I have been seeing quite a few comments (and steam reviews) from people saying they are not interested in this game because of the lengths at which the developers went to update the game in terms of political correctness. While I do believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I will say that I feel sad that this will keep you from enjoying a really great remaster of a classic game :(
Honestly I bought the game as preorder just because i love AoE III and the update to american civs was a welcome one. However, changing the opening cinematics from "Destined to Conquer" to "Destined for Adventure" made me cringe really hard... So I think both you and the haters have a point actually. The devs started with a great idea, to correct the wrong depictions of some civs, but went a bit too far "to not offend".
@@PotatoSmasher420 I agree I loved playing aoe 3 as a kid and the changes to be more representative of some of the factions it uses in the americas is good but if people really cared that much about small things like destined to conquer or the exploration age and commerce age they would have called for classic aoe 3 to be taken down or even more so now seeing aoe 3 has the spotlight as the 3rd remaster of the classic game trilogy
My ONLY complaint is when you're building your DECK, the cards aren't organized by "evolution trees" Even if you select "By Category" the cards still groups side-by-side. It makes it hard to find some cards and have a clearer idea of what those cards are meant to be
AoE2 is a supremely well done game, so complex and tightly balanced... But AoE3 simply has a special place in my heart. So much hours playing as the Japonese, Portuguese and Ottomans XD. And I'm already grinding for the achieviments in AoE3DE, maybe I need and intervention XDDD
I feel the same way. I understand why AoE 2 is much more popular with the competitive players, but personally I love the setting of AoE 3. It really has a special place in my heart. In fact it was the first game I ordered the collector's edition of.
I had a similar thing with AoE3 War Chiefs, it sparked this super deep interest into the Haudenosaunee and Indigenous history as a whole that persists to this day
Funnily enough, the Japanese campaign picks up right after Age of Empires 2's Korean mission, Battle of Noryang. So essentially you can play Age of Emipires 2; take over Japan as Hideyoshi, fight against him as Korea, then control the birth of the Tokugawa Shogunate with Age of Empires 3.
Please upload your playthrough of the japanese campaign. It would be really interesting to hear your insight of the game and story during the gameplay.
There is a overhal mod to age of empires 3 that make japan have shinsengumi, hatamoto samurai, some imperial soldiers and historically figures, but i can't remember the name. ( edit: Oh yes, "wars of liberty")
@@Tareltonlives I think that the Sengoku period belongs more to AOE2 than to 3. So I liked what WOL did to Japan. (I think WOL is more focused on the 19th century overall.)
You can use yabusame as anti artillery. Esp with the In-Yo Rush card, they are incredibly good against artillery. Pair them with Yumi’s, backed up by some morutaru and you have a game-winning build.
Get both Yumi cards, the 20% attack boost for yabusame card, in-yo rush, and daimyo cards. Half your vills on food, the other have on coin, shrines on wood.
Actually the game does have a form of revolution at the embasy building. If you chose Japanese isolation you have an option in the 4th age for the Meiji restoration wich advances you to age 5 and disables all wonder bonuses.(Apologies for butchering the names in this)
From memory, the Yabusame is kind of unique for a Dragoonish unit. The one thing I am sure of is that they are awesome at killing Artillery and in the old game they had a card that improved their Artillery multiplier. Oh, and Japan was my favorite civ. I will be getting a new gaming computer in a month or two and will be playing DE. I'm super excited!
Probably the reason why the game doesn't feature the Meiji restoration as a form a revolution available to Japan is that the timespan of the game does technically end just before this took place and a lot of the more modern weapons that Japan adopted during this period aren't even used by any of the other factions yet.
When do we get a nostalgia review for Battle Realms? It pushes the theme a little but I remember how people loved it despite being under the shadow of Starcraft and RA.
I came here because of the game. I'm staying here because of the channel. I'm not a person that was interested in Japanese warfare, but the way you present it makes it extremely interesting.
Great series. I recently got a lot into japanese history and these games will help me immerse in the times of the samurai :) you should make a video about Battle Realms. Not really a historical samurai game, but it features a lot of historical units in a japanese-style, magical fantasy world as a RTS game. I played this game a lot as a kid and it's even available on steam now. I would really appreciate a review about Battle Realms in your series, since it's one of my all time favorites and it's not well known despite its high quality gameplay. :)
I think the Yabusami Archer is like the Dragoon? I don't really know about how effective he is 'cause I don't play Japan. But his point is to counter heavy (generaly melee) Cav By the way, my absolute FAVORITE is the Chinese. Followed by Britain, Spain and the Aztecs!
