my mom accidentally bought 20 bars of soap a couple years ago, and the fact, that they haven't run out yet, makes me feel, like restock influencers are preparing for the apocalypse
@@arikastrat Your mom bought 20 bars of soap years ago and still hasn’t run out? Are you serious??? So you guys only shower & use soap once a month? wtf
@tovah884 How fast do you think you go through a bar of soap? On average a bar of soap will last a family of 4 about 30 days. If you have 2 people in your house it will last 45-60 days. And if it's a big bar vs a small bar also matters. So that time frame is reasonable.
@@tovah8841 honestly 1 bar of soap being used up in less than a week by a single person is wilder to me. I'd have to take like 5 showers a day to go through a bar that fast. Either your bar of soap is small af or it disintegrates/crumbles very easily
Wow, so restock logic: buy your products that come in a container that was designed to house them long-term on a shelf. Now, buy another container so you can decant the item into a second storage container. Now buy another container to transport the item from the second storage space to the third storage space. This is bananas and incredibly wasteful!
Not sure if you’ve seen them before, but I saw a super great positive restock genre: restock my classroom supplies kit. It was a bunch of drawers for kids who might not have essential or hygiene items at home, so there were drawers for toothpaste, soap, hair ties, wipes, snacks, etc. Maybe you have covered them before but if you haven’t you should talk about them!
That's probably the most wholesome restock I've ever heard of. Those are videos I could get behind. Maybe even encourage parents who have the means, to help the teachers by donating a couple of things for the less fortunate kids!
The reason she is filming it is to get the money to be able to support her kids. She works in a very economically struggling area. She does tiktok to support the care closet.
The teen bathroom one was wild to me. Like I didn't have my own bathroom growing up, but if I did, the LAST thing I would want is my mom rifling in my space for content lol
“Just because you become accustomed to something, doesn’t make it a necessity.” Absolutely love this quote from you at 28:09 this is a great reminder when I look at Amazon or somewhere for something that is a want, not a need. Love your content, it’s very much appreciated!
@@fancynancy2888i swear at this point it feels like they're aliens trying to be excited about humans but hyping up the most random things like the "aesthetic" of grocery shelves.... Like??? I'm with u dude
If only everyone knew this at a young age Feel bad for the generation growing up thinking this is the norm. I see so many comments on these overconsumption videos that say "goals 😭"....so sad
im 21, paid off all my consumer debt this month. deleted all socials over time (snapchat was the last to go). youtube videos like this help me stay grounded to my goals! i grew up poor so i had NOOOO idea what 'normal consumption' was. - my mother also has sooo much debt (mostly consumer too). turns out, its literally just having what you use (maybe a spare to hand). i recently got engaged so a lot of life plans to save for! thank you for your calm and rational perspective!
HELL TO THE YEAH!! This is all amazing news and I'm so proud of you and hope you're enjoying your engagement too!!! These comments makes my day and so happy that I create content on the internet
As a european this bathroom conversation is baffling, we all usually share one bathroom with the whole family, if its a big house maybe you have an extra toilet but i dont know anyone who has their own bathroom
Many of us in the States still only have one family bathroom also, I suppose we just don't make TH-cam videos lol. I grew up with 4 people sharing one bathroom, and I raised two girls with one bathroom. But all of the homes built more recently have multiples. I really don't want more to clean anyway!
It baffles me too (as an American lol) but I've never lived in a new home as an adult. I can't imagine Cleanimg all those bathrooms. But I guess maybe they hire help if they really do have that large of a home.
I live in the US and until my family moved, we only had one bathroom. My mom insisted on buying a house with 2 bathrooms and a 1/2 one because there's five kids.. But we never really "restocked" them. We just waited until we ran out of stuff and went to get individuals of the stuff we needed.
Something I do like about the restock videos is they help me appreciate doing mundane things like that in my daily life. I don't have the money to buy excess amounts of products like that, thank goodness, but aesthetic videos like that make me appreciate the calming nature of organizing my house and also little ASMR moments throughout the day while doing it.
Yeah me too. Also, I think it would be too naive to think that anyone really buys so much of one product. I do know that they are given all those for free most likely for content or promotion
The "Gum Drawer" Tiktok make me ask "are you serious" out loud. Who needs a drawer for GUM. I bought a small tub full from the shops months ago, and still haven't run out.
As a Singaporean resident, the gum drawer is fascinating and makes me want to have gum. Mostly because it’s illegal here. Darn, I miss gum. But yeah, the drawer is dumb though.
@@okestperson6016 I heard that cleaning out the gum stuck to the sidewalks/seats etc was more expensive than what they earned from selling it so the government just decided to ban it all together 😅
for people in these comments who wishes to buy clear acrylic containers for food and stuff, consider reusing glass jars. They look nice when you remove the labels and they're way more durable :)
@@lioh656 true! But they are heavy, and if you drop one, you'll waste all the food or product inside, because a jar can even look like it didn't break, but a tiny piece of glass may be off from under the lid, and now it's in your grain :( It's still a good idea for small jars that are not too heavy even when full, so less risk to drop them.
