that are encountered on a daily basis that are more reasonable to cut first to save some money.
Bethany Graham there’s a lot of history to them, look it up it’s pretty interesting. I did a few years ago and that was what made me give them a try. Love them.
@M de Boer I guess it depends where you live as for cost, the BW 602 is better than the mono for me. I don’t care about packaging either since it is only eye candy and serves no other purpose. I agree with your complete review of the Blackwing pencil line but, maybe you've been fooled by geographic price differences. In North America we don't see the price difference you suggest. From Jet Pens the Blackwings cost $22/dz while the Mitsi Hi-Uni pencils cost $26/dz. The best thing about the Hi-Unis is that they don't have that huge eraser on the end (grin).
Right?! I’m on a yearly subscription with Blackwing and I love it! I get all kinds of new pencils with a storyline and a history lesson. It’s really fun. Plus I love Blackwing pencils.
The wood pencils are more for drawing. You would tilt the lead sideways and use it for shading and wide strokes. You can't do that with a mechanical, which is better for writing.
If you like loose sketching try that 2b lead on a .9 mechanical pencil its just slightly thicker so shading is easier to make smoother but still keeps a thin enough point to get details
Totally agree, the black Palomino feels like a 4B. Very good pencil but not worth the price. My personal favourites are the mars Lumograph and Faber Castell 9000's. The Mistubishi ones are excellent too :)
Your basic knowledge is wrong. You don't copy other people in the public gallery. You follow engineering principles and make the most out of your efforts and outlay. Manufacturers sharpen pencils. You DON'T sharpen pencils. You wear away the lead. Everything in this video is wrong.
Those other brands design pencils ✏️ totally different to blackwing pencils. Blackwing is concerned with WHAT HAPPENS TO THE LEAD as you're drawing. Other pencils are designed for something else. They can be designed with PRESERVATION in mind. Etc...
This is so useful, thank you. I use cretacolor fine art pencils. I’ve been wondering how they compared with the blackwings, and I’m glad to see they hold their own :).

Still a bit more videos left to go through on your channel lucky me! ;-). Have a great day and thanks as always.
The 602 is actually the "original" one. It's a remake of the blackwing 602 that was discontinued many years ago. The vintage blackwing 602s, if you can find one, can go for a ton of money on ebay.
Great review and sound conclusion. Agree with your recommendations. Tried all three and several limited editions as well, and they are certainly enjoyable pencils and a nice treat for graphite artists. Still the Mitsubishi Hi-Uni remain a top choice and better value for frequently used drawing tools.
Someone gifted me these pencils and I didn’t know what I had until now. I figured out that they were sketch pencils but didn’t know they were such high quality. I will put them to good use on my new sketching journey.
The eraser makes the Blackwing very unbalanced for sketching. I remove the eraser and metal sleeve when I sketch to better balance the pencil. Castell 9000's (Made in Germany, not the Made in Indonesia, which use inferior wood slats and varnishes) are still by far my favourite...they keep their point forever in the harder grades. The FC Goldfaber is a second or third line FC which is not representative of the premium Faber-Castell pencils. BTW, your videos are top quality.
I think I'd go with the Mitsubishi Hi Uni 4B pencils. That looks great to me. 👍 😄 Thanks for the comparison. Really showed off the quality of these pencils nicely. Have you Teoh or anyone else erasable colored pencils or mechanical pencils with erasable colored lead to differentiate foreground objects from background objects when doing the lines of an urban/plein air sketch? As long as one uses light pressure the color can completely erased. I've thought of using erasable mechanical pencils, blue for foreground and red for background.
Well, it's March 2021, and now there is a later Black Wing 602 that no longer says Palomino on it. I understand some reviewers comparing it to the old original first 602 cannot tell the difference. How about a review of this newest 602?
In Germany they are much more expensive! But for me they are worth it. I love especially the the Palomino Blackwing, Matte. And of course it´s not "only" that they are wonderful to draw with ;-) I also love their design. And the erasers are really good and stay good for years. I really love graphite pencils and have a lot of them, different brands, love the japanese like Mitsubishi and Tombow most. But Blackwing are my favorite ones!
