- In 2009, after unretiring from the NFL once again, Brett Favre joined the Minnesota Vikings. He led the them on a deep playoff run and with only seconds left on the clock against the New Orleans Saints, Favre had the victory at his fingertips. To understand how we got there, lets rewind.

Love how you never saw Favre lobby for flags after being hit. He was a tough bastard, I miss watching him play
L J Yes they pounded Favre during that game. It’s almost like the karma has haunted the Saints for a decade.
L J this game was so bad with the dirty hits that even though what you said was correct, the 1 exception was during this game which everybody forgot because it was flagged. It was the hit that almost killed him though. Not the high/low that wasn’t flagged and replayed a million times. On the wide handoff he went to sell the fake and got decleated after the play was over. After the game he said that was a dirty hit. He never said it again about that hit or any other hits but he said it that 1 time. And it was the worst 1 for sure
many qbs back then didnt because roughing the passer was rare
@Richard Head dude really
That's cuz almost all the hits where completely legal back then the game was really different that it is now
Favre's Vikings season is really underrated, all things considered.
His best statistical year ever and he had to be held down and beaten while the refs gave the game to a team of dirty cheats. That was our superbowl and now it's just a sham trophy.
@@ephemispriest8069 that also had to do with the ever changing rules going against the defense since the 90s. If illegal contact & defensive holding were enforced in the 90s Favres 3 MVP seasons in GB would have been other worldly.
@@ephemispriest8069 And those same Saints want to complain it was stolen from them. I call it justice.
@@ephemispriest8069 Enough with the "refs gave the game to the Saints". Yes there were bad calls but they were on both sides. And YES they ignored a few bad hits on Favre. There was one early in the game that was much worse than that very first play in the video: After a hand off he was drilled to the ground (and even de-cleated as John Madden would say) well after handing off and it was not called. The refs didn't take control early in the game like they're supposed to do, I'll concede that. But even with all of that the Vikings still outplayed the Saints and lost, not because of the bad refs, but because they beat themselves. I also give credit to Porter when he popped the ball out of Barrian's hand....Great defensive play. That interception that Favre threw was typical of him. As great as he was, he was also a coach's and team's nightmare. What made him great also cost his teams many wins.
Bullshit lol. The saints were gifted a Super Bowl because of Hurricane Katrina.
Haven’t even started the video yet but I already know this is gonna be painful to watch. I will never forget that horrific game.
TC 2882 lol same here
It wasn’t even like I was heartbroken or anything. I was just confused. I must’ve rewatched this game 10 times in its entirety on TH-cam since it happened and I still stare at the things that happened with the same faces I did that night. It was bananas. I don’t even have words for it. I’ve watched a great many sporting events in my life and I will never feel the same way about any of them as I did this one.
TC 2882 haven’t started yet either but I already know this will be fun to watch. I will never forget that awesome game
Who Dat
I was only five but I still cried of joy when we hit that field goal
I will never forget the Minnesota miracle i cried myself to sleep for a week... weve had some good games.
As a 40+ year old lifelong vikings fan I knew better than to trust them. All game I kept thinking they would blow it, especially will all the turnovers. On the final drive after they crossed midfield I finally thought to myself "oh my god they are going to make it to the super bowl". Then this happened.
"It's almost as if Gregg Williams was giving incentives to hurt the aging quarterback." When the news finally broke, this was the one game everybody immediately thought about. It's crazy how obvious it was.
Its obvious they were trying to hurt him. That high-low hit would be a penalty today. He took a serious beating in that game. But should have gotten better treatment from the refs. I watched that game and while i was never a serious Brett Farve fan i was really pulling for him in that game.
Ok,he had a chance to win the game ,he choked and threw that crucial interception,he could have ran out of bounds and kicked a field goal to win 🤷
@@christopherfava2529cope harder saints fan. Your one Super Bowl win is clouded in controversy from bountygate, and that’s why your team has been cursed since this season. Can’t even beat the Vikings in the playoffs anymore

