First of all: “The media” is not an entity.
It goes without saying that fundamentalists do give arsenal to the likes of those epitomised by 'Clit Eastward' maven of Hollywood( the tentpole, feature-film maestro) - of course it's ludicrously, maliciously, and viciously exaggeration.
Doesn't that away from the fact that wild Philosophical distinction is there.

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakāh; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. I am never one for investigating politics, but it is really eye opening to see what people of the Muslim faith have to go through on a day to day basis. Riz has always been an inspiration to me since I saw him in Nightcrawler, and I do believe that what he is doing is truly using his platform and his voice for good. They want to normalize that part and think that’s ok, and the part where the women was fighting an invading enemy force in her land is supposed to be bad?

Other sexes are there, and if you're born a homosexual etc, theres nothing wrong with it. The problem is in practicing homosexuality and endorsing it as it is a worldwide phenomena. It's not, the scale is infinitesimal. Homosexuals have their rights, theres nothing wrong in being one. The problem is not Kumail doing these stereotypical roles is that these are the only kinds of roles available to him which illustrates the structioneral problems in hollywood which Riz Ahmed is talking about. and the solution to that is to encourage more muslim writers, and directors and for muslims to empower themselves to create their own projects just like Kumail did when he made The Big Sick. Yes he is telling his own life story and he is basically playing himself in the movie but at least he is not playing another characture or stereotype. He didnt abandoned his religion for his career. which is hard specially when your career is in Hollywood. He walked the hard road for holding his faith and doing what he love. As an atheist I'd like to add to this. It's not just fictional depictions of Muslims but real life as well.
During the 2000s we were inundated with fears about suicide bombings in the media, and as a teenager, hearing the fear get hyped up while seeing angry aggressive Muslim groups at home and abroad baying for blood was an unnerving thing to witness. What made it worse was that the Muslims brought forward on TV were usually either terrorist supporters, or inept community leaders who often came across as pompous, self-righteous, who sometimes subtly seemed to support Islamist terrorism and always were blaming everyone else for everything. This left me a very negative impression of Muslims, made worse when a distant cousin of mine was murdered by ISIS.
As an adult however, I did a community woodland project at work with a group of Muslim boys and the local imam. They were some of the nicest kids I'd ever encountered. And with the Imam - a very jovial and warm-hearted chatterbox - came the local Muslim women who cooked some spicy rice and onions for us, and it occurred to me that this was probably common practice in Muslim communities like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc, that perhaps it was common for such places for the locals to greet guests like this. (I could be wrong about this idk, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was true.)
Another change of pace was when I began a casual intimate relationship with a Muslim girl (still ongoing), a very beautiful and talkative girl, very independent regarding her sexuality (like the girl in ladyparts here but without the face veils) but also very kind and understanding and willing to listen to me when I talked about being bullied at work.
It struck me how blatant the contrast was between the warm-hearted, generous and friendly people I'd encountered, and the yahoos and weirdos wheeled out onto the media.