The kitchen "restock" that actually has some sense is for powders you regularly use, like sugar or starch. You fill a small jar to easily take from when cooking, while the bag is clipped shut in a cupboard further away from the stove, so it doesn't absorb moisture as quickly. In humid climates there's often a crust that forms at the bottom of those jars thanks to the powders clumping up
Well you probably never heard of my exes automatic lube dispenser (it was great in theory, practically it stood on the headboard and from time to time there was lube dripping on your face at night)
I enjoy watching 'slice of life' vlogs from people living simply, modestly, within their means in various countries and cultures. I like how comforting and connecting it is, it normalises having less, non-aesthetic living, hand-me-downs / preowned / old / well used and mismatched stuff. It encourages mindfulness and gratitude about consumption, making do, and focusing on living life rather than on 'stuff' and consumption. I'm really enjoying the deinfluencing content and topics around conscious consumption.
I didn't even know people looked at the expiration dates on this stuff lol. Soap, shampoo, laundry detergent, growing up it was you grab from the stockpile in the basement when you ran out. Buying for a large family you buy in bulk when it is on sale.
I'd love to see a video on the HOLY GRAIL PROBLEM. One of the overconsumption drivers is the "holy grail" approach to beauty and fashion. Even if you are using and wearing things you love, WHAT IF your new "holy grail" is still out there? I found myself doing this with everything from shampoo to perfume to purses to sweaters. I already love what I have, but what if this new thing is my holy grail?? Once I realized that this mindset is toxic, my consumption went way down. Content creators and beauty/fashion companies use the holy grail approach on purpose to make us want more, just like Amazon "must haves" etc.
Modern restock content is crazy to me because I've been a "restocker" my whole life, but (to use the soap example) when i start a new handsoap, i go buy ONE to keep in backstock so i dont risk running out when i really need it or forgetting to add it to the grocery list. Having SO much backstock is wild to me
I do the same. I always have one new one on hand for toiletries I always use and pantry items we eat a lot. (So for example, when we cook a meal with a certain jar of sauce, I'll replace that jar in the pantry, so I have it when I want to cook that meal again. But I only do this for meals we eat every month.)
I remembered looking at a reel about a mom making a beautiful lunch for her daughter and everyone in the comments were saying that they wish their mom made a lunch like that or even worse : "my mom only packed me a sandwich and an apple 😑". These comments made me so mad and sad... Its just putting more pressure on moms that they aren't doing enough which they are... The goal isn't to make the cutest lunch but to have something to eat for the day. There's many kids who their parents are struggling financially and they wished their mom make them a sandwich... My mother didnt have a ton of money and I never judged her for just having a sandwich, a jus box and one snack in my lunch. Some people lost their gratitudes...
This is such a good point. My mom still made lunch for me alongside her elementary-aged kids all the way through high school. She made me and her four other kids a sandwich and side snack every single night for years and I still think about how kind it was that she kept doing that for me when I surely could have done it myself. I wish I had thought to help her out with them at the time. My executive function was trash in high school and I probably wouldn’t have eaten during the day if she didn’t send a lunch with me! That’s love too and she didn’t even have to put it in a fancy bento😂 I’m sure the tiktok lunch making moms are doing it over the top every day from a place of love too but for the rest of us it’s good to remember that it’s also a job for them to make it hyper-aesthetic and not some standard we aren’t meeting as parents.
Same thing for me ! I was still happy to have my lunch no matter what was inside! I want to add a new point that if, as a mom, you want to pack a cute lunch for your child, it's totally okay!! But don't put pressure on yourself if you can't do it or you dont have the time or energy. Your child will still be happy ! :)
This is nice to hear. I'm a sandwich, apple, and handful of a snack or two in some baggies mom. We aren't poor at all, I'm just frazzled and not aesthetic. I love spending time with my kids, but not cutting bread creatively or doing other bento things. I hope they realize I love them through other means
im 19 and my mom still makes my lunches for work (she just makes double of whatever she's having and packs it for me) and its the sweetest thing 😭 it's usually salads, nothing fancy, but its one of my fav parts of my workday knowing that my mom wants to make sure i eat nourishing and tasty food
But you would probably purchase them anyway, and you don't buy extras that you won't use in the pursuit of a full rainbow right? Cause that's what these people would do. "I don't drink decaf but I needed orange for my rainbow." 😂
They are to help your laundry smell better. It’s a scent booster for stinky clothes. I use it in my house. I have four kids and do laundry every day of the week. The scent booster beads are more beneficial with bedding (sheets, blankets etc). But they also work well for pool towels and bathing suits where the fabric still smells like chlorine even after washing. They are a “bonus”- not needed, but nice to have.
at my dad's, we literally were 7 kids and 2 adults.. we shared 2 bathrooms. bc we didn't "deserve" our own ones? nah, bc the house was built that way lol what is this madness
it just seems weird to have a house with 6 bedrooms and only 2 bathrooms though? like when everyone happens to need to use the restroom at the same time, some people in the home just have to hold it? why design a house like that
@@amandak.4246 well, if we would've had that many bedrooms then yes, it'd be really weird planned out. though none of us had our own rooms, since the house clearly wasn't built to hold so many people. we just hade to make it work
similarly, I remember when it was not normal for a kid to even have their own cellphone before they were fourteen/fifteen or have a TV in their room. the fact people are saying it's normal or even necessary for kids to have their own mini fridges and bathrooms is just insane to me.