@@tmlfan7785 A joke that doesn't even make sense. It's a really bad joke. I approve the OP comment.
Big oof
Maybe "retirement" isn't an option because they are too lazy to even get hired in the first place!
I remember crying after this game.. was ready to see the vikings finally win the big game
After this game, I told myself that I'm not even going to worry about the Vikings making it until they actually GET there. I'm tired of dealing with disappointment and failure year after year.
Yooooo what's up swift
we'll trade you rodgers. he won't throw a pick but he'll eat sacks
The Vikings have had a lot of NFC Championship heartache. The biggest punch in the gut was 1998 vs Atlanta.
@@jpmnky I think had the Vikings beaten the Falcons, Super Bowl 33 could’ve gone either way. But I am pretty confident they beat the Colts in Super Bowl 44
Brett Favre is an absolute legend. Very unfortunate what happened to him and the Vikings in this game.
Drew Brees better than Farve ever was.
@@bigrocca9606 ...no. he definitely should have retired by now but Bree's has been given more but somehow struggles to put it together
Favre is a mixed bag. For every great moment he's had, he's made a boneheaded interception.
If by " unfortunate " you mean throw a predictable game ending pick, yes.
He deserved it after what he did to my packers 😢
As a life long Packer fan and 11 yr Farve fan who broke my heart going to the Vikings however while watching this game and seeing how he played and by the games end he won back my respect for him. Watching the punishment he took and how he handled it especially later finding out about "bountygate" intentionally trying to injury him was both hard and awe inspiring, almost any other player today and not just a QB but any player even in their prime would more than likely not continue on after just 1 of the huge hits and he took several devastating hits that were clearly painful but even at his age he pushed thru and not only came back out but even returned and played at a high level. It was really special to see such determination a what it means to never giving up, this performance though transcended beyond just this game, that playoffs, season, this was like the culmination of his entire career almost as if this was the final 1,200th quarter of a single 12 yr long game. And even though it ended with him throwing the INT it didn't matter and even makes for a better ending to it all somehow, that even when you go so above and beyond any expectations sometimes it can still go wrong either by your own making or by something else out of your control. To me this game was a perfect example that demonstrated oftentimes its the journey and the destination that truly matters.
As a Vikings fan I keep seeing this recommended and I already watched it and it was PAINFUL enough TH-cam can you just let me BE!
That bomb to Greg Lewis against the 49ers... always will remember that great day
Knowing our luck if we took a knee and opted for a FG we probably wouldve missed it.
after the penalty it was considered outside longwell's range. If Favre hadn't taken all those hits he could have run for 5 yards though
I think Favre had 5 yards rushing total in his time with the Packers
true, especially considering our luck with field goal.
It would have been blocked and returned for a TD
like when blair walsh missed against the seahawks.
I’m an Eagles fan, so I can relate to and feel sympathy towards the Vikings. They’ve had so many great squads over the years, but something always stands in their way of getting to the big game. If Philly isn’t in the SB, I’d always like to see the Vikings make it.
I’m convinced they have Jon tied up in the basement
Adam S nah he's probably just writing some stupid article
KENZO productions the article is probably pretty good tho
KENZO productions your right and it’s been a while since I’ve read one but I feel like his personality comes out more in the videos
Brett Farve's First and Last NFL Passes were Interceptions. His First and Last Passes as a Packer we're also interceptions. Farve loved throwing so much he wanted to share that joy with every team.
Favre's career interception rate was 3.3%, only a few tenths higher than guys like Peyton, Young, Montana, Marino, etc... And he played his best years (you know, the three consecutive MVPs) when defenses were still allowed to play defense. But keep parroting that BS that fits your narrative.
Great video, awesomely put together and love the VHS effect. YOU GOTTA SHOW THAT BROKEN ANKLE THOUGH!
what broken ankle?
"THIS ISN"T DETROIT!"
This is the super bowl!
PA's call really sums it all up. #Sadface
This game was my true introduction to Vikings fandom. It got me prepared for the constant heartbreak that comes with rooting for this team. It prepared me to stand out in the -6 degree cold and watch Blair Walsh shank a 27 yard field goal, it prepared me to be in the stadium for the greatest play in Vikings history (Diggs, sideline, touchdown, unbelievable) only to go to Philly the next week and lose 38-7. Can’t wait to see how they manage to let me down next
Sit back and relax. It's going to happen pretty consistently.
It’s like being a titans fan. We feel your pain.
Idk if I’m welcome here but as a Saints fan we’re pretty much all in this together
One extra tidbit to add was how the Saints destroyed Kurt Warner and his career the week earlier
Through Bounty gate.

So many blown calls in this game against the Vikings
I'm not even a Vikings fan, but I think they deserve a super bowl more than any other franchise now. They've been through a lot of heartbreaks and their fans have suffered through it all but have stayed loyal. They will get there one day.

