The antenna under that plastic shroud is called a “Yagi” antenna. The plastic shroud is really not necessary. They are pretty easy to make if one likes to tinker with that sort of stuff. Used to be quite a few on eBay. I’ve made dozens of them. I quit using them cause I finally got a cell tower nearby. You are right - a poor connection to a cell tower will really eat up batteries and cause one to lose a lot of pics.
