Yea, only Rae'chel will says "that technique is too much effort", and then write an incredible rap to explain the easier way she found to get the results she wanted 😂
Oh my god, the amount of effort for this entire video, and I'm not even talking about the first set of tiles... Please, never change. 10/10. Though, one technique I've often seen is to use stretched baby wipes as a stencil and airbrushing on them (or with spray cans), it saves so much time compared to manually painting the marbling...
Ahaha thank you for your acknowledgement and compliments! And yes I've seen that technique as well! There are plenty of those tutorials available, and turns out, there's a reason why that method is popular... 😅
Self-adhesive shelf liner comes in marble patterns, is glossy, easy to cut and...self-adhesive. Or, if you don't need/want glossy, go to your local home-improvement store and get free flooring samples. So many of them are actually textured like stone. Easy to cut - some are thicker so you might consider using a craft knife as opposed to scissors.
Amazing. The irony of lamenting about the high effort required to hand make marble tiles...done in a high effort rhyming musical number. This unexpectedly made my day!
What I've used is, well, self adhesive, vinyl, floor tiles from the hardware store. They already look like marble and are dirt cheap to buy...needed some recently, but the tiles are now about forty-nine cents each and cut rather easily. Adding a bit of glue to it when attaching it to the base tile works really well there. My tiles aren't magnetized though, mainly because mine are from a pretty massive stock of laser cut higher quality plywood to start with. As a side note, for painting marble, some of the things that tend to make it look a lot better is for later layers in it, to swap the white out for a metallic pearl...and you can boost the glossy look with a light coat of a gloss or semi-gloss spray. I've used those tricks for terrain and basing that's intended to be marble.
Ooh these are some excellent tips all around, especially for the painting. I tried contact paper but didn't think to look for something thicker like vinyl. Now to find a time machine so past me can get the message...
That was the first digital craft tutorial ever that was enjoyable to watch! Thanks for taking us on your journey. I’m glad I’m not the only one that obsesses over all these details. Really neat project and all your iterations looked great.
Your creativity is off the charts. I can't believe how much work you put into your videos. These techniques are great. I love your acetate-on-UV-resin trick, and honestly love that you came up with an optimized method, too. Bravo!
I think the printing route is the best for gaming application. You can also get a a marbled look with paint a lot faster than hand painting by using a dust cloth as a mask and your airbrush. Base in one colour, take a dust cloth and pull it apart until you have a good fibrous (but still cohesive) mask, lay it on your base colour, spray in your alternate colour. Repeat with multiple colours or same colour and different opacities until you have what you want. Probably not as good as printing, but the marble effect can be used on 3D objects too.
Love the look of your tiles, really well done. If you want a bit of a quicker method you could always try the dryer sheet/ cotton ball/ baby wipe method. Personally I prefer using dryer sheets, its a bit less work. Basically you take a used dryer sheet, stretch it out a bit and tape it to a sheet of plastic card, then give it a spray with whatever shade of grey or black primer you want. If the dryer sheet is tight enough to the plastic card, it'll block some of the spray paint, leaving a sort of marbled effect behind. I'd suggest sealing the plastic card once you're done, just to protect it from scratching.
Im in the beginnings of making a giant, sunken mausoleum for my dnd campaign, and I’ve been messing around with making different styles of marble tiles for the past few days. I can’t wait to try this out. 🤠
Woohoo! Glad to be of service. Also have a look through the comments for other ideas. Lots of people are giving some great recommendations in case stuff in the video doesn't work out for you haha.
Great video! I admire your desire to stick to your project. The final product was pretty impressive, though I def don't have the patience to go through what you did. Thanks for your efforts!
I didn't include it, but I did do this at first. The acetate ends up warping around the outsides from the UV resin hardening making it unusable for future squares, so it's totally up the crafter which route to take!
Wow! This video was awesome! Thank you so much for all your hard work and effort puzzling this out and then putting together this amazing video. You are truly incredible.