I am trying to just have one of my products. It gets out of hand so quickly. Do not buy things until one is finished, you will be shocked by how long it takes you to finish what you have.
I personally like to have one or two extra of most of my hygiene products at any given time. Sure, it might take a while to get through a certain product but it’s the type of stuff that I’ll forget to buy because I don’t think about it that often and it's quite annoying to get in the shower, get all wet and only then realize you have no shampoo. Or you might just not have the time to go buy it that week when you notice the bottle is about to be empty. I think the stuff in these videos is definitely excessive but there’s no need for things to be either 8 or 80. You don’t need 10 shampoos in your drawer at the same time but it’s just more convenient to have 1 or 2 extra lying around for when you need it 🤷🏼♀️
Also sometimes you can buy those saving packs that have like 2 body moisturizers for example and save a little money. For example, right now I have 2 extras of both my shampoo, body moisturizer and hair mask and 1 extra of my conditioner that I keep under the sink in my bathroom. It was all bought on sale, it doesn’t exactly completely clutter up my bathroom and now I don’t have to worry about running out of it because I forgot to buy more for a good couple of months. It’s kinda the same concept as people who buy all their groceries for the week in one shopping trip so they don’t have to find the time throughout the week to go to store again
A house with 3 bedrooms (right now that could easily be worth 500K+ where I am) would normally have only 2 full baths... that means siblings are absolutely sharing bathrooms even in relatively well-off families. The only people i know who had BRs to themselves growing up were only children lol.
these videos are my fave. cause the restock videos are entertaining to me, but sometimes they're out of hand, and your commentary is like my inner thoughts on it 😅
In my case you are 100% correct. When I discovered tic toc I began buying so much more. I felt like I was "learning " what was normal. Now I realize that I don't need all this stuff and it's just going to waste. Thank you for what you are doing!
I look at the thumbnail and I realized that I have like 20 soaps at home and I haven’t bought soap in 2 years.😂 It’s crazy how many people gifted me soap over the years I always remember I have a replacement and I just got used to never buying soap lmao. It’s always interesting what soap will be next (I keep them in one bag and choose them randomly when I need a replacement) because they all are in different shapes and colors. Starfish soap, grapes soap, seashell soap, flower soap I literally have it all. Probably it’s because I asked people to buy me useful gifts instead of little trinkets that will collect dust so everyone magically switched to fancy soaps😂 I mean soaps don’t really go bad and I’m constantly using them so I guess it is a win situation even if there are too many I will get through them eventually lol
😂😂😂 hey at least they're giving you soaps and not towels 😅. I like your "what's going to be next" game, it gives the thrill of getting something different and new.
That's actually amazing, haha! Reminded me that I never have to buy any shower gel since my partner gets one from every member of his family for birthdays, namedays and Christmas. 😄
As someone who grew up with a parent who primarily showed their love through buying things, it's really created a strain on my relationship with that parent now that I'm an adult. This parent's family had struggled financially while they grew up, so they felt they NEEDED to buy as many things as possible in order for us to have what they didn't have growing up, thus showcasing love. The majority of bonding time I had with this parent growing up was spent at the mall or another store, and not at home. I also ended up developing issues with overspending in my teen years and early 20s, but I've been doing a really good job of being more conscious of what I buy (your content has helped with that, Shawna!). I've been trying to repair this relationship with my parent gradually over time. It's just difficult because when you grow up like this, it's hard to know what a "real" show of familial love is. Like, what do we do if we're not shopping? That sort of thing. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your content, and that even though I've only been a subscriber for a few weeks, I've watched pretty much every single one of your videos you've posted in the last few months. Thank you for keeping it real and for all that you do! ❤🐸
I’m going to make a meandering comment about seasonal beauty/personal care products. But it ties in with ~25:00 of your video (TT 5) I have one specific type of lotion that I use and swear by. It is “pricier”, not outrageously so, just not cheap. This brand does seasonal limited edition scents. I used to stock up, especially on the winter/Christmas scents. Often they would have buy one get one 40% off sales. Then rotate through the different scents throughout the year. I would always have this backstock of 6-8 half used lotions waiting for the season. When I finally decided (for financial and minimalist reasons) to go through the back stock it took me literal YEARS. About 4 years later and I’ve been using Christmas lotion since November of last year! And I use this lotion daily… All that’s to say, I learned that I would much rather pay full price and just have ONE of a lotion I really love. And not have to drag seasonal lotions into other seasons. Because smelling like pine trees in July is just not the vibe
I’m going through the same thing right now with what’s left of my Bath & Body Works hand soaps, lotions, and shower gels. It’s been like 2 years and I’ve been rotating them seasonally and I still have maybe 6 total I’m trying to get through. Scratches the seasonal itch though! Instead of going back to the store I just pulled out the half full bottle of Pumpkin Pecan foaming soap from the cleaning closet😅 I’ve finally gotten through all of my hotel minis and random shampoos so I’m enjoying having just my shampoo bar, conditioner bar, and my non-holiday bar soap now. I’m still fighting through my last summer lotion before I get to my last Christmas bottle. It’s funny how long it can take to pan something we use every single day! Just goes to show how little “back-stock” we really need to have on hand.
