I get used supplies and make use of discarded material. It’s easy to hoard when you work that way so I’m learning to be honest and toss items away so I have a better living situation. Constant battle.

this is a good video... this is a really good rant. i'm too tired to have proper thoughts about it right now, but i agree with the things you're saying ^^; it feels like nowadays people are so obsessed with the idea of being/doing something over actually going out and LIVING it. it's all just people buying the accesories to feel like they're living a fantasy

Especially when the bar for entry for being an artist is fairly low. It's something all of us can do. But it's really up to you if you thrive in your medium. It's nothing you can buy

The fact that this is a sentiment that is not expressed enough speaks volumes of the extent in which brands are given an inflated importance at times.
The first time I've heard a similar sentiment, it was before art hauls became a trend: it came from the art school I went to many years ago. Out of all the art schools I knew of where I live, this one made a point in offering flexibility regarding supplies, because they knew most of us were poor, and one of their values was social responsibility. At that time, other schools were insistent in asking their students to buy specific brands, not really empowering students into considering intuitive ways to choose materials in the way this art school did. (I hope this has changed nowadays, it's been years without knowing what's going on after I left.)
Actually, thanks to your video, I could realize the mechanisms of consumption behind art hauls have some similarities to the mentality pushed in art schools with a traditional outlook; the only difference being, one is motivated by FOMO, the other, motivated by preservation and some degree of elitism. In the case of FOMO, I can also see how some people get it as a way to follow the way of "those pros who could Make It", there can be a certain imposter syndrome motivating these consumption choices, the "not feeling like a real artist unless I get this or that supply" kind.
This was a much needed video, thank you so much!

So many people need to take a breath and think if they really need something yk. I've accumulated a good collection that I'm proud of, but it's taken MANY years to get here (my watercolour palette is actually my mum's old one, things been with me through thick and thin.) :) I definitely agree with your point abt the supplies being seemingly more important than the artist. It scares me actually how obsessive these trends are.

great conversation for us artists to have. I suggest scouting 2nd hand stores for art supplies, i’ve found good oil/soft pastels and coloured pencils. It’s also a good way to test out/ experiment with those supplies without worrying about „wasting them“ :) xx

also reminder that you can get art supplies secondhand and resell / give the ones you dont use ! there isnt always the need to pay for new expensive supplies. For example you can get alcohol markers for rlly cheap secondhand, since it seems to be something a lot of ppl compulse buy (got mine for 5 euros ... there was 160 markers in the deal)

i loved this so much.... and its what ive been trying to control myself with too... one thing that helps is listing everything down that was bought for art so I can get that satisfying feeling of using something up and mark it off the list. Makes me be more aware that i actually have this stuff good enough to last me more months and can remember it when i get the urge of impulse purchases.
That said, mech pencils are always my go to with how cheap they can get and its refillability.

As an artist myself i find myself so much more comfortable using a pencil and a paper than using all the expensive stuff cause when i use my expensive art supplies (which arent a lot btw cause mom said no) i start feeling like it important to use every single one of them and i feel bad for the money mom spent of them when i realise i dont need them

This is a really good rant that also came at a perfect time for me.
A rule I try to follow and sometimes fall out of when consumerism sucks me in is basically the equivalent of the phrase "too broke to buy the cheap stuff" I use a $30 mechanical pencil because it makes me happy and more comfortable, but if I had to replace it all the time not a chance. If you only need one of something that will last forever, then get one that you like, because you only need one and will be using it for a long time (like with paint brushes). A lot of cheap stuff works just as good as the expensive stuff if you're skilled (not that expensive stuff warrants better skill, but you know what I mean).
    thanks for the rant :)

    a good rant typa vid
some thoughts i've had as well
I love me good ole pen and paper. the simplest tools bring me the biggest joy, shit u can even draw on dirt! Art is crazy versatile. I think my art in total's like 300 bucks too lmao, and damn it was a bitch to get there! I do feel like it's good to progress and move up but nit if that comes at the expense of you and your art.
Good stuff, homie! Wish you luck on your art journey!
Also, bug eater? i hardly know'er

As another poor artist from another country I agree mostly, you can do so much good art regardless of the materials
The art comes from the skill, not the tools
And I like to prove that as well
But what I don't agree is in blaming capitalism, I know that's what schools and social media tells your to think, but capitalism allows to have cheaper products
The problem is totally on consumerism and big greedy companies pushing FOMO along with content creators
Don't make the mistake of thinking "greedy" and "consumerism" are synonyms of "capitalism"
It's a lot more complex than that, but good video tho
