As an intermediate surfer trying to improve , filming myself has been the biggest factor. I put my phone in a tree to record my sessions when I can and even though it’s blurry I can still see what I am improving on and what I need to change. It’s helped me to surf in the pocket more and more and work on my flow. Awesome videos thanks for the motivation.
Nice breakdown. I remember crossing some weird threshold in a sesh back in my 20’s. Out of nowhere my take offs into well timed bottom turns into top turns (vertical surfing) became fluent and almost seamless (flow). Even though the waves weren’t great by any means I knew within myself that that was a huge progression milestone. I think you’re spot on: there’s little to no progression ‘database’ to refer to for surfers. Thanks for filling that void Brocky!
I'm 65 and just getting back into surfing. I was an expert riding the North Shore for many years. Working on my flexibility and paddle strength seems key to my progression. Be riding double overhead in a few months. Luckily I have been bodybuilding for the last 35 years, big time strong and low body fat.
Great Vid Kale! I watch so many surfing videos on TH-cam, but yours are by far the most informative and easy to follow. Very entertaining too! Look forward to joining a retreat at some stage in the future! Yeww
Oh so true! It can be brutal, but once recovered from the video reaction you really start to build well... and fast. Often it leads to doing less and lessens stress on a wave, leading you to surf better. I've done the same on river waves and it works. In music we do the same. "Why am i not sounding like the masters?"... recordings don't lie! Good stuff Kale!
Love your videos but I have a question! NO 1. Too early to be neutral off the bottom of the wave. 2:30 you say about pull early vs. delay. Does "pull it" mean pull the back hand and shoulder rotationally? Or pull what?
Love the video as always! I'm from Uruguay so my surfing is very irregular as the waves here. I would say i'm intermediate when waves are sketchy and advanced when waves are perfect. The unpredictability of a counterwave or a sandbar is fun, but hard to anticipate.
1. You surf horizontally instead of vertically 2. Your flow isn't quiet on point 3. The timing of your bottom turn is out of sync 4. You don't know that you're an intermediate surfer
Finally getting back into the waves in a week can’t wait…. Thx Kale , I loved Urban surf when I was home back in Melbourne for a couple months at the end of last yr, They are making a wave pool just outside of Barcelona, Spain in 2025/25 like urban surf … can’t wait
Great video, Kale, thank you very much for your insight, congratulations, very original content. I really like the comparison with the other surfers in the pool, especially the more advanced intermediated surfers. I struggle to understand your “surfer delays “pull” analysis at 2:32: I think the surfer on the right did everything right on that bottom turn, but I think he choose the wrong maneuver for that particular section. But as you say, most intermediate surfer don’t know they are intermediate. Hope you find good waves, wherever you are.Cheers!
Hey brocoli!!! Im just having a moment that i overcame the phase i barely catch 2-4 waves every session with my high performance boards. Now i can catch much more waves with less fear. i look for next steps and realize I don’t do much on waves but running away from the pocket. Gonna study with your content. Thanks for putting out great content out there❤ - will look forward to your courses.
Another good vid. I'm still suffering the pain from seeing myself on camera from the wave pool in Feb but it's helped loads with both motivation and progression. Thanks Kale!
@@KalesBroccoli yeah mate for sure! I'm just stoked I didn't feature on your "How to know you're still a beginner surfer" version. Making great progress though.
Good explanation. Although I feel like, just because you're not surfing vertical and throwing fins out and buckets of spray, you are a intermediate surfer. I think the "intermediate" also goes together with lack of experience. I know guys and girls who have been surfing for 20-30 years that don't surf really vertical, but they surf difficult spots, know where to sit, are aware of their environment, read conditions well and surf the waves good by doing necessary cutbacks and turns to get the most out of the wave. I wouldn't call them intermediate.
Nice man! I ride the 77 myself, love this board. I set up my camera on the sand (south coast of nsw, no thieves) and then review my 2 hours of surfing hahaha. Thanks for the tips helps a lot. What about tubes though? What would you call a bloke who can't really turn but charge 6/8ft barrels and make them? That's what crazy with surfing too, some get tubes, some do airs, I guess it's like skating too (ramp vs flat). Makes it hard to define a level. Cheers !
Watching yourself compared to pros. That's will allow you to understand. I can tell someone's level just by seeing how they paddle and adjust themselves as they paddle.
Nice video Kale, is it possible that a board with too much volume is holding back my progression? I've been surfing for 3 years now and i feel like i'm not improving anymore, i can catch wave easly but i can't surf as i would like to. I feel like my board doesn't responde to my body.. i'm 60kg and riding a 6.4 35lt
Hiya Kale... you seem pretty busy! Speaking of Urbnsurf Retreats and all they consist of... could you let us know when we can expect our video feedback files from the Feb 2023 Urbnsurf Retreat you ran???
Have watched your v videos for a while now since I started surfing, just got my own brand new 8’6 long board 2+1 finn set up. I have another pair of fins for the side bites as well and they’re substantially larger than the ones that came with the board. I’m wondering if there’s a difference and small side fins versus large side fins for a 2+1 set up
I've noticed over the years when I'm trying to fit a vertical turn in a fast moving wave, right after dropping in to an almost closeout and all the wave will allow me to get is one quick turn, I will often bottom turn too early to try to make it there before it breaks and will often get stuck at the top and float out the back...best guess is to paddle harder and drop in earlier?
Hey Kale, a question for the experienced/ advanced surfers; I notice less experienced surfers have a tendency to get in the way of other surfers, a lot of times this is avoidable. But do advanced surfers still encounter from time to time being the perpetrator of ‘being in the way’?
hi kale do you remember the boards you started off on like your beginner intermediate then the board your on now? just trying to get an idea of the boards people progress to.
after 20 years found out i am intermediate surfer. you rock. ! Cheers Kale! ;) extra question: what happens when i'm goofy on a skateboard and regular on my surfboard? it is quite strange, but that is the way it has been forever. how to practice one for the other with that switched stance?