Between this play and 1998 it's so hard to be a Vikings fan. Then we have what happened this year, and it just feels like fate is against us. I will never not wonder how that 1998 Super Bowl would have gone if Gary Anderson had made that last field goal...

WE WOULD'VE WON THE SUPER BOWL IF IT WEREN'T FOR VONTEZ FREAKING BURFCEIT TAKING OUT AB AND BIG BEN

Please no. My soul died in 2011 and I don’t want to see Nelson not make that catch and Freese trot home 😭
Piero Sanchez I'm glad freese was good for one postseason😂
and then just like that after his retirement the NFL change the rules to further protect the quarter back.
Tod_Der_Reiter tom brady was the cause of that lmao
Just like after the 2009-10 season they changed OT rules where you couldn’t win with a FG...I’ve always thought they did that because that’s how the Saints went to the SB
Also changed the overtime rule immediately after this game.
The vikings, in this game, became the last team EVER to not get a chance with the ball after the other team kicks an opening drive field goal.
Do Patrick Kane's 2010 Stanley Cup winning goal. I feel like there is a lot you can do with this one, The Blackhawks run of failure turning into the end of a long championship drought. Not only that, you have the Flyers absurd run to the Stanley cup finals, not only that, but the fact that the Flyers got in the playoffs off a shootout win in game 82.
And came back from being down 0-3 against Boston
Unfortunately the Blackhawks Stanley Cup run to be forever tainted more than a decade later as a result of a 2021 sexual abuse investigation of the organization and the consequences of the investigation
This game, more than any other, tugged my heart strings in both directions. Favre grew up about a half hour from where I lived. I always loved watching him play. The coast reveres him, but so do they the Saints. As it was for me. Though I love my Saints and am eternally grateful they won, he didn't deserve to go out like that

I remember watching this game with my Dad - that many turn overs and theyre still in it at the end to win - against the eventual champs. We're 49ers out here in California but that last play utterly broke my heart. 12 men on the field to take them out of FG range (which Id forgotten about) and then a rookie mistake by favre in that moment, when he had his 1 receiver open right in front of him on the right to get back in range....guhhhhhh I remember wanting the old gunslinger to win one more.

This is the most heartbreaking loss in NFL history. Favre Blew it for his whole team. He could have ran for 4 yards and gave the kicker a chance. They were without a doubt the best team in the league. That pass will haunt him forever. He could have rode off into the sunset. Instead he forced the ball on a horrible decision, forgetting to factor in the gravity of the situation.

1998 is the one that always resonates with me. Randall Cunningham, Robert Smith, Cris Carter, Randy Moss, and Jake Reed backed up by Gary Anderson who made every field goal and extra point up until the one that mattered most...
The Super Bowl that season sucked ass, and I can't help but wonder what could have been if the Vikings had been there instead of the Falcons.
After learning about bountygate I am so happy the Saints have been cursed ever since playing in the super bowl and now Brees is on his way out after losing again. Farve deserved to be in that super bowl
When I saw 3rd and 15 at the start I was wondering why they weren’t kicking because I’ve been watching the CFL lots lately
And the only reason they needed 15 yards was because they had too many men on the field, presumably 12. LOL
Love the deep dive concept!
Favre threw a bad pass but was it the reason the Viks lost HELL NOO. favre played a great game while refs refused to blow the whistle on a lot of late hits. Ap fumbled I think three times and even with that the Viks were in position to win the game till Childress put 12 men in the field out of a time out which took them out of field goal range. Favre then tried to win the game with one throw and made a bad pass but it wasn't his fault.
Vbadger10 I still believe that if Favre didn’t play in the Super Bowl they would’ve beat the Colts with Tarvaris Jackson. That Vikings team matched up perfectly against the Colts that year and it would’ve been a blowout. Just wasn’t meant to be
The Iceberg if Viks made Super Bowl that year I think Favre would of played no way he wasn't gonna play