I have never bought body lotion for myself and yet I still have about 7 on the go because it's a good gift. Plus I hardly ever have dry skin and usually its only my hands so I never use them. But I feel bad getting rid of so much unused product and they do smell nice. Can't give them away as everyone I know has the same problem 😂 so I will be haunted by hand creams forever
Not gonna lie... when I saw tik tok 6, I was in awe. It doesn't motivate me to buy anything, but it really pleased the adhd part of my brain that benefits from seeing all of my grocery items displayed and knowing how much of an item I have so that I'm motivated to use the items I have and not create food waste.
I would read a book sized essay that tracked the use of the word “restock” through generations/time periods. Like up until watching these videos, I had only heard the word restock at work. We restock merchandise. (Which arguably is also what they’re doing) When I run out of things, I say “I need to buy more” NOT I need to “restock” because even saying that implies an excess or a need for more product than is necessary for ONE PERSON. The only other use of the work I use is in the phrase “stock up”. Like when something is really cheap or seasonal (meaning I “stock up” on pumpkin puree because I know I make 4-5 batches of pumpkin bread in the fall and after October 1st it’s sold out in every store. NOT I will need this in January, so might as well buy 12 cans now). Just the infiltration of corporate/business language into a home is so fascinating. We know longer buy stuff, we restock inventories of useless shit that will never run out because it is impossible to even CONSUME it in a rate that validates all the buying. Can we even call it “overconsumption” when these people aren’t even using what they buy???? Anyway, those are just my thoughts from this video. I don’t watch every video from this series, so this might have been covered already, but I just find the linguistics behind the trend particularly fascinating.
I have a wheat allergy and my niece has a peanut allergy, and we have to always check ingredients (and then double check before eating, we get a little worried) so we could never eat in one of these houses where it is all put into new containers!🤣
The only way that gum drawer appeals to me is thinking it could be nice at work because 7 of us share gum and snacks constantly, but usually we just let the bags or packs loosely float in drawers or on desks for someone else to grab from. Having that in your home for maybe 2 people is a lot weirder by comparison because there's no way you're going through that much gum. I know so many of these restocks aren't meant to be realistically consumed, but I can't move past how impractical it is if it isn't in a communal or work setting. Thank you again for the effort you put in on your videos and having a place for these discussions!
I have to watch some videos with Amazon essentials to find the perfect container where I put the stuff after I took it out of the container it came with.
I find the laundry ones extra crazy because I've swapped over to using soap nuts which get composted when they're used up and white vinegar as the "softener"/deodorizer. Super super simple and I'd never go anywhere near the scent beads or detergent pods. It's all about fiber care and water reduction for me.
@@tomjones2157 how? White vinegar costs like 50p for a 500ml bottle, which is more expensive than buying in bulk. You can buy a big bag of soap nuts for less than the price of a bottle of detergent.
i absolutely agree with you that some of these creators put items in jars with lids or other closed containers when it isn't needed. my opinion is that they bought containers without planning out what containers they would need for the items they typically use. bc if they had, they would have gotten a little bin for something like that instead of a container with a lid.
yes!! This can happen when you get this idea of I want to organize X space, and get excited about buying stuff. Sometimes the buying stuff is more exciting!! Then they get home and try to make things happen. Or, if people buy the containers they see on tiktok instead of measuring and trying to find the solution that works best for their space.
In particular, at 16:55, I don't understand what was wrong with the original container that the shower steamers were in. I think that they were packaged in a box that would look nice sitting on the counter.
Yup, went back to double check and the pink barhroom and the black bathroom are the same. Even in the same stock you wouldn't be able to get identical marbled floor tiles
Shawna, I’m so glad I found you. Your closing thoughts really hit home in this episode and you are really changing my mindset towards unnecessary spending. What you say makes so much sense. Thank you!
books, I hoard books and it's as bad as those videos because libraries (and ebooks) exist but it's so satisfying to see all those stories in your shelves even if you don't manage to read all of them in your lifetime. I really need to stop buying more books.
Scent beads equals itchy skin😮 my first thought. I only use laundry soap (nothing else) so many scents from bathing, lotions, laundry, perfumes and my skin starts to crawl 😮. When I see these restocks I run to see if my fridge looks normal LOL. Just gives me the crawlyies😢
Duuuude! I was kinda wondering if a lot of these kitchen stocking/cleaning videos were actually filmed in rental community kitchens or kitchen studios?