I had been using the first original black wing 602 since the 1970s. It was a pencil of choice by all composers including Leonard Bernstein Stephen Sondheim Percy Grainger Marvin Hamlisch etc. it became discontinued early in the 1990s. Had I known that I would’ve purchased many more boxes and present I have three boxes of 12 each of the old original Blackwing 602 pencils. Before the development of the new black wing pencils those 602 pencils were selling for $40 each on eBay. I was very excited when black wing came out and find the original black painted black wing pencil to be the closest to the black wing 602 original. However was very disappointed they didn’t make it the gunmetal gray color of the new black wing 602. The Palomino brand tries to pass off the new 602 as the original 602 which is not the case. The closest to the original 602 would be the plain black colored black wing pencil. That pencil has become exceedingly important in the pencil of choice for musicians to mark their scores. When I compare one of my very old 602s to any black wing pencil it still doesn’t quite measure up. There’s a fluidity in the original 602s that’s quite unmatched by any pencil, anyone that I let write with a pencil says the same thing it’s such an interesting comforting feeling.
Leodoz : Castell 9000 for me too...they keep their point forever in the harder grades. Stick to the German made ones though...the Made in Indonesia 9000's use the same graphite cores but significantly inferior wood slats and varnishes.
It's wrong information. You don't sharpen pencils. You wear away the lead. You cut away some of the timber to reveal more lead. You NEVER cut away lead. You never sharpen lead. You wear away all the lead. You never wear the lead on the side.
Great video as always... I do notice however, that the blackwing pencils would not work in a pencil extender due to the eraser and its ferule shape . This is a minor nuisance though ..Thank you.
Hey,..let me also say that I happened to buy a Jumbo Ticonderoga (targeted at kids) and THAT pencil was incredible! Used it to write items on the grocery list and that thing wrote nice and dark and crisp. Loved that pencil and the jumbo girth was a bonus!!
I don't use a Palomino Blackwing. Is not the most expensive pencil on market. The grade pencils scale start from 9H-H,F,HB, B-9B what are the grades of these graphite pencils?
Just drawing boats with different graphite pencils doesn't show you anything about the pencil. It's when you start using the stump and eraser to shape the forms into a real deal pencil drawing that the palomino comes into its own. In other words, push those drawings a bit further and then you'll see the difference.
Hi Teoh, I’ve been watching your videos for sometime now and find them the most informative for my style of drawing with pencils and ink on TH-cam. I wonder if you have plans to make a tutorial about drawing faces? I find this so difficult. I can only draw them if I copy your sketches! Not from life. Keep up the great work. Francis Holt from UK.
Trick to drawing faces is in observation. You've got to really focus. When you're drawing, ask yourself what angles you're looking at, where this facial feature is compared to other features? It's all about observation really. Go to a place where there are lots of people and practice drawing from life. There's a lot to drawing faces and people. You may want to check out this book. www.parkablogs.com/content/book-review-sketching-people-urban-sketchers-manual-drawing-figures-and-faces
Lol, you can say whatever you want. 😏 This demonstration shows me and my own eyes quite convincingly that the Blackwing pencils are indeed "significantly" better. And thus worth the money. Because when doing some things in life, time and effort happens to be much more valuable than insignificant economical savings. So why would you settle for "significantly" less, permeating through all that time and effort you spend, and through all the experience, joy and satisfaction that you harvest? Unless you're starving, the 'value' proposition is, in this case, an irrelevant delusion. I'm not saying that more expensive art material is always better. Not at all. I'm mostly inclined to the opposite, based entirely on what kind of results and developments I see people achieve with budget artist (note: budget *_artist_* , not hobby) materials. If you respect your materials too much, you're never going to evolve and achieve what you otherwise could. But in this case, the dollar that you save is IMO a waste of more valuable things.