Though this video was well made the facts are not quite accurate. There were also questionable hits after the whistle. The "Bounty" was so severe after discovered that legal steps were being considered. Instead careersrs like Vilma were ended along with a season suspend of a head coach. This is ultimately the most underrated nfl game in history for fowl play. For a quarterback abused by the media from day one of not attending training camp Favres accomplishment has only been matched by Tom Brady's recent success's but than again Tom is backed with one of the greatest defensive mind genious's of all time.
Don't forget peyton manning lmao
supremesoldier354 When was Payton abused by the media on the same level as Brady and Favre? I think you missed the point.
Great qbs: Manning > Favre. QBs smeared by media: Favre & Brady > Manning.
(*edit: lmao)
Vilma's career was not ended. IN fact, his suspension was overturned because the independent review panel ruled that Goodell overstepped his power because he provided no actual evidence that the Saints intended to injure Favre on any of those hits.Vilma would go on to play until 2017. Also, Aaron Rodgers has matched Favre's accomplishments and there are many more QB's who have more. Finally, Favre was not abused by the media. Favre got one of the biggest free passes by the media in NFL history as every INT he threw was excused as "He was trying to make a play" or "he is just being a kid" Favre got more free passes from the media than Brady ever has.
@@chriskay1449 and the suspensions for a whole season by leaders i mean coaches of the game? They also looked into charges for the illegal bounty which encompasses behavior indicative of maiming a player. Again the "scheme" was to deactivate a player. The only reason why this was swept under the rug was because of Hurrican Katrina. Which to make a place suffer more to such choices but gregg williams + is trivial because it is a game in the end. But to say a player getting leniency to a guilty act while his leaders served sentences is baseless. They tainted their win and for anyone that follows football. And the legacies of great players like brees - payton.
@@noahnoah5239 Wrong on all counts. It wasn't swept under the rug. All the suspensions were overturned because Goodell couldn't prove any of his claims. It was impossible to prove there was any intent to injure by any player while on the field. Goodell just declared it so which was a clear abuse of his authority. The only reason Payton's suspension was not overturned was because he accepted his. He didn't fight his. Everyone else did. There is absolutely no evidence to prove anyone one of the players were trying to intentionally injure anyone. The only baseless thing here is your post.

TRUTH, brother. anyone whom watches football and realizes how the game has been transformed by rule changes knows Favre was the ULTIMATE QB, in ANY era.
Mr Potential By gunslinger, I meant someone who would throw the ball, (whether smart throw or not) to the receiver with 100% no fear of the throw. Sure Peyton is the better QB and was very particular with his passes but Favre would throw it anywhere and at any time.

gary cobiak The 2017 Vikings remind me of the 2015 Cubs so hopefully just like the 2016 Cubs the 2018 Vikings take that next step
Uh ... what bearing do the Cubs winning the World Series have on the Vikings winning the Super Bowl? In fact, what bearing does that have on any team's victory, in any sport?
@@kvernon1 Two cursed franchises, obviously.
WE LIKE SPORTS AND WE DONT CARE WHO KNOWS
Kofie Why? FROM SHOOTING HOOPS TO THE SUPER BOWL
Throw me the baseball....now toss me the pig skin....now feed me the rock....now give me the rock.
Football Football Football.

I really enjoy these rewind videos or whatever SB nation, the butt fumble analysis vid brought me here
I'm a Saints Fan. I get furious when anyone says we didn't deserve the ring we earned. We deserved the Super Bowl and this game, but what we did was awful. Though basically every other team in try NFL does it, we got caught. Sorry for Bountry Gate Vikings Fans. I'm not being sarcastic.
DO THE 2013 RED SOX
I BEG YOU
Saints cheated with bounty on Favre. Had to hurt an old man to win. Plus the Vikings kind of self destructed with fumbles. In overtime the game was practically given to the Saints with awful calls. THIS GAME STILL PAINS ME.
Well hey, Saints head coach Payton had to sit out an entire season because of this, which had never happened before, on no actual evidence.
@@mikespongili8254 Yeah, and the vikings fans can't really complain when they did the EXACT SAME THING. vikingswire.usatoday.com/2016/10/26/turns-out-the-vikings-also-had-a-bounty-program-when-brett-favre-was-qb/
Just remember, almost 10 years later, you got your revenge with the blown PI in the nfc championship.
vikinsg had 6 turnovers and lost by 3 in overtime, any other team would have lost by 3 scores this team, was awsome
@@thesecondcoming1151 In a year that Minn missed the playoffs, they will still take pride in our misfortune.
Surprised he didn’t mention that the Vikings got revenge with the miracle in Minnesota this year
“The Meaningless Miracle”😂😂
JPS 35 lol siants won the superbowl after this . Vikings got blown out after they won this year
It was nice, but it wasnt revenge. Revenge would be beating them in thier house, In the Championship, with the Refs on Saints payroll AGAIN, in a close game, prevailing late, and Winning SB. THAT, that dream, would be revenge...Me, Ill be happy just sweeping the Packers this yr.
Too soon for me to go back to this memory it still stings.
Loving these Deep Rewinds!
