    It's such a weird coincidence that you'd post this. I'm an honours student at the moment studying software development and my honours project/application is centred around trying to see if people can be helped to achieve a 'flow state' through the use of music playlists generated by machine learning so I've been reading a lot of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's papers lately! Great video!

    • @karolinasowinska
      @karolinasowinska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah, that Jungian synchronicity! ;) Btw, that sounds like a super interesting project! What's the premise? Why would ML-generated playlists help people get into flow ?;) I'm really curious!

    • @AndyWTR
      @AndyWTR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@karolinasowinska Thanks! The idea is basically using machine learning to generate music playlists where the songs are arranged using similarity scores. This aims to stop the listener from being suddenly pulled out of their focus by a song that's suddenly too upbeat or jarring and hopefully aids the listener in attaining a flow state. Kind of like the lo-fi hip hop beats but automatically generated from any set of music.
      Not sure if that makes sense, or if it will even work but we will see!

    • @karolinasowinska
      @karolinasowinska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndyWTR Ohh I see! That makes sense! So I suppose you're taking some ideas from Csikszentmihalyi on how to measure flow! Sounds really interesting, good luck with the project! 😊

    I'd love a table of contents for this, so we could have "chapters" to review. Here's my estimation of those:
    0:00 - Intro
    2:22 - Key takeaway
    3:00 - The five conditions to happiness:
    3:09 - 1. Balance between challenge and skills
    5:39 - 2. Concentration
    7:59 - 3. Clear goals
    9:16 - 4. Clear feedback (/immediate feedback)
    10:36 - [sponsor message]
    11:40 - 5. Losing your 'self'
    14:13 - wrap-up
    14:48 - plugging the artists who contributed.
    15:03 - Thank you

    So I'm anxious, bored, and unhappy because I'm working on creative work thats not challenging enough for me and have little faith in people being receptive to it.. Yeah that sounds accurate to me. The woes of having bills. I'm the most happy when working on creative work not in my field that I'm making for myself because I work on stuff purely because it challenges me and it cant fail because I'm happy with whatever I end up making. Zero expectations around it, no desire to share it or have others like it. Its just for me and that makes me happy

    Unhappiness (in general, being unsatisfied with the current situation) is a mechanism born to give us an evolutionary advantage. If our prehistoric ancestors were always happy, they wouldn't have tried to improve their conditions, make inventions, they wouldn't have created a civilization. Like everything in us (my back can very well confirm) this mechanism is not perfect, can go wrong, it's not fine-tuned. but asking why we are not happy all the time is like asking why we have five fingers, it's grounded in evolution rather than a transcendental philosophical question.
    Of course at this point of history we can simply decide that we are not limited by these evolutionary constraints and so not tricked into being unhappy. fuck you Darwin, I'm gonna be happy

    • @karolinasowinska
      @karolinasowinska  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    About what you say at 4:30 related to being talented or not.. the problem with that is :
    how do you really know whether you are not talented or just need more time to get the trick ? People don't have the same experience, don't have the same background. It's normal for the learning curve to be different at first.
    To be honest, I think people should stop thinking about being "talented" or whatever .. To be good at something you just need to work hard and be passionate about it (unless you are really aiming to be in the top 99.9% of this something). If you enjoy something, you shouldn't give up because other seem better than you. (my personal opinion of course)

    • @karolinasowinska
      @karolinasowinska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see what you mean, although I'd say that sometimes it's quite apparent from a very young age if a person has an affinity for numbers, or perhaps artistic predisposition. That's the "talent" element, but obviously, talent alone is meaningless!

      @@karolinasowinska I think it's the opposite, science has shown us our limitations to an extreme degree and how insignificant we are and how little we can actually explain purpose and meaning in the universe through the limits of science. You hit the nail on the head at the very end where you seemed to realise that it only matters when something is permanent, temporary happiness is just that, being happy for the moment is like building a sandcastle on the beach and expecting it to be standing in the morning. Religion is about permanence. And yes I kept the term vague rather than pushing you into any specific religion because I feel they all share some common features and you would find the right one for you in the end but the search is up to you. Religion and permanence go hand in hand in the same way that atheism and impermanence do. Materialism/empiricism is not an end in itself, if it was, then by now it would already have solved the problem of not being able to find meaning without permanence.

Without confounding stressors, it's meaningless. Sure, you may achieve momentary happiness, but you can do that with anything.