After all these years on YT, this is my first comment. And those last 2 minutes made me write it ! On a practical note, you had the question "Am I cheating ?" The answer will always be a big YES. But hear me out, all thoses creations are made by faking the look of what you recreate. Either be crafting, drawing/painting, 3D making or any other creating fields. You wouldn't carve out little bricks out of stones to make small floors for your minis to walk on, would you? In fact it's all about what you aim to achieve : "I want to do it all by myself", "I want it to be cheap", "I want to spare time". Anyway, keep it up with the good content ! 👍
The results is amazing, but definitly the prints one is the best option, less suffer!!! As a programmer, if the results is cool in both, choose the efficient method (and a great song, i can't stop laughing, keep creating, youre amazing!
Love the detailed accounting of your process, and the ending was awesome! Have you ever considered skipping the foam tiles altogether, and using instead vinyl floor tiles? The come in a dizzying range of colors and patterns, from wood to rough stone to polished marble. Many big DIY stores like Lowes and Menards will sell individual 12"x12" or 18"x18" tiles for around a dollar or so.
This would be a huuuuge consideration for me if I start scaling up my projects! Especially if I can make parts level with my pre-existing tiles. Thank you for the compliments!
This is awesome and hilarious! And well-timed, since I've been struggling with getting a good marble texture for several days now. Several folks in the comments have mentioned the "baby wipes stencil" method, which I've been trying and have had zero success with. This looks like something I might actually be able to pull off...
Thank you!! And that does sound well-timed! I've seen loads of videos with that technique, so I thought I'd offer something different. Good luck with it!
What a great video, didn't expect an educational rap when I clicked but I'm far from disappointed. Been trying for a good marble tile for a while! Fingers crossed for a good wall to go with them eventually!
Haha thank you! I'm glad it didn't disappoint then 🙃 We'll see how the video does, but I can foresee the walls being something downloadable I add to Patreon in the future!
I worry for you! This is an insane and insanely brilliant video. I think you may have missed your calling as a gangster rapper. Best modeling video I've seen in ages ❤
On overhead projector print pages reverse paint your marble Gray line thin white thicker grey, thin white, thickest grey now white till opaque. Flip, cut, stick. Perfect flat and easy to cut and set. Also no special tools or safety equipment. Have fun.
I don't think it would overall be faster than your gloss-painted printing that you ended up with, but if you didn't want to go the uv resin route for getting a smooth finish, you might have success with a spray-on sand-able lacquer. Spray, dry, sand to remove surface texture (where it's already pretty smooth, you could likely get away with just buffing it with some steel wool), then spray second coat. It should be pretty hard and durable by the end, and shouldn't require the multiple days of drying that the pva method took. It may even work being done *after* the tiles are assembled, so you don't have to do each square individually (just make sure to mask off any exposed foam when spraying). Important to note, this is theoretical knowledge - I've used lacquer in woodworking, and expect it would work in this situation, but haven't tried it.
Thank you for the insight! I did consider some sort of thicker finish either by brush-on or spray can and it does in theory sound like it would work. It may be something to try in the future if I ever have the will to try this project again 😂
Awesome video! So glad found you and with the tiles idea - so many thoughts on where to use it!! I might end up suing it for part of a table idea I was tossing around for epic 40k!!
Amazing. What a piece of art that one tile is! I do wonder if it would be easier to actually cut grooves in a real tile that looks like marble. I mean obviously thats a bad idea... but considering the effort to make one tile using the madness method... i think it might be easier to work with actual tile 😂😂😂
So you're going to continue creating songs for each DIY, and then release an album of the collected songs, right? RIGHT!?!? 🙂 Fabulousness! The tiles, the files, the song, the haircut - this video is like a piñata: start play and all the awesomeness comes spilling out! Also, from now on I'm telling anyone who inquires about my religion/spirituality that I'm an adherent of the Path of Cringe. 😛 Do we have enough principles for an Eightfold Path of Cringe? ;-)
So about the gloss varnish route... I was able to replicate a marble like statue by layering gloss varnish over the same kind of paint job. You just have to make sure you apply it evenly
This video is awesome! 😂 when you start the rap part I was like wtf ! U R really fun! 😊 . Back on the crafting topic: I hate marble. It is just too much time consuming considering the actual use. I mean: how many times you need marble tiles while playing? I actually did it only for an altar top. For tiles (like 1 tile...) I just use 1inch actual tiles ( small marble like pieces are used for the inner part of jacuzzis some times).
