_In this quiet way the first fortnight of her visit soon passed away. Easter was approaching, and the week preceding it was to bring an addition to the family at Rosings, which in so small a circle must be important. Elizabeth had heard, soon after her arrival, that Mr. Darcy was expected there in the course of a few weeks; and though there were not many of her acquaintance whom she did not prefer, his coming would furnish one comparatively new to look at in their Rosings parties, and she might be amused in seeing how hopeless Miss Bingley’s designs on him were, by his behaviour to his cousin, for whom he was evidently destined by Lady Catherine, who talked of his coming with the greatest satisfaction, spoke of him in terms of the highest admiration, and seemed almost angry to find that he had already been frequently seen by Miss Lucas and herself._
_His arrival was soon known at the Parsonage; for Mr. Collins was walking the whole morning within view of the lodges opening into Hunsford Lane, in order to have the earliest assurance of it; and, after making his bow as the carriage turned into the park, hurried home with the great intelligence. On the following morning he hastened to Rosings to pay his respects. There were two nephews of Lady Catherine to require them, for Mr. Darcy had brought with him a Colonel Fitzwilliam, the younger son of his uncle, Lord --; and, to the great surprise of all the party, when Mr. Collins returned, the gentlemen accompanied him. Charlotte had seen them from her husband’s room, crossing the road, and immediately running into the other, told the girls what an honour they might expect, adding,-_
_“I may thank you, Eliza, for this piece of civility. Mr. Darcy would never have come so soon to wait upon me.”_
_Elizabeth had scarcely time to disclaim all right to the compliment before their approach was announced by the door-bell, and shortly afterwards the three gentlemen entered the room. Colonel Fitzwilliam, who led the way, was about thirty, not handsome, but in person and address most truly the gentleman. Mr. Darcy looked just as he had been used to look in Hertfordshire, paid his compliments, with his usual reserve, to Mrs. Collins; and whatever might be his feelings towards her friend, met her with every appearance of composure. Elizabeth merely courtesied to him, without saying a word._
_Colonel Fitzwilliam entered into conversation directly, with the readiness and ease of a well-bred man, and talked very pleasantly; but his cousin, after having addressed a slight observation on the house and garden to Mrs. Collins, sat for some time without speaking to anybody. At length, however, his civility was so far awakened as to inquire of Elizabeth after the health of her family. She answered him in the usual way; and, after a moment’s pause, added,-_
_“My eldest sister has been in town these three months. Have you never happened to see her there?”_
_She was perfectly sensible that he never had: but she wished to see whether he would betray any consciousness of what had passed between the Bingleys and Jane; and she thought he looked a little confused as he answered that he had never been so fortunate as to meet Miss Bennet. The subject was pursued no further, and the gentlemen soon afterwards went away._

I love how the implication here is that Darcy found out Elizabeth is visiting Rosings and staying nearby, so he decided to choose to go "visit" his aunt at this time. He also uses his cousin as a wingman to avoid suspicion, while Lizzie is entirely clueless of the affair until he proposes. Real smooth, Darcy.

True! And it's especially telling because he doesn't seem to actually enjoy his aunt's company all that much!

Amusing how the whole room goes quiet when Darcy walks over to speak to Elizabeth.

Does anyone else think Mr Darcy was a little jealous of the Colonel and Lizzie getting on so well?

In the next chapter, 31, on Col. Fitzwilliam, one phrase……..and Mrs. Collins’ friend he fancied very much.
If you remember the 1995 version when he sat by Lizzie at the pianoforte. And later he escorted her into the house when she said of a sudden headache after speaking with him. Perhaps she treated him as a friend while could corroborate some things, as to Bingley and Darcy , also knew about Georgiana, being a co-guardian (this was before the first proposal and letter Darcy wrote to Elizabeth.) They did not see each other afterward. His next scene was at the double wedding, and he was beside Georgiana.

No, Darcy slowly introduced his relatives to Elizabeth to get their approval. The final introduction being his sister. Everyone loved her and their approval only solidified his love for her. She was the one.

David Bamber effortlessly steals every scene with his genius, and never bettered, portrayal of Mr Collins.

His running down the lane is a great scene, but I thought he was even more hilarious during the piano at Rosings. He really is a scene stealer. In the background of the first conversation of the colonel and Lizzie, you see Mr. Collins speaking with such animation to Darcy, who completely ignores him while staring at Lizzie. Absolutely hilarious

He is a magnificent actor, and if he had been blessed with the looks of a leading man, would have been internationally acclaimed.
He plays this part excruciatingly well. I wish Jane Austen had been alive to enjoy her monster brought into horrifying reality

Lizzy and Colonel Fitzwilliam: Talking to each other.
The background: Mr. Darcy, staring at Lizzy and ignoring Mr. Collins, takes a moment to greet Charlotte, then continues staring at Lizzy again, while Mr. Collins keeps babbling. Maria’s just there watching them from the other side. This will never not be funny 😂

One of the many things that greatly separates this version from all the others…things are constantly going on in the background that are as amusing as what we enjoy in the foreground.

He would have made a great Mr Wickham - handsome and also amiable. Mr W in this series is not handsome enough and also nat affable enough.

Col Fitzwilliam is very good looking, has great hair, and perfect gentlemanly manners with a great personality. Honestly they made him very appealing in this story…much more so than the book would have you believe…a lot more appealing than Wickham, who even Mister Bennet saw through from the start. I love all of the attention they gave to the colonel in this edition. Excellent lines and delivery

Mr. Darcy is wise enough to keep the Bingley's well away from Lady Catherine. They may be rich, but they are still middle class as measured by the aristocracy. Hence he switches sidekicks and brings his cousin Col. Fitzwilliam as the amiable companion who might help him improve his relationship with Lizzy. Still, it was a bit of a disappointment. I would have *adored* seeing how Lady Catherine would have treated Caroline Bingley.
