Yeap, it looks like it’s been there for so long. Good thing they immediately remedied the problem before it goes up and eventually hurt the horse’s leg.
I have a helluva lot of respect for farriers. Just today it was a near thing between my cat and me who would go to the doctor (neither of us did, but we're now out of bactine and band-aids). If a horse suddenly decided it's not having it...
Don't know what it is. But, these are some of the most satisfying videos I've ever watched. Especially this one. The shoe, the crack sealer, the trimming... I don't know what it is but, farriers are amazing to me.
*I'm not sure what amazes me the most. The fact this popped in my recommendations for no appearent reason or the fact I watched it till the end. Fascinating*

Looks like you provided a good chance to heal and grow out. That's going to be a long process. Hope the owner keeps up your farrier skills and doesn't put off after seeing improvement. Thanks for sharing
@@zachkelly89 I don't know. I asked our farrier once and all he said was, 'I dunno, I just don't'. I mean seriously, I can't stand next to ANY animal without giving it a pet or air kisses.
I had a similar problem with one of my horses a couple of years ago and we did the following: 1. trimming at least every 6 weeks or so; 2. making kind of shallow cuts across the crack (the crack did not go all the way to the hoof coronet); 3. cleaning the crack and squeezing a cotton pad soaked in copper sulfate solution into it; 4. no horse shoe (the horse was bare-footed most of his life anyway). The crack started growing down; it took a few months but the problem disappeared and this particular hoof was in a very good shape for the rest of horse's life (7 or 8 years, as far as I remember).
These horses know that the humans make them feel better after all the fussing and knocking etc in their feet, they know its so that they will feel better or be better afterwards. Its nice to see that in an animal.
I’m curious as to why you left so much toe length, especially with such a crack? Is that to do with the shoe placement and having something to nail to?
Looks very good. From a city guy with little experience with horses other than riding a few. What is the purpose of burning the shoe onto the hoof? What does that do?
As well as what the other commenters said, the steel used on a horse like that is generally 20mm wide & 10mm thick, so trying to shape it accurately to a horses foot cold would be nearly impossible, but when the shoe is heated up in the gas or coal forge it makes the steel very malleable & soft & you can shape it easily to get the best fit. Shoe fit is very important & the horse has to live with the shoe that it gets for the next 6-8 weeks & if the shoe isn't fitting just right, it can cause lameness, arthritis from imbalances & inflammation
@@carpathianken Q: How many farriers have I seen in decades of keeping / owning horses which fit the hoof capsule to the shoe instead of fitting the shoe to the hoof capsule. A: Takes more than fingers and toes on both hands and both feet to count. Not in my stable! On my horses or any boarder's horse either!
What causes these true cracks? Is it for an injury or infection? I’m not a horse owner, nor am I sure why TH-cam sent me your videos but I really enjoy them and have recently subscribed to your channel.
Just asking . Do you think if the hoof was flater and not bow shaped that the hoof woodent split in the center . Pressure on the side walls of hoof . You know. Iam no holes person but I love watching this . Thanks
Hopefully the crack will be able to 'grow out' with appropriate care which includes regular attendance from the farrier with therapeutic trims and/or shoes. If left alone it will just get worse and worse.
Beautiful work. Grandpa used to do his horses. I was under 10 years so I only remember bits. Like the frog. What little kid isn't fascinated to find a frog under a horses foot. 😊 I was wondering, must a horse have all 4 feet in shoes? Or can it be only the damaged foot/feet?
My guess is generally, yes, but if there's a damaged hoof then they would make the rest as even or attempt to give a similar feeling to the horse in all four feet
It's fairly common to shoe only the front two feet if the horse isn't worked too much on hard ground, or on horses or ponies which have naturally good hard feet, but you'd never shoe only one or three feet! They need to be balanced, and if one foot is 'bad' they will have a special shoe on the bad foot - and a normal shoe, of the same height, on the foot on the other side.
This is how it should be done! I can’t stand those people who are very rough with it, the trick is to take your time and take care when doing it. How would people feel if the staff in a salon were that rough and pulling and yanking your foot left right and Center??
I live a urban life in one Asian country with nothing to do with horses. But I'm so so glad that algorithm brought me this channel, fascinating.

Very addicting watching you guys work on the hooves. The horses look like they enjoy the pedicure as well. 😁
Can you do a follow-up video to show what happens over time?👍👍👍
There is something so relaxing about watching your videos. The horses really seem to appreciate it as well
From the looks of the hoof, the Crack looks chronic.
The side clips are a good call.
Nice work.
Yes chronic. Thought so too.

Excellent work. Very clever to put the indentations either side of the crack to stop it continuing to split.

Great job hoof looks so much better
Such a pleasure to watch a skilled Farrier at work.
You did a beautiful job on that poor horse's hoof!! Really well done!!!
Over the years I have watched thouuuussannnds of shoeing videos. I have never seen a farrier pet a horse or go 'Aww gooboi buddy!'.
Why is that

Do you think setting the toe back a little more would reduce stress on crack?
This is how cloven hooves are made

What kind of sealant do you put in the crack, is it a type of silicone? I was also wondering what kind of hoof polish you use

Looks very good. From a city guy with little experience with horses other than riding a few. What is the purpose of burning the shoe onto the hoof? What does that do?
Helps to see where the shoe is going, is the hoof level, is the shoe the right size, is the hoof trimmed the right way.
It's the method to check shoe fit to the foot and check foot balance in all directions.
