  • Hi guys,
    In today's video i will be testing some fanduct designs for the tevo tornado 3d printer.
    All the tests were done with the fans/blowers at 80% power and the same slicer profile was used for all the fanducts.
    All of the fanducts tested had a temperature drop (when the cooling fan kicked in) of 5 degrees except for the single blower fang design
    which had a drop of 7 degrees.
    The system being 24v rapidly recovered and kept the temperature stable through all the print.

    I just installed the Petsfang on my Ender 3, using the stock fans.
    The fang itself attaches now with M3 and nuts slide into it.
    Seems to work okay.
    If I didn't install this, I wouldn't have known Ender forgot to remove the two bolts used to align the hot end.
    A common QC issue apparently.

    I printed the fang one for the U30, one of the fangs heated up a deformed down, a different dual blower one ATM but will take into account what you said about the fan could cool the nozzle.

    I was curious if you had to adjust the fan speed any with the stronger airflow. Years ago I upgraded my Ultimaker Original from a single 40 mm fan to dual 50mm on each side. I noticed prints had great overhangs only on the side the fan was on. Well the CFM of the new fans were so powerful that it was requiring more effort to keep the bed and nozzle to temp. As a result, I had to lower (in slicer) fan to 50% to equal what the old fan could do.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      Yes, depending on the fanduct and blower used, you might need to reduce the flow %. It's important to choose the best fanduct and blower so that you have the best performance from the blower and the right air orientations from the fanduct.
      It's better to have more power and don't need it than need power and don't have.
      In any case, you should always adjust the flow % according to the model you want to print. Some models require less flow % and others require more.
      In your slicer, you can set the flow % by layers and this way you can have areas with less flow % and areas with more flow %.

    Thanks for the great video!! Would love to see an installation video on this if possible. I know you show how to disconnect the old, but adding in the new is where the trickiness comes in (especially for those of us not blessed with an understanding of circuitry)

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David,
      Thank you for your comment.
      When you say "how to install" are you referring on how to place the fanducts or how to connect them electrically?
      If you mean connect them electrically, then i can share that you just need to connect the new fan to the same port on the board as the stock one...or...just do like i did and cut the wire from the stock fan and connect the new one to the existing wires (red to red and black to black).

    • @davidhouk4617

      im going to be trying that once I finish the print sets that im currently working on. 3d settlers of catan. id love to be able to fully dial in my machine as I see some pretty spectacular results coming out of the facebook group.
      would a local hardware store carry the kinds of machine screws you used for this? as for the electronics, I can probably muddle my way through the connections after spending a month trying to get the ones for the BLTouch done right.
      Thanks again for the AWESOME videos. love watching them!

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David,
      FOr the winner model, you just need a couple of screws to secure the blower (or just use some zip ties while you dont find them). Those screws are easy to find. The others that secure the fanduct you can use the same ones from the stock assembly. For the pestfang it's more tricky...you need some small M2s and stuff. In his thingiverse page he mentiones the screws needed.

    Need to post what mods were needed to attach the blower (clips , connectors , etc) to the stock wiring , and where to get those as well. Other than that nice tutorial.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      You are right about that. I haven't mentioned what's needed because each designed explains on their thingiverse page. Nevertheless, the one i have chosen is the easiest as you can use the same screws to secure the fang. You only need 2 aditional screws and nuts to secure the blower. About the connectors, you can solder the wires directly if you dont plan to switch fanducts or get molex or JTX connectors. Any will work.

    • @Pew_Pew_Pizza
      @Pew_Pew_Pizza 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the fans did you splice the stock fan fire for it?

    • @TheSkyPod
      @TheSkyPod 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm new to this myself , but if you watch the video and at the 3:55 portion , is when he is removing the side fan , and I believe he cuts those 2 wires (pos and neg) and puts a molex connector on it , and the blower has a molex as well and is connected to that connector . If I am wrong , someone please correct me. You can put any 2 wire connector here , since I have a lot of JST connectors , I will be using those .

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alexander,
      You should use PETG or ABS for the fanduct, however, in certain designs (the ones that are not too close to the nozzle and heatblock), you can get away with PLA. All the models that you see in the video were made with PLA.

    To install the petsfang, you have to slide the piece on a little, rotate it to the right, then rotate it to the left to clip it on, it's not supposed to slide straight down from the top. You didn't have to modify it. =P
    Great video, though! Nice to see these different fanducts compared. =)

      By vents you mean the heatsink?
      All the models tested are for the stock hotend which includes the stock heatsink

      Hi,
      We are talking about different things.
      I was refering to the heatsink and you are referring to the blower.
      In that case no. I did not used the stock blower except for the stock hardware (first test).
      You have designs that use the stock blower (not tested) here:

      You probably have your blower running at 100%. Are you using the blower always on from start? Try to reduce the flow % especially in the initial layers and keep it off for the first 3 layers at least.

    Hi Ruiraptor, what is your method for quick connecting the blower (with female connector) into the cable casing? Did you install a male plug on the stock harness? Also, do you use caps on your blower to reduce whine and also maintain PWM control? Please share!

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul,
      For quick connecting the blower I simply cut the stock wire next to the blower (a few milimiters from the blower) and soldered a new connector.
      This way I don’t have to remove/install the entire cable all the way in the cable casing.
      Regarding the caps, I didn’t have to. The blower is silent from startup to full speed. And I used cheap ones from ebay.
      The loudest ones are the fans. The blowers are very soft when it comes to noise…at least mine are. :)

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      As i mentioned in the last minutes of the video, both have great performance. I have chosen the fang model (#3) due to the fact that it's much easier to install compared with #5. For the #3 you only need 2 screws to install the fanduct and you can use the same screws from the metal cover. As for #5, you need to buy one additional long screw to secure the center piece and some M2 screws for the sides.

    What about stock one with different end duct point www.thingiverse.com/thing:2437407 or. similar. I like the design of the original one because it is more secure and protects heatblock if. it falls out. I know it is possible to use secure options in Marlin but still.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Troy,
      I did print that one too but i noticed a few issues...
      One is that it is too close to the hotend so you need to print this one with ABS and not PLA.
      Second, it is too small and it takes out the visibility.
      And third, the air output is too small. With the fang models you have more output and therefore more performance.

    You missed my fanduct desigh; I call it Z-19
    www.thingiverse.com/thing:2911981
    It's an easy swap, using the CR-10's stock fans, no soldering needed; but my "fangs" are designed mindful of basic aerodynamics, which none of the fanducts I've seen so far seem to. Read about this in my notes on the Z-19 page. You should give it a try; I bet you'd get results almost as good with it as with those other designs featuring big blowers; but I will be designing an upgrade very soon, that will use a 5115 at the top and a 40-40-20 below.
    I designed the Z-19 for Creality printers, but with a bit of modification I could make it serve the Tevo Tornado as well.

    • @ruiraptor
      @ruiraptor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan,
      Thank you so much for sharing your design. I might test it soon. Also, if you get the new version working let me know.

    • @privateerburrows
      @privateerburrows 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for replying. The Z-19 is finished; it will stay as it is, at rev 1.5, unless some defect is reported. The new version will be called "Z-X"; it will be a separate thing; and will feature a 40x40x20 fan for the hot end; one, or maybe two, 5115 blowers for model cooling; and a few extra surprises... ;-) I have a page for it already; --but not much to see yet...
      www.thingiverse.com/thing:2991795
      But so, the Z-19 was, and is, meant to be an entry level modding fang thing, easy to swap out the box and in the print, no cutting or soldering; no new parts to order; even using the original screws.