I do understand buying a lot of something that you know that you will use when it is on sale. When dish soap, aluminum foil or laundry detergent go on sale at Costco; I do buy more than I need at the time.
The way people are trying to convince themselves that they are not hoarding with this many products in general is actually more detrimental to their mental health than just buying 1-5 scrubs at most and allowing room for trying new stuff once they actually run out of it. Also it’s terrible for your skin and prematurely ages it if you exfoliate more than 2-3 times per week 😅 How are so many people unaware of the damage they’re doing to their skin’s barrier with excessive use of scrubs, exfoliants, etc
I bought a lot of fun, handmade soap during the panini. We were washing our hands constantly and there wasn't that much to get excited about. I've used them all and now I'm back to normal, boring soaps.
When i did what was the "kids" bathroom in my house in 2011, I got a shower curtain that contained the favorite colors of the 2 kids. Of course, those kids are now grown and gone, but i haven't changed that curtain yet.
Honestly the things I dislike most about these restock tiktoks is first of all the need some of these people have to tap or crinkle or run their fingers over every single little thing, and second of all half of them have their sleeves pulled over their hands and when I see that I'm just watching it like "pull your damn sleeves up!" Oh, and a bonus third thing, when they're stocking a bag and put one of those spray hand sanitizers in and they spray it randomly in the air before putting it into the bag like we need to see exactly what it does and how it works (even though we ALL know how it works because you know the hand sanitizer I'm on about, Touchland or something like that is the brand I think), I'm just like "You're wasting the product!" Yeah it's normally only a couple sprays but still, those things are (according to my research) $10 for a 30ml thing, and while that may not seem like much to some in my eyes that's a lot to spend on something like hand sanitizer (For any fellow Brits here btw, that's around £7.70)
i feel like that's definitely influenced by asmr, a lot of people find those noises and their rhythm soothing but if you don't like that i can see how it might be irritating
Watching these videos, I've come to realize that I really do appreciate the organization in so many of these restock videos. But it hasn't made me want to go out and buy stuff and organize it. It's made me want to downsize what I have so that I can more neatly organize what's left.
I raised 3 kids with only one bathroom in the house. Guess what? They were fine and still fine. *for you Shawna, my daughter is going back to school to get her masters in Gender studies!!!🎉🎉🎉
As far I know over here (Europe, specifically the Netherlands) most houses don't have more than one bathroom (in newly built houses more bathrooms is becoming more common) and we are all still alive ;D
@roadtoantiquity Depending on size and layout, houses can have smaller additional ones. No big deal, but one of my former gf's mother said she wouldn't want to live without at least one bathroom per person. By that time I didn't get the point but when I think of it now, I wonder if that was an attempt to poor shame me.
this is the norm in the uk! 7 ppl to one bathroom and its literally completely fine lol. annoying iin the mornings but its a canon event to race ur siblings to the bathroom
i mean if your kids bedroom has it's own bathroom.. why not Decorate it with your kid? have them pick out stuff to decorate it with. make it a fun activity with them. decorating it for them defeats the point kinda. when we needed a new shower curtain at home. i was the one who picked it out out of the ones at Ikea. it was a pretty dark blue that fades to white at the bottom. and our bathroom is shared with the fam so. everyone got a little input.
This is absolutely wild to me. I am from Lithuania (east/ north Europe). Grew up in a 2 bedroom flat, shared a room with my sister all my life, we had one small bathroom for everyone. Nothing would ever go to waste as we did not have money and resources to waste. I am very grateful for this experience as I continue this lifestyle to this day. Honestly, I think most people still live this way, and it’s wild this absolutely normal lifestyle is called underconsumption.
I hope one day you do a video about things that look harmless to stock up, like stationary and hobby related things. I wasn't conscious when I piled up like 10 jigsaw puzzles and a lot of sticky notes 😅.
Same! nothing but water in a water bottle all food stays in the main living area same with my kid i hate bugs he only takes a spillproof cup in his room 😂
No food upstairs. Then, with my kids, it was no food in the bedrooms because they were on the same level. I certainly would not have been given a mini fridge for my room and would not have given my kids mini fridges.
Absolutely same here, if I wanted to injure my eardums and self esteem my dad just had to catch me with anything but water upstairs 😂 “that’s how you get ants”
Something that I do especially with low storage is 1. Really thinking about if I can decompress or put this somewhere in the space I have. 2. I’ll only buy one decore item per season. (And some seasons I don’t bother with just the main ones that get me like Halloween, Chinese new year, etc.) It helps me focus on something reusable and better quality and it also really helps me pause and think about if this is my ONE item I want this year (the answer is usually no).
