You do not get stretch mediated hypertrophy from emphasising the stretch on movements. The stretch supposedly yielding more hypertrophy on certain movements and "stretch mediated hypertrophy" are not the same thing.

I had the same epiphany with kneeling cable column double front bicep curls with high set cables. I like these for a lot of the same reasons, but they also add stretch of short head specifically and also they place the long head in the special test paytern we use in physical therapy for SLAP tears. Which if performed with appropriate loading can build tissue tolerance to the most common types of labrum tears in lifters. For competitors this can also build resilience for this pose

  • @banntaylor7323
    @banntaylor7323 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +4

I’ve been doing these since the first time you recommended them Dr. Mike, but there is just one problem with these, if you’re a taller guy, you can struggle to stretch at the bottom, because your hands will hit the floor before you stretch your arms fully. But other than that, they’re absolutely awesome. And lately I’ve been doing a superset of over the head skull crushers and laying curls and it’s absolutely brilliant, since it takes so little time and both your biceps and triceps (especially long head) will get cooked. Just one tip, if you’re trying these for the first time, make sure you’re using very lightweight dumbbells, because the stretch is very big and you don’t wanna injure yourself. So go light and do more reps and you’ll feel your biceps for the next 2-3 days lol.

Dr Mike PLEASE read this and try it. I have been doing it for about 2 months and have never had bicep pumps like it. Do the lying cable curl, but put something behind your upper back to give you the tiniest of inclines. I do it on my squat rack with an empty bar against the front posts and curl from the low row attachment. It feels sooo much more stable and natural than laying down flat.
I usually do biceps 4 days a week. I can’t anymore because doing it this way makes them sore for 3-4 days in a row. It’s amazing!

My arms start behind me at the beginning and it's a crazy amount of stretch, and I don't have to worry about getting dragged anywhere or having to engage my legs to stay in place at all.

If you can’t understand that the key component is to train the bicep in ways that challenge the muscle in the lengthened position while avoiding unnecessary posture balancing fatigue than you’re toast mate.
Anyway i think it’s good advice. Especially for beginners, getting it right from the start is invaluable!

At the time I was hitting a plateau and my biceps routine was a bit stale, a lot of hard work with minimal gains. Three months later I have put a 10lb gain on my standing curl and added a bunch of reps to my chin ups and pull ups. This exercise is torturous, in a good way. Thanks

This makes absolute sense. Reminds me of gymnasts and how big their biceps are, whilst they don't do any direct bicep training via curls they seem to do a lot of straight arm holds, front lever, back lever etc. When you demonstrate lying flat on the bench with arms fully stretched it looks very similar to back lever. I imagine that extreme stretch is where you get "bang for your buck". There's my two pence, I may be chatting a load of bollocks and someone will surely let me know I'm an idiot.

Yup, I've been doing these for around 6 months now, the growth is remarkable, I still get sore especially on lower weights higher reps, there is no joint discomfort whatsoever.
For those who want a slightly different perspective on these types of exercises, u're basically combining eccentric and isometric exercises into 1 super exercise. In my personal opinion, being a random on the internet with no academic education on the matter, isometric exercises are the absolute kings of building strength, and eccentric exercises are undisputed when it comes to growth. When u curl in a lying down or inclined position, ur arms are being isolated, ure slowly letting gravity win on the downswing (eccentric), and then ure holding just before u get to the most stretched part of the rep (isometric) before curling back up. U dont need any machines, any tools, u can do this on the side of ur bed with a bucket of water if u wanted to, and there is no better form of curl than this.
Applying this logic to every other exercise will yield the best result every single time.

The overall message I have been taking from Dr. Mike and Nippard for the past year has been, load at stretch is most important. I've tried to incorporate this into all of my training; I've gone down in weights to achieve this. Has been huge for my continued development. I have been doing the lying down dumbbell curls ever since he first showed them months ago and they are amazing.

Those laying dumbbell curls that gave you the crazy stimulus are what we use in gymnastics except we keep the arms straight on the way up too.
Straight arm biceps work hits differently.

Added the lying curls after the first time I saw you do them in a video and 100% agree. I love these after a set of the free motion cable curls. Or, when the machine is occupied, I just do lying curls and end with a drop set, and easily the best stretch, pump, doms, etc that my biceps have felt in years.

Also, Scott curls. Maximum tension at the lengthened position of the short biceps head. And some isometric exercises the gymniasts do, also providing maximum tension at the lengthened position.

I like the preacher machine curl, or a cable curl with a straight bar holding elbows in front of you for the stretch. Anything with constant tension that takes the joints out of it, is going to work. The full range is important

I started using a rubber band on my barbell curls which has added progressive tension from the bottom of the curl increasing as you squeeze at the top. It seems to be working as I've put on half an inch in 3 months, a much quicker growth curve than previously. ✌️

As a gymnast, I do almost exclusively straight arm exercises and a heavy focus on isometric holds for my biceps with the exception of reverse grip pull ups.
    Straight arm chest flies
Maltese flies (like mike's laying dumbbell curls essentric motion)
    Cable cross raises
    Cable rear pull downs
    Straight arm overhead flies.
Gives gymnasts really long biceps. I personally hate curls because it always results in soreness straightening my arms the next day, where as straight arm work leaves a burn up closer to your delts.

I’d like to contribute two more exercises to the revolution. Seated incline Bayesian curls with the cables set at hand height and kneeling Bayesian curls with the cables set at standing shoulder height. Max tension at the lengthened end, huge stretch, and you don’t have to be standing.

I’m at 2:46 in this video and I’m very curious about what he’s gonna say. My most recent setup is an adjustable bench at about 45 degrees and locking my elbows in to primarily focus the tension on my bicep while following Dr. Mike’s advice on a slow eccentric and a pause in the stretched position. Seems to work well for me. Now back to the video to see what the revolution is.
Just finished the video and I am pleasantly surprised to find out that what I am currently doing is solid. Will have to try adjusting my bench a little further back and see how it works for me.

I’ve been getting amazing results using free motion but bring an angled seated bench so your back axial fatigue is taken out. The cable stretch at bottom is just insane and I’m at complete balance since my body is stable. I tried the lying bench barbell curl but did not like the fact my shoulders are also fighting for position. The freemotion + bench is absolutely in my opinion better. Highly recommend trying.

If you lay down to do cable bicep curls because the axial fatigue of curling (let’s be honest) 50-70 lbs is too much, then idk what to say to you. Honestly one of things I like most about curling is you can get a bit of glute and positerior stimulation when curling because the weight moves that little distance out in front of you

Jeff Nippard just released his video and he mentions you, and you guys seem to pretty much agree. His test showed that doing the stretched partial was just as effective as full range of motion. i think that means that most of the gains happen at the stretch, with probably diminishing returns at the full concentric range, which is what i believe you said to him.