Thank you! Am I fun if I try hard to be? 😂 But yes! I'm seeing lots of nifty suggestions for how to do it more efficiently, so if nothing else: I am learning :P
Great result! But the fiddly, difficult prototype looked SO good. Did you consider urethane spray as a finish option? That UV resin and acetate method looked amazing but also nerve wracking.
I know! It does look SO nice. A couple of people have recommended trying that as an option, so if I ever drum up the will to try again, I may give it a go.
I was not expecting the sing/jam thing. honestly, amazing! did you need to cut the acetate to the exact size of the tile if it was just to flatten it? doesnt matter I suppose snice the print out worked best. good job. great video!
Thank you, thank you! I didn't include it, but yes when I cut a bigger square of acetate, the outsides end up warping as the UV hardens, making it unusable for future tiles. So I agree, the print ended up being best :D
I mean, if you're gonna cheat, cheat hard: Just get a roll of peel and stick marble contact paper (like wall paper, but for counters) at about 7 bucks a roll.
Love the song, it looks amazing. umm, I just have to ask, why not print a pattern, lamenate and cut the squares? small a4 lamenating machines are like.. 30$, and lamenating sheets can be acquired at any hardware store
Thank you!! Also lamination is a decent alternative! I was just being super picky in that laminated sheets sometimes still have a minorly bumpy/wavy surface, so I had written it off in my head early.
@@raecheldoes Ahh I see, I would recommend trying it, should work wonderfully with a solid laminating machine. I've used it for cards and what not and if done well shouldn't have any flaws
A poor man's lamination method is to just put packing tape over it. You only have one shot to make it adhere in the right way and there's like a 50% chance in my experience that it doesn't align with edges properly or leaves creases or whatnot but it's cheap so you can potentially just try it until you succeed!
That was great, but it was really hard to follow the steps of the “easiest” way because the rap lyrics and video footage were so fast. I would love to see how you did that without having to watch it 6 times to catch all of it.
It might just be me.. But my first instinct is to buy marble vinyl tiles, cut in to tiny squares and use.. Am i being crazy here? It's even more convenient where i live since you can get a sample piece (single tile usually) for about $2.. Which would make.. well 12x12 tiles so 4 of the 3x3 (most tiles are at least 1 square foot if not larger), so for about 10 dollaridoes you can make quite a lot.. And they are completely glue-able, since that's what your supposed to do with them.. just to the floor and not to a D&D tile..
@@raecheldoes brain farting here; could try an acrylic paint pour for the marble on a thicker sheet of styrene then cut that into squares re arrange the pattern for the tile look and gloss varnish spray..... IDK!
Rae'chel I always loved your videos but... USE GLOVES AND MASKS WHEN USING UV RESIN!!! IT IS TOXIC TO THE TOUCH AND TERRIBLE TO BREATHE IN!! It's an organic polymer which makes it one of the few chemicals that can penetrate your blood-brain barrier! Overexposure can lead to respiratory issues as well as developing an overt allergic reaction to the material. This makes it important to wear gloves, a mask, potentially eyewear, and working with a window open. What you did in the video wasn't overtly dangerous as a one-time project, but it can be over time if done enough. I'm mostly concerned about some new crafter seeing your video and trying something more ambitious with UV resin. ((UV resin is perfectly okay to handle after it is cured though)) I *really* recommend adding a disclaimer citation, or reuploading with a segment that mentions PPE. 🙏
I did say it with a joking tone, but you're right! I added a card with a link for more info and it's at the top of the description now. Thank you for the emphatic reminder!
that menu select sound sent me to my happy place AND THAT WAS JUST THE START OF THE MADNESS
LOL. That is an accurate description of what happened to my brain through the process 😂
What in the 1980s educational rap did I just watch. Not only is the song incredible, but thank you for putting this much effort into the edit. 🎉🎉🎉
Yea, only Rae'chel will says "that technique is too much effort", and then write an incredible rap to explain the easier way she found to get the results she wanted 😂
Ahhh!! Thank you for the high praise! It means a lot coming from another creator 🙌
Wake up babe, another pun + terrain tutorial just dropped!
Edit... OH MY GOD THAT ENDING.
😂
Fun video! I cheated and bought marble shelf paper from Dollar Tree. Cheap, easy, and looks good enough for gaming.
Yes! That's a great alternative, honestly.
This was, by far, the most enjoyable YT video i watched today.
I second this comment
Woooo! I praise your high praise 🙌
3 hours per tile, plus the hours spent producing and filming an original song about the creation of said tile... Dedication 10/10.
I am nothing if not dedicated, so I'm glad it comes across 😎