I’ve never been a “season” girl really, but my new way to get into the spirit is through making a list of “fall” movies/books, recipes that seem fall-like or use seasonal produce (sweet potato! Pumpkin! Cinnamon apple! Soups & stews) and only if I need to “restock something”, will I get the fall themed one (ex: need creamer? I get pumpkin spice. Ran out of body wash? I get a seasonal one instead of the summery citrus one I had before) But to be fair I absolutely hate orange so I’m usually not tempted for “fall decor” or even holiday decor much
My sister had a housewarming party last October, in she and her partner’s recently purchased 1951 bungalow. The bathroom has pink tile, so she had pink toilet paper to match. It unwittingly freaked many of the guests out, as they thought there was something wrong with them while they were wiping. 😂
I bought two pump soaps for my bathroom. I just go and get liquid dial refills and good to go! I haven't bought any since. just reuse the bottles! Love when you go through and break down these tic tocs! Learning a lot! Been noticing I have an issue with buying books I don't really need and your channel is helping me understand and limit my spending. I love books and realizing I need to slow down and read the ones I have. I've deleted the app because booktok wasn't helping. Thank you for your videos! I really enjoy them!
I have slowly come to despise the crunch crunch of wrappers in ASMR restock videos. It's like a visceral reaction of disgust.😂 Something about it just reeks of overconsumption and utter privilege. I'll live my unaesthetic but practical life, thank you❤
I love the thumbnail tagline!! I encapsulates the ridiculousness. I think I want to try it as a general reply to the everyday overconsumption I encounter… “ya don’t need 30 soaps!!!” 😂❤
The rug things on top of the toilet and around it...GROSS. Also, what is the point of trying to have this really clean aesthetic and then have those, or exposed toothbrushes and make up sponges? Too much shopping seems to be softening people's brains.
Years ago saw a mini fridge in some Disney movie (main character teen was rich) and I was OBSESSED! Always circled them hopefully in the sears Christmas catalogue lol. I survived without one I promise!
I reckon restock started as an ASMR genre that happened to work at selling products. It makes no sense otherwise. Like the editing, the great sound design, focus on repetition and rhythm. None of that is in favour of the products shown, it’s for ASMR.
I used to use refillable containers. I stopped because they usually don’t work as well as the original packaging. Now I have clear bins to somewhat organize. “Flours, sugars, miscellaneous baking, etc.”
I stock up on things I use consistently and quickly, and I haven't changed in the last 3 years. Deodorant, toothpaste, shaving cream, lotion, tissue. And even then I don't hold more than 4 at a time.
Oh my goodness, that mini fridge restock! I would say to give your child unsupervised snacks in that volume is irresponsible parenting. All I see in that fridge is diabetes, tooth decay and potential disordered eating! Thanks for another great video ❤
I was also not allowed to eat in my room 😅 When I got in my 20s I began sneaking food into my room and my mom was finally like alright... but clean it up!!!
As a person that does not have TikTok and just recently found out that this restock thing is a thing I’m just laughing because it is so far from reality like whaaaattt is happening 😂 people stop watching those reels y’all are getting brainwashed! This was not even a thing two years ago (I’m guessing). I’m honestly scared for humanity. How easy it is to manipulate humans. I have ONE soap and when it runs I buy a new one. Save your money people! Thanks Shawna for again addressing these issues.
Just discovered your videos and adore them! I don't have TikTok but what I see leaking into other platforms is more than enough. Love your intelligent thoughts on overconsumption and your discussion of why it seems so appealing as a form of viral content. Personally, I am shocked how these frankly perverse levels of excess are seen as sth to aspire to by so many people.
In our village, we have a wonderful service for those who like to keep their houses simple and organized. They keep all the stuff we may need like food, soap, towels, dishes, everything. We can come and take whatever we need, and we only pay for the stuff we're taking. No long-term obligations like with storage spaces, no added conditions. They keep their place clean and organize it themselves, they restock, and they even help us find what we need. Called "a shop". Probably every human settlement needs something like it. Very convenient.
I used to work at Lush and I need to tell soap backstock people: soap shrinks! If you have backstock sitting there for years your soap will dry out, crack and shrink. If it's on sale or you're buying from a small business you'll never see again, sure buy 2 or 3. But don't have 10+, it'll be crusty and dusty and you won't want to use it by the time you get to it!
my mom accidentally bought 20 bars of soap a couple years ago, and the fact, that they haven't run out yet, makes me feel, like restock influencers are preparing for the apocalypse
@@redshed2020 wait what !!!!!!!! 1 bar of soap for 4 people in a month??? wtf 😳!!! I use a bar of soap in less than a week!!! 4 days tops!! lol 😆

How much time is being spent on doing all this and how much it’s taking up in one’s mind 🤪
Also decreasing the stability of the products..
And that's not even talking about how it would decrease its lifespan
😂😂😂 the transferring from the secondary container to the tertiary container was bonkers!
it really is wild
Not sure if you’ve seen them before, but I saw a super great positive restock genre: restock my classroom supplies kit. It was a bunch of drawers for kids who might not have essential or hygiene items at home, so there were drawers for toothpaste, soap, hair ties, wipes, snacks, etc. Maybe you have covered them before but if you haven’t you should talk about them!
