I just finished the film. It by no means was perfect but my god- Riz was a revelation. Why is it the most fantastic actors have to struggle and toil for years before their brilliance is realized while every random mediocre actor gets recognized immediately and gets every single project under the sun? After SOM, Riz has the potential to be one of the all time greats. That is, if Hollywood continues to let diversity thrive and actors like Riz the acclaim they deserve. What a masterclass act. His pain was so palpable I started fearing for my own hearing! Excellent sound design and such a great interview from the lovely Joaquin Phoenix!

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I’ve been watching Riz for the last decade and always thought his career would just be limited to playing the indian/south Asian dude in random indie projects even when I knew he had the potential and talent to do projects that would be greater and would suit his brilliance. Finally, Hollywood looked past his ethnicity and Darius Marder came along and here we are with Riz getting Oscar buzz! Joaquin has always been one of the greatest actors of all time so I’m just delighted to see both of them together. He’s one of my personal favorites

    • @Jay23445

@@Jay23445 I think it’s taken him a while to get a role like sound of Metal because of his ethnicity but his one performance in the film in my opinion cemented him as an actor with a great range. He goes through almost every human emotion possible. Obviously, Joaquin is in a different league, but I think the majority of work Riz has done has gone unnoticed by audiences because they fall under a niche category where he plays an Indian/Pakistani character and not many people watch those movies. I think his growth as an actor will be phenomenal

    This movie really impacted me.
The ending scene when Ruben is sitting down just listening. The way he hears things.
It is a great visual and audio to demonstrate how I hear certain sounds. Due to a medical condition and the side effects of medications that affect my hearing and focus.
The first time I watched this movie with my mom and we watched the ending of the movie, I told her “this is how I hear things”. She was amazed “I had no Idea.”
I felt so relieved and grateful that she finally understood me. How and why I get stressed in certain situations. Those 2 minutes were a game changer for me.

In many ways ,how this Film was created sequentially...as real life...unfolds...it was a great way to do inner work.

I had never heard of Riz prior to watching "Sound of Metal" - I thought he was terrific. I think he's got a terrific acting career in front of him.

Hey Joaquin - man this was great!
I hope you do some more with other personalities. You can really tell your sincerity in wanting to know and you are clearly a fan too. Great questions - did you even write them down? It seemed like just a genuine spontaneous conversation between respected peers.
I'm a musician and been connected to the industry a long time and Riz and the movie got it right (especially the part about the wife "changed" direction) - glad he won the much deserved Independant Spirit award too. I also know a few people who are hearing impaired and it was a great representation of both sides of the experience. What I found really amazing though was the way the sounds were characterized throughout the experience and with only the necessary dialogue and intermittance to the absence of sound as we are taken along the journey and experience with him as the audience. As his ability to function grows so does the dialogue and sound clears up until he learned to be heard through the ASL only to almost throw it away on his "cure all" operation and what he thought it would be. Choices, mistakes, redemption, introspection. Very powerful especially when we consider the ASL is not present in a lot of reporting and other areas of life we take for granted even in this day when communication is "everything." We can do better.
Great movie and even better interview because you are genuinely inquisitive and interested in his process and translation.
Not a bad year for story and film given the state of the world - there may be hope yet...Chadwick literally left it out on the stage man. Brilliant and he was speaking truth through his character which given his circumstances must have been hard and definitely cathartic. It was for me. Riz and Gary Oldman have an oscar worthy performance but I think Chadwick will be the man of the hour and honor his example by winning posthumously.
The craft has never been better in spite of a Marvel/Disney Universe of distraction.
When you actors, writers and creators and crew "get it right" - there is a reason they call it that. Look at "Joker" (well done)
Hope you keep putting yourself out there with other interviews because it was really good.
    Thank you
Hope all is well with you and yours. Be well
We are our brother's keeper. Pay It forward
MAy peace be with you and your s always