I like your wet blending technique. The added music video is amazing.
Waiting for glue and paint to dry is one of the hardest parts of crafting.
haha, these never fail to entertain. Thanks for the effort you put into these.
I'm stoked you think so! Thanks for your support 🤗

Thank you, thank you!
This is utterly amazing.

That ending!!! 😂
I was blown away by the end of this, well done.
Then mission accomplished, I say! (Thank you)
If you cut the acetate bigger than the tile then you can easily peel it off without struggling...

Such great content and editing lol! one of the few channels that keeps me on youtube.
Excellent tips. Seems like quite a journey from start to finish. Glad you were able to 'rap' up the project nicely in the end.
Thank you as always! It did give quite a nice *finish* haha.
that was sick! I listened to the song 3 times!!
Ahahaha I'm delighted you enjoy it that much!
Thanks! I've been struggling to make proper marble for terrain. This video is exactly what I needed.
You're welcome! I'm glad to be of service :)
A new video! I'm floored!
I hope it slabs!
Wow! This video was awesome! Thank you so much for all your hard work and effort puzzling this out and then putting together this amazing video. You are truly incredible.

Excellent video and tutorial. Thanks for sharing the longer processes that brought you to the simple solution...and the song was pretty cool, too.
Thank you haha. Deeefinitely lessons learned.
Came for the tips, stayed for the dope beats!
That was SO GOOD!!! omg I love this channel so much 🥹 thank you for all your hard work!! That ending was so so so good omg 😍
Aaah thank you for your continued support and high praise! I'm super happy to entertain ☺
your videos continue to level up! and now the crazy good songs with all the rhymes!!
Ahaha thank you! 'Tis a journey.

Ahaha I'm glad you agree and that you enjoyed the song 😄
that was awesome. I love your videos so much and the song at the end was actually amazing
Thank you thank you! I'm super happy to entertain :P
I also caved and got some UV resin this week, now I feel like I’m in good company 😂 - awesome video!
Great minds purchase alike! And thank you ☺
I did not expect the awesome song at the end! What a wonderful surprise! I am a long time viewer and subscriber. Love your stuff😂
Hehe I'm glad it was a good kind of surprise! Thank you so much for your continued support--it really keeps me going!

Printing seems the way to go, for sure. Great how-to v how-maybe-not-to
I love puns, so I'm always here for those. But the rap! So good! Much fun 👏
Hehe thank you! And yes, sometimes it takes figuring out what not to do to take the wiser concession.
Its been a while. Nice to see a new vid!
It has! It's honestly nice for me too haha.
WOOT!!! 🥰🥰🥰 So awesome, all of it!!!
Loved it. All of it. Your videos are inspiring!
(Also, yes, please use gloves when working with resin. Very important!)

im always so excited to see your miniature videos! youre so funny and edit ther extrmely well
I rate this video 20 out of 10. impossibly fantastic. the song!!!
That's like an A+++++ and the validation monkey in my brain is pleased hahaha. Thank you thank you!!

wasn't expecting a rap video, but I'm all for it
Honestly, when I first started the craft, I wasn't either 😂 (Also thank you!)
Pretty cool! thanks for the video
yeah, you got me. I'm subbing on patreon. your channel doesn't miss
I like how the thumbnail implies that anything you work on is a failure.
They're all just learning experiences
I totally agree with you, honestly. The thumbnail is more so my appeal to the algorithm gods ahaha 🙃
I love it. Amazing ending hahahaha!!
Haha thank you, thank you!
Every time I think to myself "I when is Rae'chel gonna post" you post 🕺
Maybe you're a wizard who summons me 🤔

I did not know you were a bard-iglio! Seriously, what can't you do? 👍
Ahaha thanks for your continued support! Jack of all trades is definitely what I'm aiming for ✌

Did you try the cheesecloth method? Was wondering how it compares (it’s what I mostly saw on TH-cam before this)
Okay, the CRINGE was so unexpected... FFS 😄😄Then you DARE slap us in the face with a song?! Holy moly Rae'chel this vid slaps... 👏
LOL yes. Yes I do dare.
Its a banga
😎
This video is a 10/10, but it made me think I might just buy some real marble tile and get someone with a saw because it would be easier :P
Valid. (And thank you ahaha)
A poor man's lamination method is to just put packing tape over it. You only have one shot to make it adhere in the right way and there's like a 50% chance in my experience that it doesn't align with edges properly or leaves creases or whatnot but it's cheap so you can potentially just try it until you succeed!
I have definitely done this before and enter a panicked rush every time right before touchdown LOL. Thanks for the alternative suggestion!
That was great, but it was really hard to follow the steps of the “easiest” way because the rap lyrics and video footage were so fast. I would love to see how you did that without having to watch it 6 times to catch all of it.
That's fair! I do have them written out on my Patreon if you'd like to access them that way!
I think you're on to something here since I've seen a few people suggest this now. I might have just tunnel-visioned a little too hard haha.
I like the dry wet wipes technique for marble, either sprayed or sponged. Otherwise I over think it and then decide it's not random and stuff.
Fair! I figured there are enough of those tutorials available, and for good reason!
@@raecheldoes brain farting here; could try an acrylic paint pour for the marble on a thicker sheet of styrene then cut that into squares re arrange the pattern for the tile look and gloss varnish spray..... IDK!
How are you so amazing?
((UV resin is perfectly okay to handle after it is cured though))
I *really* recommend adding a disclaimer citation, or reuploading with a segment that mentions PPE. 🙏
I did say it with a joking tone, but you're right! I added a card with a link for more info and it's at the top of the description now. Thank you for the emphatic reminder!
Thank you!