That's probably the most wholesome restock I've ever heard of. Those are videos I could get behind. Maybe even encourage parents who have the means, to help the teachers by donating a couple of things for the less fortunate kids!
Awesome until people expect teachers to do that. $$$$
I got the impression that parents in the US often had to buy extra school supplies, aside from the essentials they buy for their own kids.
The reason she is filming it is to get the money to be able to support her kids. She works in a very economically struggling area. She does tiktok to support the care closet.

Ohhh this is such a good take!! You’re on to something here!
Most newer houses have a bathroom for each bedroom and a guest bathroom.
My in-laws have 3 bathrooms. For the two of them lmao.

It’s illegal there?? Do they give a reason why?

for people in these comments who wishes to buy clear acrylic containers for food and stuff, consider reusing glass jars.

I enjoy watching 'slice of life' vlogs from people living simply, modestly, within their means in various countries and cultures. I like how comforting and connecting it is, it normalises having less, non-aesthetic living, hand-me-downs / preowned / old / well used and mismatched stuff.
👍😘

Yes! It is SO normal for homes to have 1 or 2 bathrooms.
it just seems weird to have a house with 6 bedrooms and only 2 bathrooms though? like when everyone happens to need to use the restroom at the same time, some people in the home just have to hold it? why design a house like that
@@amandak.4246 well, if we would've had that many bedrooms then yes, it'd be really weird planned out. though none of us had our own rooms, since the house clearly wasn't built to hold so many people. we just hade to make it work

similarly, I remember when it was not normal for a kid to even have their own cellphone before they were fourteen/fifteen or have a TV in their room. the fact people are saying it's normal or even necessary for kids to have their own mini fridges and bathrooms is just insane to me.

I’m going to make a meandering comment about seasonal beauty/personal care products. But it ties in with ~25:00 of your video (TT 5)
I have one specific type of lotion that I use and swear by.
And I use this lotion daily…
All that’s to say, I learned that I would much rather pay full price and just have ONE of a lotion I really love.
@@NecaylPerry im the same - i saved my half-used fall/holiday soap from last year and I'm looking forward to bringing it back out in October.🍂 😊🍂
That's a good point and also what if you want to check cooking instructions or nutrition information
@@sofiastj especially if they reuse the containers! The food restock videos fill me with dread
Thank you again for the effort you put in on your videos and having a place for these discussions!

i absolutely agree with you that some of these creators put items in jars with lids or other closed containers when it isn't needed. my opinion is that they bought containers without planning out what containers they would need for the items they typically use. bc if they had, they would have gotten a little bin for something like that instead of a container with a lid.

Thank you!
I will say that it is cheaper to buy the soaps out of season on clearance than when they are in season.
Soaps have a season? Aren't soaps always available?
Restock videos look like hoarding to me, if I were to pick something to hoard it wouldn't be chewing gum or scent beads.
books, I hoard books and it's as bad as those videos because libraries (and ebooks) exist but it's so satisfying to see all those stories in your shelves even if you don't manage to read all of them in your lifetime.
Same. Im fragrance free even on laundry detergent , body wash, body lotion etc. My skin is very sensitive
Definitely, I’ve gotten contact dermatitis from laundry detergent too many times already!!
Omg what if people are renting out bathrooms to do these tiktoks😳😳😳 like the private jet sets
I have wondered if people maybe take a posh Air BnB for a couple of days to make several videos,
I believe it. This world is so dystopian now and weird.
Duuuude! I was kinda wondering if a lot of these kitchen stocking/cleaning videos were actually filmed in rental community kitchens or kitchen studios?
Bath scrubs restoking make me never want to rebuy one, happy with one at a time
I do understand buying a lot of something that you know that you will use when it is on sale.
I love it that you call it the "panini". I may have to steal that.
As someone with misophonia, the crinkly ASMR drives me absolutely bloody bonkers.
It took getting ants in the house once,to be forbidden from taking food out of the kitchen forever after.
All of these annoy me too. I end up disliking and blocking creators now.
As designed, it’s rage bait
i feel like that's definitely influenced by asmr, a lot of people find those noises and their rhythm soothing but if you don't like that i can see how it might be irritating
The tapping of the talons enrages me but maybe that’s what they want
Watching these videos, I've come to realize that I really do appreciate the organization in so many of these restock videos. But it hasn't made me want to go out and buy stuff and organize it. It's made me want to downsize what I have so that I can more neatly organize what's left.
This
the gum one gets me!😳 i’ve had the same container of gum for months now! absolutely no need for someone to have that amount of gum!
I can’t imagine sharing a bathroom with someone..certainly during the flu season 🤢
this is the norm in the uk! 7 ppl to one bathroom and its literally completely fine lol. annoying iin the mornings but its a canon event to race ur siblings to the bathroom
@@epochabi a downstairs toilet (I think Americans call this a half bath?) is SO useful, I will say.
