As someone from New Orleans, I can confirm this is sadly true. A student from my school was on the football team and was shot and killed due to gang violence, he had already been shot 9 times in the past. They said he had a bright future ahead of him with his immense talent in football.

I love the band director. He knows how to reach these kids. I live in Knoxville & a few years ago at one of the high schools in a predominantly black area the gang problem got really, really bad and in one year I think like 6 teenagers who were either current or former student got shot and most of them died in shootings related to gangs. After that, the community came together & even more money was put in their music programs. They have a west african drum ensemble that did a event called "drums up, guns down." And from what I've heard it's helped changed these kids' lives.

It's so easy to forget what hurricane Katrina did to New Orleans. I was just a young kid and not even in the US, but I remember my school even did a fundraiser for them just cuz it was so obvious that the US gov didn't give a f*ck about sh*t down there.

I honestly have the most respect for the business owners. They are going to be building the foundation for others to follow.

I’m born and raised in New Orleans, and I can tell you first hand. This is probably one of the only videos like this where I see no exaggeration. New Orleans was always bad, but after Katrina everyone had to move into neighborhoods they wouldn’t even think of stepping foot into prior to Katrina. It caused chaos. People now had to live next door to dudes they were shooting at just months before. People from different projects (certain projects don’t get along with other projects) now had to be right across the street from one another. Made shooting one of your “enemies” allot easier.
What help has the government offered to end this.menace?

What's unique about Tyler's videos is that they actually show hope. In the news all they show is the death, drugs, violence etc. But at the end there, seeing a school that supports the children and their education really made me more hopeful for the future.

I was born and raised in New Orleans East, back in the day in the 70s and 80s it was a popping place. You had the plaza mall and all sorts of places to eat and shop with all the business they had but now its all gone. What was already declining before Katrina hit, Katrina put the nail in the coffin. The plaza mall was torn down and all those shopping centers were all torn down, nothing left but concrete from the parking lots to let You know that anything was there at some point in time. It really breaks My heart to see all the places I visited and hung out at is all gone and is just a memory.
Actually being from New Orleans and living in New Orleans I can say for a fact it is a wicked city but it’s also a beautiful city with big potential and I’m appreciative of you for being able to highlight that!!

I live in a small village in Indonesia, where everyone looks after each other and lives with nature. In the past few months I have watched several documentary videos from this channel and it feels very scary because there is a lifestyle like this out there, even children carry things they shouldn't carry, drugs and weapons.
I hope the kids and teenagers there don't fall into the same hole and change the community there for the better in the future.

The whole city is broken from the Hurricanes.
Tax dollars went way down, so a bunch of budget cuts.
Cops get some of the lowest salaries in the country, so they are susceptible to bribery due to any above average person applying at other departments for more money, so they get the bottom of the barrel.
The housing is pretty "affordable" compared to other cities that size, but that's because they're all broken down. And then the good houses are borderline gated communities if they aren't in one already because they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on armed security and HOA's have to provide basic city services.

That fact that people still have hope is inspiring. The city's population was literally cut in half after Katrina. I dont think any disaster in modern times in the U.S. has had an effect on such a large city like that. Obviously there is a lot more to do, but the fact that people have hope and want to make things better is incredible after such loss.

I grew up in New Orleans, and I came from a lower class upbringing. I got my first job when I was 14 and went from there. One of the silver lining in New Orleans is that if you're honest and hard working, you can excel quite easily because there is so little competition! If you want a job, go find one, work hard, save your money, you can build a good life like I did. It's only your own mental defeatism and pessimism that keeps you poor and destitute if you're not even trying to make an honest living.
After 30 years, I left the city of New Orleans. My wife and I have a house we own in a small rural town and a baby on the way. No regrets, it is sad to see New Orleans, the city I grew up in, a city I still love and have many friends and family in going downhill like this, but my advice to my loved ones is and has been to leave, it is a sinking ship that is only getting worse.
The narrative that Katrina is the cause for the desolation of New Orleans is laughable. Of course it's true that the city was devastated, my Dad's house flooded, but if you look at a smart, culturally city like Hiroshima or Nagasaki, they were largely rebuilt into clean, function cities roughly 7 years after being bombed with nukes. New Orleans has had almost 20 years at this point, it's clear that something else is going on. The city is rotten and unhealthy, culturally, socially, politically, and that is why it has not, and probably never will fully heal from Katrina, blaming that on Katrina is missing the point.
Side note, I lived uptown right next Chicken and Watermelon, they head GREAT fried Okra, fresh watermelon juice (obviously) and a really funny painting of Obama playing pool with JayZ and Lil Wayne.
I agree with Katrina not being the main cause but being an honest hard working person does not mean you’ll excel, statistically speaking of course.