I see that sharp eye has really become one of your top boards. Looks like it has also improved your surfing particularly ina high performance manner

He released his back arm into “the pull” too early and thus wasn’t able to use it to get his board going vertical up the wave face

Kale, I found this very helpful. I love the tips for intermediate surfers. You giving a lot of value!
Thank you
Glad it was helpful legend! Hope you’re doing great

Glad it helped!
hey kale! really enjoying your videos. What app do you use for your coaching in this specific video for example? cheers!
Final Cut Pro :)
i really hope i get a spot 2023 for your coaching! keep doing what youre doing mate!
I hope so too!

I’m finding it really hard to delay the pull. Breaking habits is hard!
Legend, love it 💯🤙🤙
Great content!
Kale question - do you still use the Sharpeye inferno quads as your everyday board?
I’m experimenting at the moment :) but that is a regular go to

Yes of course and it’s always a quick apology to the victim!

How are you brother i hope you're doing good i really need help from shopping honestly🚩🇬🇲🤞🏿

Thanks!!
Yeew my surf skate made it on the vid haha thanks bro!
You bet!
So you're saying if you filmed me, I'll probably find out I don't look just like JJF?
BTW, really good point on bottom turns. Get yourself a great bottom turn peoples. Drive off the bottom and the waves your oyster.
MAYBE !
Great stuff. Yep the vids definitely tell all lol
Thanks 👍
The most intermediate surfer is the one having the mediumest amount of fun

First Sign: you’re watching this
Woo hoo I'm expert
Be quite
ive got more signs than that
horizontal lines, no flow, bottom turn timing, and not knowing you’re intermediate 😂
Dangit I'm begginer intermediate
HA ...lot of surfers think they are way belter than they are .
We all do
This makes surfing sound like quantum mechanics. Surprising because some real stupid people are good at surfing.
1 sign I’m a kook: I can’t do any of these 4 things 😂
Yet!