These seem like same as the others except for the refillable eraser personally, I stopped using pencils for technical lead holders. Anyways good review
WRONG. Manufacturers sharpen pencils ✏️ You DON'T. Pencil Users DON'T sharpen pencils. You WEAR TINY FACETS ON THE TIP OF THE LEAD. The sharpener is actually a miniature hand plane that cuts only the timber away from the lead. You DO NOT use the sharpener to cut lead. It's designed to only cut wood. You wear away the lead. You never cut lead away. You never sharpen away lead.
They are great if you like to be taken for a ride on the gimmick I'm a sucker train. Otherwise any quality 4b graphite is just as good as the next. I mean a 4B ten for fifteen cents isn't going to be as smooth as a 4B for a dollar but the depth of here will be there same. So if you believe in your mind that pencil will improve your creativity then by all means, give up now lol
I just really want some of these because thet are made in Japan and they make really good stuff just look at my grandma during World War 2 she was a little girl and made bombs in a factory
No real point to save on it. Optimal value starts at 5dollars . Its not really advisable to save a couple of coins for a tool which is meant to last and be refillable .

That was my bigger gripe with them when I started using them, and then Blackwing made their own extender, which solved that problem nicely.
I have blackwing pearl
Teoh, the Blackwing 's sharpener also from KUM (in a black color) :) :)
I've been thinking about trying the Blackwing pencils. This was very helpful!
Hm, the links sadly didn't work for me.

what is the rupees
As of Dec. 25 2019 the Mistubishi pencils are going for $2 a pencil and the Palomino Blackwing Pencils are going for $25 before tax.
good review!
Thanks :-)
As far as I know, the Blackwing Palomino is the only pencil that has had a song written about it: th-cam.com/video/yEpxGGRCkX8/w-d-xo.html
Dude, there are eraser each at back of them. Why dont you use em?
Which pencil is ideal to do all the math that engineers do?
If you write a lot, a mechanical pencil is better since it doesn't require sharpening.
I rely on my trusty Ticonderoga
Hey,..let me also say that I happened to buy a Jumbo Ticonderoga (targeted at kids) and THAT pencil was incredible! Used it to write items on the grocery list and that thing wrote nice and dark and crisp. Loved that pencil and the jumbo girth was a bonus!!
@@ToddDolce ooh sounds intriguing!
Are goldfaber that bad? I've just bought one pack. Now I want blackwing
I don't use a Palomino Blackwing.
Is not the most expensive pencil on market.
The grade pencils scale start from 9H-H,F,HB, B-9B what are the grades of these graphite pencils?
Extra Firm, Firm, Balanced and Soft. They do not use conventional grading.
The blackwing pencil are the best pencil around the world ever! 😤
I heard made in Japan? What hope it's the Mitsubishi coz palomino is U.S. pencil
Thanks so much, I’ll take your advice and just stick at it! Thanks for the links that’ll be very useful. Regards and best wishes.
The high uni is easily as good as the black wing
So hard to get in uk 😕
I’m subscribed to the Blackwing Volumes. They come out every 3 months
Nice "Benchy"
These seem like same as the others except for the refillable eraser personally, I stopped using pencils for technical lead holders. Anyways good review
WRONG.
Manufacturers sharpen pencils ✏️
You DON'T.
Unintentional ASMR
So, just what makes these so expensive??? Are they made out of gold? WHY??????????
They are sprinkled with marketing gold dust
They are great if you like to be taken for a ride on the gimmick I'm a sucker train. Otherwise any quality 4b graphite is just as good as the next. I mean a 4B ten for fifteen cents isn't going to be as smooth as a 4B for a dollar but the depth of here will be there same. So if you believe in your mind that pencil will improve your creativity then by all means, give up now lol
I just really want some of these because thet are made in Japan and they make really good stuff just look at my grandma during World War 2 she was a little girl and made bombs in a factory
I just buy the cheapest mechanical pencil at the dollar store.
No real point to save on it. Optimal value starts at 5dollars . Its not really advisable to save a couple of coins for a tool which is meant to last and be refillable .
Sad
2x more expensive? No, 3x
2x better? No.
The "normal Blackwing" is called the Blackwing Matte. It's the softest. The Pearl is actually the hardest...ROTFLOL.
i cant afford it lol
Have you ever thought about making ASMR videos?
Nope