This is wild, bc I'm literally born and raised in NOLA. Lived there (except when I went away to college and when I briefly lived in Atlanta and NYC), and this couldn't be farther from my experience. I moved to Dallas a couple years ago, though.
Never really saw any of the crime myself (it was kinda like background noise on the news that I could basically ignore), went to a top school, always felt safe walking around to the places I wanted to go. As a teen, the most "crime" I got into would be more considered pranks by today's standards (like we "broke into" Hagen Daas after hours and stole a tub of ice cream lol).
But post-college, I made a friend who grew up literally a few blocks over from where I lived and her experience is more in line with this video. She had been shot several times, was trafficked as a child, had to do sex work to survive, and recently died of an OD. I couldn't believe all this was going on within a few blocks from me!
It's like we lived in parallel universes.
And before anyone asks 😒, I'm black, but my friend, Nicole (R.I.P.) was white.
I'm in the process of adopting her daughter, since she has no other family. I want her to have a life like I had.
NOLA is truly a tale of two cities.
And for any New Orleanians in the comments who might wanna check my bona fides: I lived in Pontchartrain Park and Lake Terrace/Lake Oaks until college (nothing but fond memories... It was like growing up in Mayberry lol), and when I came back from college lived in Lakeview/Filmore then Broadmoor/Irish Channel/Garden District til I moved to Texas.

My son and a couple of his friends went down to NOLA,a few years ago to see marti gras. He told me it was the most racist,violent place he’d ever been to.
The cops don’t care about nothing.
There were 2 shootings during the marti Gras parade on bourbon!!! My son said Bourbon street has its own smell, and he will never forget it!!Unfortunately,my son and his friends were IV drug users,and NOLA is prime for heroin. But,They all were robbed,lost their wallets, phones,their bikes.
Thank the gods my son woke up and decided to come home.

We did get him on the greyhound.
3 days to get home.
The best thing that happened from that as he got sober.
He went into rehab,and has been sober for 3 years. I’m so proud of him,and very happy he’s here with me!

In the given conditions, business is powerless, since it satisfies only effective demand (and as I wrote above, these people are able to pay for such services), then only the state can solve this problem, but for it this issue is not a priority or significant.

I’ve said it for years, this is how they dumb down society, and the more ignorant your citizens, the easier it is to control them. I’m 57 years old and when I was in school, the classes we could take were endless. Focusing only on reading, writing and arithmetic, has not only made school abundantly boring, it narrows the opportunities children have. Children need to be engaged.
This is truly so sad and tragic. However not all of New Orleans is like this. There are some wonderful and very safe areas.
So glad you covered hurricane Katrina. I still remember watching the footage in horror at the things these poor people endured. That lasts a lifetime. Glad there are some that are giving the future hope.

It’s honestly somewhat of both, the government doesn’t give a squat about the people and the people reciprocate that and view themselves as only hoodlums, and then the government cares even less about them or their well being. Katrina just showed how little the New Orleans government cared for the well-being of the people, they didn’t evacuate or anything until it was too late.