I need Shawna to deinfluence me from buying the cardigan she’s wearing. You look so cute! 💜
i mean if your kids bedroom has it's own bathroom.. why not Decorate it with your kid? have them pick out stuff to decorate it with. make it a fun activity with them. decorating it for them defeats the point kinda.
when we needed a new shower curtain at home. i was the one who picked it out out of the ones at Ikea. it was a pretty dark blue that fades to white at the bottom. and our bathroom is shared with the fam so. everyone got a little input.
I am in lovvvve with that shirt, girly pop! The buttons especially are so cute!🪻
You have such a calming voice. This is the first video I watched from you and I really liked it ✨
Stocking from your restocked cabinet. That’s next level.
Am i the only 1 who grew up in a house where you couldn't take food above the first floor? Let alone my own fridge full of my favorite snacks🧐
Number one top tip: grow up in an apartment where everything is on one level 😅
Same! nothing but water in a water bottle all food stays in the main living area same with my kid i hate bugs he only takes a spillproof cup in his room 😂
Nope it was ILLEGAL to bring food to the second floor 😂
No food upstairs. Then, with my kids, it was no food in the bedrooms because they were on the same level. I certainly would not have been given a mini fridge for my room and would not have given my kids mini fridges.
Absolutely same here, if I wanted to injure my eardums and self esteem my dad just had to catch me with anything but water upstairs 😂 “that’s how you get ants”
could you do a video on seasonal decor. I'm definitely struggling with impulse control, looking at people buying fall decor.
Something that I do especially with low storage is 1. Really thinking about if I can decompress or put this somewhere in the space I have. 2. I’ll only buy one decore item per season. (And some seasons I don’t bother with just the main ones that get me like Halloween, Chinese new year, etc.)
It helps me focus on something reusable and better quality and it also really helps me pause and think about if this is my ONE item I want this year (the answer is usually no).
I get a seasonal one instead of the summery citrus one I had before)
But to be fair I absolutely hate orange so I’m usually not tempted for “fall decor” or even holiday decor much
@@cjr790 seasonal decorations on an existing house plant can be a nice thing to do, and a small garland for eg doesn't take up a lot of room.
very likely coming in September!
Yesss I need seasonal deinfluencing. I’m a pumpkin spice millennial so pls help lol
I liked what you said about associating good parents with buying their kids stuff and love. Love has nothing to do with buying stuff.
Side note: your sweater is so cute!! 🤎
My sister had a housewarming party last October, in she and her partner’s recently purchased 1951 bungalow. The bathroom has pink tile, so she had pink toilet paper to match. It unwittingly freaked many of the guests out, as they thought there was something wrong with them while they were wiping. 😂
37:41 My parents would _never dream of_ buying and restocking a mini fridge for me. 🤪
Hey Shawna, love your highlights, and your makeup is so pretty!!! Also love your sweater, I'm dying over the flower buttons😍😊❤
The gum one looks like a drawer you'd see at the dentist as a kid when you get to pick out a toothbrush
Romanticize my life by walking to the library to go work
Great content! Thank you for taking the time to talk about these important topics.
I have been loving your content lately and what you said after the pantry video was really beautiful and just nice to hear ♥️
so glad to hear it 💕
I like the restock o'clock videos that poke fun at the restock
We have one bathroom and honestly, I love it that way. Only one bathroom to clean!
The rug things on top of the toilet and around it...GROSS. Also, what is the point of trying to have this really clean aesthetic and then have those, or exposed toothbrushes and make up sponges? Too much shopping seems to be softening people's brains.
The makeup sponges got me. I just got visions of them crawling with bacteria.
You clean the rugs around the toilet. The bare floor would be freezing in the winter.
@@Skittl1321ok but the thought of the toilet cover is disgusting
@@Skittl1321 Do you walk barefoot in the bathroom/toilet? Take off your shoes when you take a piss?
@@HakaYonderyes? Not everyone wears shoes around the house.
Years ago saw a mini fridge in some Disney movie (main character teen was rich) and I was OBSESSED! Always circled them hopefully in the sears Christmas catalogue lol. I survived without one I promise!
Me watching the mini fridge restock: Do I want to get a mini fridge? No, I think I just want those mini Starburst 😂
Americans have the best snacks to be honest
keep em coming Shawna you are so awesome
thank you! Glad you enjoyed
I think your videos are important to teach the newer generation that this isn’t normal.
Oh my goodness, that mini fridge restock! I would say to give your child unsupervised snacks in that volume is irresponsible parenting. All I see in that fridge is diabetes, tooth decay and potential disordered eating! Thanks for another great video ❤
The mini fridge in the room would make my mom scream haha we were never allowed to eat in our rooms, had to eat at the table
I was also not allowed to eat in my room 😅 When I got in my 20s I began sneaking food into my room and my mom was finally like alright... but clean it up!!!
I’m from Germany, and we had one bathroom as a family of five. That was completely normal. The idea of several bathrooms is wild to me.
I love how restock videos start with empty containers. 😂 I need to I see videos of people restocking half empty decanters.
Lol, watching this while restocking my bathroom. Just replacing things Ive used up like deoderant and toothbrushes lol
