    Hi Andrew. I apologise if you've already discussed this previously but what's your opinion on the whole 'blow drying damages your hair' discussion.
    Is it OK to be using dryer for a few mins every day?? Or will there be long term consequences

      Thank you! I have a friend with frizzy curly hair on my schedule for an upcoming video in a few weeks- basically going to do this same process as here but tweak it to show the difference between what reduces the frizz (heat) and what reduces the curl/wave (tension) and how to kind of dial in a personalized mix of smoothing and straightening.

    Have you tried flat wrap technique on longer hair? Probably like chin-length. If so, will the trick be slightly different than short hair?

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I actually blow dry all of my graduated bobs this way. The trick is to keep in mind to follow through to the ends of the hair, like if the front of the hair reaches the back of the head, get the heat and tension allll the way from the front to the back of the head, all the way to the end of the hair. I’ll typically work through the process in smaller sections, too. I thiiiink I have an older video flat wrapping mid length wavy hair

    Andrew, when would one use this method versus the flat wrapping technique you previously showed? Is one way better than the other? I guess this method would take a little less time it seems? Great vids as always!

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is sort of “diet flat wrap” the difference being that here I didn’t need to pull the hair into as many various directions to make it manageable, it was already a little more willing. But the same staples are there- pull it tight and flat with a brush until it’s smooth. What I’ve learned since doing my initial flat wrapping videos is that it’s way faster to rough dry (like in this video) before flat wrapping than it is to start from damp, and also that starting with looser bristles then working finer/tighter allows you to more easily dial in how smooth you want the hair to end up.

      But I’ve tried oribe and R&Co in the past and of course everything they make is amazing. I also used to really like Redken’s Pillow Proof blow dry primer but I believe it was discontinued. Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny serum does wonders for smoothing out heavily processed hair. I don’t have a ton of experience with a ton of products, I kind of find what works then stop looking until whatever works is discontinued or otherwise unavailable.

    Hey Andrew. Just recently found your channel, and I've bought a BaByliss from your recommendations haha.
    I do have a question though. How would you recommend finding a barber?
    It could be me not being able to ask for what I want properly, but the barbers I've been to in the past year just can't seem to get anywhere near what I'm looking for.
    At this point, I'm too afraid of going to some random guy with how long my hair is getting.

  • @slasheerr946

    Here's a question, What to do when you keep on blowdrying your hair and itstead of it becoming smooth and soft like in your video, mine becomes more freezy and starts to lay falt, looses volume? Am I blow drying for too long or I should blow dry even more to go past the freezy state? Some days my hair looks amazing and other days looks like frizzy and flat hair. Flat as in like, It doesn't have volume but its not completely laying flat like straight hair, somewhere in middle I would say, I know you can't see my hair but I think you might have an answer for this because of your knowledge about hair, amazing video as always!

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right that it is really hard to diagnose without seeing your hair, but generally speaking you might want to try more heat for longer, but less tension. The tension is what will make the hair straight/flat but the heat is what makes it smooth/shiny. You could also consider polishing most of the hair with high heat and low tension (just wiggle it around by hand and heat it until the frizz reduces) but save the areas you want volumized, then hit those areas with a denman brush or round brush to force in some volume and wave. If the frizz is gnarly you might find benefit from also using an oil (like Davines Oi Oil) or a blow dry primer (like Redken Pillow Proof spray) before blow drying

      @@andrewdoeshair Thanks for this tip. Just one last thing I had in my head that I wanted to ask, Have you ever considered making a video on how to get insane amounts of volume> What techniques to follow and what pre stylers and post stylers to achieve good if not insane volume.I think a video like that would be really informative and educational to a lot of people looking to create volume in their hair through different techniques. Yes, I have seen the video about volume without any tension on that one guy that you made video about but it didn't work for me, I guess different techniques work for different hair types and you probably know the most of them.
      In the end, thanks again for making this video and taking time out of your busy schedule to check and reply to comments. Thank you for all the videos you make about hair. I've learned so much in past couple months about hair then I ever did. Thanks You so much!

    Could you do a tutorial on blowdrying your hair just with your hands and a blowdryer?

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use your hand like a big wide brush and wiggle the hair a lot while you dry it, work it around and cook it until the frizz goes away and the hair starts to shine a bit (this happens a few minutes after it’s already dry). That’s a good approach if you like your waves and cowlicks. Using the dryer without adding tension (from a brush) won’t change much of the hair’s characteristics. I’ve got an older video about “the best brushes for mens hair” (or some title to that effect) which breaks it down a little further.

    do fine hair need a brush like a 9 row brush to build in volume or is that too much tension?

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sort of a case by case thing, sometimes too much tension on fine hair will make it too flat, but it depends on a lot of things (the kind of style, how much wave the hair has, whether or not the hair itself has a smooth or rough texture). I think you can find a nine row brush for like nine bucks, it might be worth trying it and hoping for the best

    Hi Andrew: What heat setting are you using once you begin using a brush (after finger drying)? Does grey, thin, straight male Asian hair have its own challenges? Informative video. Thank you.

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      High heat and high power to rough dry and remove the moisture, then high heat low power to smooth and polish- with just about every dryer I’ve used you get a little more heat out of the low power setting, which is very important for the smoothing process (more heat, more tension, more smooth). Once the hair is smooth you’ll want to use hot and then cold air to set it where you want it (this is why your dryer has a cold button). Think of the cold air like when you iron a shirt, whatever the shirt cools doing it stays doing- the cold button allows you to speed up the cooling process. Hair is the same way, heat makes it malleable and then wherever it cools it stays, but you don’t want to do this until after it’s been smoothed out or else it’ll stay frizzy and wiry. Asian hair and grey hair are both challenging, but generally speaking this method will still provide some help- what’s important is a good haircut which will allow for the hairs that need to bend to stay long enough to do so (like with any material, a longer piece of hair is less rigid than the same hair at a shorter length). I find commonly that clients with this type of difficult hair want to keep it very short to avoid it ever going out of place, which is a fine option except that shorter hair requires more frequent haircuts to maintain and offers less versatility while styling, so you kind of have to choose your hard and go with a longer lasting more versatile haircut that REQUIRES thorough styling, or to simply chop down the problem hairs where you can and stay on top of chopping them down regularly. A down side with the latter is that a grown out short haircut is incredibly hard to style but a shaped up longer haircut is easier to style (and a grown out longer haircut isn’t typically hard to style). So there’s a common loop I see for coarse and/or grey hair where the client struggles through impossible hairstyling in three weeks so they can have the easiest hairstyling today, rather than keeping a sort of medium difficulty throughout the duration of the cut.

    • @andrewdoeshair
      @andrewdoeshair  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lancer717 heat and tension will “seal the cuticle” which means the surface of the hair strand will become smoother and flatter, reflecting more light (adding shine) and allowing the hairs to move independently without catching on each other (when your hairs all stick to each other and wad up together- that’s frizz). You see this sealed cuticle happen very quickly and dramatically with a flat iron, but the hairdryer takes a little longer to get there because it doesn’t get quite as hot.