I lived in cities (Philadelphia) I’ve lived in smaller towns, I’ve lived in the middle of nowhere. I will never forget how different each of these lifestyles can be. I really wish sometimes I could show people who live in high crime zones how peaceful it can be when your nearest neighbor is 4 miles away. If you can, parents need to get their kids far away from this situation.

its the lack of resources and increased cost of living ouside the city that will keep people out of small towns. I've also lived in all 3 areas and will choose the big city every time. the small towns i lived in had higher crime than living in detroit metro.
@@up-uw4op I’m not sure what lack of resources you’re referring to but we have everything available to us within driving distance, and in a small town, walking distance. The cost of living outside of a city is far cheaper, I mean rentals popping off at about 700 a month, whereas you go 30 minutes south to the city it’s 1200 a month for the same living style.
@@Wetdoor in Wisconsin and Michigan the small towns had no daycare available for parents to work. The groceries were very expensive and so was gas to drive long distance. No extracurricular activities for kids unless you were able to drive an hour one way. Not everyone can handle the loneliness either if they have no family or friends in the area and no one to rely on in emergencies. People had the same hood mentality in each place Ive lived.
I see your reasoning but as a Canadian, the problem isn’t cities, it’s the governmental support systems and laws. There are cities with lower crime rates than certain small towns in the world - it really depends on how poverty is alleviated and the regulation of weapons. When a population is placed under desperate circumstances, they will resort to crime.

In it it reads that at around 1:50 am, the suspect Joshua Adams was pulled over for “driving with what appeared to be an altered temporary license plate.” Police removed the suspect from the vehicle for officer safety after the saw him chewing on a white powdery substance they believed to be cocaine. The suspect was then arrested for an outstanding attachment and obstructing justice by appearing to swallow cocaine. For medical reasons, police supervisor asked Adams what he had swallowed and noticed he was still chewing on the substance. The officers attempted to have the suspect spit the substance out, but police say he began spitting blood and became unresponsive. Adams was then transported to the Ochsner hospital where he died. Police say testing at the hospital revealed cocaine and marijuana in his system. A background check showed that he had a previous charge for cocaine 7 years prior to the incident.
So via this article it appears that this case is far from police brutality, and instead that his brother-in-law was on cocaine and died via complications.
my heart broke when I heard that mans story about his brother and law...trying to take care of his wife in her most vulnerable moment but ended up losing his life over senseless violence. he could have had the opportunity to break the cycle and be a presence in his sons life but he didnt even get to meet his baby 💔 rest in power 🕊

I’m so glad Tyler finally visited my home of New Orleans and shed light and this sad reality of the city. The crime was already rising in the 90’s but Katrina was kinda like that extra push that resulted in the violence that the city experiences today. I also feel like Tyler should had showed how close the nicer and more beautiful parts of the city are close to the more Lower income parts of the city.

There were no hurricanes in Chicago, or Memphis, or Philly, or Baltimore, or Detroit, or St Louis, or Atlanta, or Jacksonville, or DC, or a hundred other US cities I could mention, yet all those places have the exact same problems. I remember New Orleans back in the Cash Money/No Limit era, and it was a lawless ghetto war zone with the Nolia, Calliope, Melphy, Desire, St Thomas, and countless other projects that made Juarez Mexico seem like Wonderland by comparison.
Stop making excuses, crime was horrible in NOLA decades before the hurricane happened.
What's sad is Katrina brought a lot of crime to other states. I know crime went up big time in my state after we got a lot of refugees from Katrina. Our own people are our own worst enemy. We need to stop the cycle at home.

My Father is an officer and former homicide detective in New Orleans, and has seen so much more death and evil in his years of work than many will in their lives. Children shot dead in the streets; more disemboweled bodies then a person should be able to handle. I have pictures of new orleans in the 1920s-1950s from my great grandmother and I grew up on the stories of how it used to be. And let me tell ya- that's the city I love. My whole life my family refers to new orleans as the jungle. We only go if God forbid we need childrens hospital.

A good buddy of mine from high school was murdered in a robbery last year. It shattered everyone that knew him.

I listen to that man Complain about black people using the n-word more times than I could count for 2 hours at a funeral. 5 months before that I was at a party under I-10 being the only white person there and had a mother f****** blast. The old people that racistly blame the most disenfranchised of their community are disgusting, backwards, ignorant and the problem.
