After the Great Disappointment, many Adventists believed any organization above the local church made you "Babylon." James White took nearly 20 years to change this definition to Babylon, meaning "confusion." This allowed the Church to organize in 1863. Until this time, anything done was done by some strong-willed people. The first identifiable change after we were organized was that a committee made the hymnal "Hymns and Tunes." James White printed all the previous hymnals. White's hymnals did not have tunes. But many of these strong-willed people became leaders and ultimately wanted to control what members could do instead of releasing members to work as God led them.
I think some of the emotional issues people have in accepting what Steve Daily has to say is, they probably were attacked much for being Adventist, they want to think that that persecution had to do with being real followers of Christ and if Ellen White is accepted for what she really is, then the people have to admit that persecution was just and that they were not suffering for christ but instead suffering for a false prophet unnecessarily. And I think that's one of the biggest issues they have is thinking all that suffering was for Ellen White.
