Agreed! Was also mind blown by how he wiped the exterior roof of the car and added anti rust. But at this point I still thought this car was headed to the junkjurd. Luckyliy he wiped of the interior with fluid that smells eucalyptus. Now I can rest assured this car won't be heading to the junkjurd! And this is even while the car drove of in parked. Crazy indeed!
That's a sweet car! Over here in the U.S., I believe these were called Mirage (which I thought was fitting since these look like Evolution I - III but were economical vehicles instead). These Mirages are rare nowadays and would be considered 'Radwood' cool!
We had both the hatchback and coupe of these, though the hatchback was the Mirage and the coupe was the Lancer here, same with the generation after this one, by the 2000's the Lancer we got was the same as the rest of the world. I have no idea why Mitsubishi decided to do that for the Aus market but that's what they did
I still maintain this kind of car back here in Malaysia (it is called Proton Wira). Those rusts on the roof are sure to come back. I had to change the whole roof plate.
Glad to see you upload more car content, mate! This generation of Lancer is one of my favorites, and in Malaysia the one featured in your video is known as the Proton Putra. There’s another version called the Wira which is also a Lancer from this generation but it’s the 4 door sedan version and it has the license plate in between the taillights (you can also get it in hatchback form known as “aeroback”). These are really nice beater cars if you manage to find one in good electromechanical condition and a good price!
Yeah probably one of the underrated car that Proton ever made and now people are trying to get one just for tuning purposes due to the engine. And I heard it even has aftermarket seat and steering wheel from the factory which is cool for mid 90s Proton.

I believe in Malaysia, our car company Proton, rebadged that thing to Proton Putra. They also took the Lancer from Mitsubishi I believe and made the Proton Wira. I think the first gen Proton Saga is related to the Lancer aswell.

There was never "Evo III" in Proton's...Its all from a base model Lancer that's why its FWD...I hate when people just ignore the Lancer and called everything an "EVO" just like how people called every Skyline a "GT-R"
My first car was a manual 1999 Mitsubishi Galant. It had airbags (Even side airbags!) and was generally pretty safe car for it's time. It had pretty low kms when i got it, about 180k kms. It had the 2.0l petrol engine (4g63) which was pretty powerful but drank alot of fuel. The car became a moneypit pretty fast as the gearbox literally exploded didn't help at all that i abused it alot. We fixed the gearbox but the rust became too bad for us to handle so i sold it. The gearbox repair was almost as much as the car was worth (1k euros) but i'm happy to say it has been sold to a car enthusiast who has fixed it and is back on the road once again. Great video btw, i love how you have evolved from making computer videos to now making videos of computers and cars. Keep up the good work!

I learnt to drive in a Proton Satria which is basically the Malaysian built version of this car but the Mirage hatch that never got sold in Australia. Great little cars.
I have a 2002 mitsubishi lancer GLX with 1.6 engine and CVT transmission, with 22 years since I bought it from mitsubishi dealer and stills work great with the correct maintenaince described on the users manual. (My native languaje is spanish so excuse me if I have some gramatical mistakes). Great video!
Here in the Philippines, the Lancer GLXi is the top of the line version which is the all-powered trim. Regardless of the variant, all four trims of Lancer have AC from the factory. Unfortunately, Lancers here have only the 4G92 engine for the GLXi variant which is a 1.6 liter. The 1.8 liter 4G93 engine was only used in the Lancer GSR 2-door coupe.

my dad used to have a 1997 Mitsubishi Super Lancer Sedan/Saloon, which was a model based on the older-gen Lancer (same one as yours) but was given the Super badging because Colmobil (the Mitsubishi importer in Israel) had to rid of them for the newer-gen Lancers and Colts, my dad's Super Lancer was also a GLXi trim, with automatic windows, 5-speed manual transmission, but weirdly enough, his car had "fingers" to lock the doors which he could push or pull from his door to lock or unlock all the doors. I miss it very much, perhaps I'll get something similar to his older car, as he now drives a 2010 Lancer he traded in the Super Lancer for. after finding a document on the Ministry of Transport website, turns out that the Super Lancer was taken off the road at the end of 2016. RIP lil fella, hopefully, you're in a better place now...
These were sold in the USA as the Mitsubishi Mirage. A friend of mine had one in high school. Pretty decent cars, but these are non-existent in most of the country. They all rusted away. Like most Asian cars before the 2010s, rust was a major issue.
One thing I guarantee that gem has never seen is the speedo pegged at 240 km/h. Mildly ambitious move there by Mitsu. I love these cars though. Cheap, reliable and with proper maintenance, will last forever.
In my country we have a car that is an exact similar to this, it costs around the same and sometimes a bit cheaper. Many owners heavily modded them. Its quite cool.
Not sure about this Mitsubishi’s but on a older 90s Honda you Do Not Need Change Timing Belt until 250,000 KMs - 350,000 KMs regardless of the age of the belt . I had one that’s had 333,000 KMs and changed it only as preventative maintenance but the belt looked like it would of lasted for years .
My first car was a 2005 Lancer and 9 years later I have just upgraded to the latest model I can get, a 2017 Lancer. Also, I'm from SA too and had to drive from Marion to Barmera to get it haha

The key barrel on the boot, probably better off using an epoxy glue instead of normal super glue. Epoxy glue is more resistant to weathering. Otherwise, fun video. =)
Timing belt, tires, clutch, exhaust, rust, that's the ones i'm looking at with 'bangernomics'. Transmission often doesn't have a dipstick so that doesn't work for every car :). A car like this is usually half the price in the Netherlands. But they usually don't come with a service history like this. If the roof is the only rust it's got, this may run for a very long time.
I just bought a base GL Today for half the price. No mags though and 182000kms. If I didn't by it, it was going to scrap. Drives well enough to, but no pwr steering. Unlike earlier cars, the do have side impact bars in the sides.
I had this same car. It was called the Mirage in US. It was the first new car I ever bought. I was 23. I put almost 300000 miles on it doing outside sales.
I have a 1995 mirage s coupe here in the states, no power steering, no ac, manual, manual everything, 1.5 liter, teeny tiny brakes, and no carpet or anything in the trunk. Perfect pizza delivery car

In Malaysia, we usually convert this into an Evo 3 front and sometimes cut the back and put an Evo rear to make it into a Evo 3 coupe

Mitsubishi lancer is to cars what Datson 1200 luxe was to car market 20 years before ... Low cost, reliable, works forever and very cost efective.

A car like this is usually half the price in the Netherlands. But they usually don't come with a service history like this. If the roof is the only rust it's got, this may run for a very long time.
I just bought a base GL Today for half the price. No mags though and 182000kms. If I didn't by it, it was going to scrap. Drives well enough to, but no pwr steering. Unlike earlier cars, the do have side impact bars in the sides.
