    After all the hard work and Many delays the ford 8.8 axle swap is completed in my Jeep tj. It's been a long road but will now everything pay off and work as it should. As always doing a gear break in by doing small trips first so I don't cause any issues. I custom built my suspension, added new springs, custom built my own track bar. I also needed to split the transfer case in this video and I show you how to find a seal part number

    You should be fine without the master cylinder upgrade. I did an 8.8 swap in a old tj back in 2001. I was running 35” MTR’s at the time and had no issues. I had a Detroit int the back and lockrite in the front. Just had to take it easy to keep the D30 alive.

  • @GoatOffroad
    @GoatOffroad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    TJ is gonna look so good on 35’s ! I remember when we did our axle swaps and went from drum to discs in the rear Joe I believe put a valve from a ZJ under the hood. Does that sound right? And going to the 35’s made braking a bit more sketchy. If we were going to stay with the HP 30 for a long time we would most likely do the WJ swap for better stopping with the big tires. Great video as always Jerry! ❤️🐞

    • @dieseldirt3994
      @dieseldirt3994 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BackCountryWrenching - I’m pretty sure it was from a ‘98. We seated the pads first then swapped in the ZJ valve. Didn’t notice a big difference until hard braking. Before the rears would lock up quicker.

    Nice work. I have a 99 TJ with an 8.8 with disc's in the back. Taking it on the rocks with 35s the brakes wouldn't lock up. So on a steep decline I'd have the brake pedal pushed as hard as I can and I would slowly roll down the rocks. And taking it camping in the mountain going back down the brakes would smell from being too hot. Now I have bigger 37s, and I also now have dual piston calipers and 13 inch rotors in front that are from a Ram 1500. The big 37s now can lock up with little effort. I also removed the ABS module because of the 8.8, I put in a Mopar non ABS proportioning valve and installed non ABS brake line kit. I'm still on my stock master cylinder.

    • @BackCountryWrenching
      @BackCountryWrenching  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's very interesting, what size are your rims, Mine are 15" but it doesn't look like bigger calipers would fit but I could be wrong

    • @brianjones3245
      @brianjones3245 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BackCountryWrenching with the 35s I ran 15x8 wheels. But upgrading the brakes I had to go up to 17 inch wheels. If I could I would've stayed with 15 inch wheels. But I just gave in to move up to 17 inch wheels because my current brake setup wasn't performing as it should

    hawt dang! Ya built an AMC! letsee now, ferd, GM, Chrysler parts.... yep, checks up, AMC!
    edit:... The Proportioning valves are similar to XJ ones I looked into for my '98. I might suggest gutting the stock proportioning valve of the uhm, the brake valving part to the rears and use an adjustable unit.

    • @BackCountryWrenching

      I'm thinking so too in the future just testing at the moment

  • @tomhubbard353
    @tomhubbard353 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I put an 8.8 in my 99 TJ a couple years back, some things I learned are....
    The limited slip is not very good beyond soft dirt, sand, mud etc. even after rebuilding it.
    The factory master and proportioning valve has been working without issue. I may be able to gain more breaking power/ability with an adjustable valve, but I'm not sure.
    I am removing the Explorer 8.8 and installing an F150 8.8 now to gain the width to match the D44 that is going in the front. The D44 is from a 76 F150. I am curious with the significantly larger diameter caliper pistons, will the stock master handle it? We will see.

    A pro tip for you Jerry try calling your local parts houses with your skf # and have them cross reference the numbers to their brand. Also alot of times the numbers you get in those catalogs have been superseded. Cross referencing helps catch those discrepancies. Good luck bud

      @@BackCountryWrenching true there used to be a lot more professionals. A good parts guy can basically diagnose your problem without even seeing your vehicle Thru telling him the symptoms. So many became service writers. Now they’re mostly dummies. Ask for the manager they usually will do it plus if they have it in stock itll save you a lot of wasted time. They’ve come thru for me in a pinch penty of time. Make those fukkers work. Cheers

    Why isn't there a seal in the front of the transfer case AND the rear of the transmission? I am guessing the 4l80 might be different. I am running a 6l80 and it has a seal in the rear. My 241 has a seal in the front and the adapter runs dry. I would have assumed the 4l80 and 231 would have been the same but perhaps not.