Though not a Samurai game, anyone play Three Kingdoms: Fate of the dragon? It was my first introduction probably to any Asian history, was like AoE2 with an emphasis on sieging out and defending castles which were in its own separate gamespace while still being real time, never got a re-release not even on GoG unfortunately.
I think my favorite civ is India; the steady XP flow, the free villagers, and the wide range of units like Zamburak and War elephants make them a lot of fun This game has helped me a lot in my interest for the early modern period. I see Sohei and Udasi and Zapotecs and Ruyters and Abus guns and Rodeleros and Rajputs and Streltsy and it gets me interested.
Great vid. Thanks. Subscribed. That was a really good point that it would have been awesome if they had a Japanese Revolution option. And it goes with the Theme of the last game Age. FYI, the whole "Revolution Option" is pointing to the Revolutions of 1848. There were at least 5 European Revolutions that year, and of course, they all looked back to the French Revolution for their inspiration. I thought it was very cool of the game to find a spot for the American Revolution. Take Care. :)
My favourite factions in Age Of Empires 3 is probably British, Russians and Swedish. But I also hope they add some Southeast Asian countries like Vietnamese (Nguyen Dynasty), Aceh Sultanate, Filipino, Third Burmese Empire and importantly Johor Riau Sultanate (Malay)
It'd be nice if there was a feature that allowed not simply to build a generic castle/Shiro, but, instead, allowed you to design the castle/Shiro, like those different (4 main) layouts you showed in your castle/Shiro video. Layout, buildings, towers, floor-levels... kind of like with Shad of Shadiversity''s Honourguard castle layout ( th-cam.com/video/sJkXRDKdAcM/w-d-xo.html / th-cam.com/video/GklykpH4Hyo/w-d-xo.html ).
I hate that you don't unlock the cards shipments anymore. There now is no more incentive for leveling up. They could at least have added city customization for the non base game civs.
I am a little bit disappointed with that too. I love progression in games, but I understand it could hurt balancing in Multiplayer games if people are not around the same level.
I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on the Japanese in AoE 2 after this video. But, it sounds like you aren't as familiar with AoE 2 as you are with AoE 3, so I understand if you feel like you can't do a proper analysis.
Unfortunately the new one won't be out for another few weeks with the way my schedule is currently looking! But trust be as soon as I can get a chance I will have it out ASAP
I wish the Japanese voice acting was re-recored as the current Japanese that units speak sounds weird to me. I bought a disk version of AoE3 back in 2007 in Japan, in which the Japanese voice acting is different from that of ones sold on steam and sounded totally natural. I wonder why AoE3DE didn't use the better version of voice acting though it has already officially existed since 2007.
Only the European civs can do a Revolution, the Asian and Native ones cannot. BUUT there's not much to do there in terms of revolutions, revolutions, as a mechanic, are supposed to represent your COLONY rebelling against its parent nation. That didn't really happen with the Native or Asian civs in the game, they did have revolutions, but they were internal, not colonial territories breaking away from the parent state, OR they were revolutions against European powers, which is the whole point of the Indian campaign.
Yeah I bet the village elders consulted the cave drawings of buffalo in Utah, don't want to offend such a profound and culturally rich population that is the native Americans. You're right when they took away the "discovery" term, like discovering the wheel, gun powder, transatlantic navigation, medicine, uniform laws, written language, etc. Good to seem them stripped back to what they actually were. 10/10
I would have had Yari Ashigaru as the equivalent to everyone else's pikemen, but I think there was a fear of making the civilization overpowered given the Daimyo and Shrine mechanics.
Another WOKE developer changing colonization to commerce.. Lets not offend people what our history really was like and change it to rainbows and fluffy bunnies ;)
You shouldn't buy that rubbish around historical accuracy regarding Native Americans. They mined extensively and were much less likely to engage in monetary exchange. The 'consultant' just made up the objection to mining because he's a believer in the myth that Native Americans were some kind of ancient environmentalists.
