Awesome video !! Right what I’m trying to improve at the moment. You’re a legend kale. Back knee pointing forward and chin always in the same line with your front knee are tips I’ve also found very helpful when it comes to turns. Cheers
2 minutes in, Subscribed, rang the bell, liked the video, and watched with supreme excitement for finding my new surf mentor online. In one video you helped me up my game so much. Addicted. LoL
I’m from Valencia (Spain), I discovered surf in Byron Bay last summer. Still in my 7-8th session. Going from beginer to intermediate (I guess). Your videos just make me want to go living there 😄😓. Great vives you bring☀️
You have improved your surfing a lot yourself. I think training on surf skateboard was the key helping to transition and controlling into multiple turns without losing momentum.
Mate! The virtual surfing part of this vid when you explain the parts of the wave and what move should be performed on that particular part from your viewpoint is a game changer for me. You make it crystal clear. Awesome, thank you!
This video is just what the doctor ordered because I'm still working on getting down the line from the start. I'm starting to go down a line but towards the end of the ride but because of this video I'll understand how to be aware of what the wave is doing so I can start to move up and down the way vertically and thank you for this help.
Great! It is exactly what I need now! Any possibility to analyze the difference between different bodyshap surfers? Like a tall one to a short one? A thin one to a big one? Thanks so much! (I am a short type, like 164cm and 62kg)
Another awesome video!!! You really inspirer me with every video to get out there and try new things to take my surfing to the next level. I've only been surfing 9 months and your videos have really helped me progress. Hopefully I'll meet ya on one of your surf retreats soon.
Another great video Kale! Really liked the wave analysis and what you are looking at for deciding what kind of turn to throw👌 Looking forward to the next one!
I’m so glad you made a clip explaining this because this was exactly what I needed! I’ve been watching a lot of clips from others point of view surfing on a wave through gopro just to see what kind of turns they are doing on different sections. Mostly on small to medium waves. It helps as if I was there on the wave too. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of that! And maybe adding some of your failed attempts. Love your energy and vibes. Thanks again!
Kales Broccoli lol no biggie! If you get the chance you make a clip in the future on the best section to try to attempt an air rail grab? I would like to try it eventually! Thanks and stay safe!
Good video! Only the "physics" of the speed generation sounded quite voodoo. I can suggest looking at videos of skateboarders pumping half-pipes, they sometimes explain it quite well.
Hey Kale, thank you so much for all the hard work you put into your videos and tutorials. I've learnt to surf from your tutorials over the past 18 months and you've broken down every single step of the journey I always have a reference point to look back to for my current progression. Are there plans to release the longevity film online as well in the future? Would love to see it and being UK based it sucks not being able to make a screening!
Lots of useful analogies and mental models here. But in reality the thing that generates speed on a wave is your center of gravity moving from a higher point to a lower point (to a much lesser degree, the forward speed of the wave towards land plays a role. But since waves are sloped, being "higher" equates to being "further back" on the wave's path, so they're one and the same). All the compression and extension really amounts to is "jumping" up the wave and then riding down it. When done properly it looks smooth, like that speed is being generated from within the surfer's legs or something. But it's all just gravity. It's the same as pumping a skateboard on a vert ramp or a mountain bike on a pumptrack.
You're videos are always great! I surf from many years as a professionist, but I see that lots of things you never stop to learn. And you videos are very good to explain some technical things that sometimes can be very useful! ;) I get a question for you: I see many pros take off by put hands on the board, others grab the rails. I've try both but I feel more better with the seconds (for example Fanning is a famous one that do it). What you think about? Would you talk in a video?
Hiya! Thank you for the video! I have tried surfing a couple of times, I did a “surf camp” for a week in the UK like 6 years ago and was trimming along a green wave on a hard board by the end of it.. fast forward to last year and I went a couple of times in France with a foamie and only stood up now and then. The fitness levels have definitely declined! I’d be interested in the “surf retreat” you mentioned - I’m thinking of taking a year out from everything in a few months to travel and would love to give surfing another proper go. I’ve looked into surf camps in Bali and Sri Lanka, and luckily I’m still young enough for a working holiday visa for Oz so that’s also what I’m thinking of! If you could recommend any camps that do daily lessons and could do more than a month, or have a discount for block bookings (I’m thinking it’s something I’d like to give at least a good 3 month shot at). Any advice would be appreciated really! Katie :)
Kale - you are so professional. Feels like I know you soooo well. Watched moats your videos from South Africa. Keep it up. Can’t be easy. Thanks for helping up with some quality distinctions 👊🏻
@@KalesBroccoli this stage of video is very good, please make more if poss and again if possible could you breakdown very specific techniques for each type of turn etc. Ta
can you post more videos of you just paddling into waves (even if it misses). need some idea of positioning and when to attempt to paddle into waves, esp on steep ones.
In theory these all make great sense and makes me feel like I can nail it the next time I’m in the water but in practice it all just falls apart 😅 gotta get more of that practice in lol
Great job mate. Loved this one. Thought the Casey Neistat one was great also - lots of mileage in doing this for other surfers (both beginner and advanced). Keep up the good work :-)
One big thing i didn't hear mentioned was foot placement. Positioning is very different between a speed section and a turning section. Sorry if this was subscription level info 😉
Any tips on wetsuit selection coming into the cooler months in Oz? I usually wear a West wetsuit (3/2), but I'm looking at moving onto a more sturdy wetsuit. I've heard good things about Ripcurl Flashbomb Heatseeker wetsuits, but am worried about the loss of comfort and flex that other wetsuits have (West are great wetsuits in my opinion, just not very long lasting). Tips?
I have a question. I think I am at that point where I am popping up confidently, getting on my feet quickly 95% of the time. I have been riding a 7'6" and I want to continue to do so, but I would also like to try a shorter board to challenge myself a little. I am 5'10", 150 pounds. I mostly ride shore breaks and I stay away, for the moment, from waves higher than 6. So mainly 5 foot waves and smaller. What would be a good volume and dimensions to start trying a shorter board on summer waves? thanks!
hi Kales, been watching your videos. amazing job! I have one question for you, what advice could you give to a Surfer who´s regular in surfing and goofie in skate and snowboarding. By the way i´m 47 and im surfing almost 30 years... :) thanks cheers!
Thanks for all the help Kale 👍. I was just wondering, you’ve stated in a previous vid that you ride a 5.6 wraptor, how tall are you? And do you think the length is that important in short boards as opposed to volume?
dam bro I can surf 6ft and balance real good n go down the line real good but get stuffed if I know how to do sharp turns but I think it's a mixture of feet position, arm position body and where I'm looking
Great stuff! Question - I notice you slide your rear foot back on the board when coming up from a pump on the trough of a wave (5:19), does your weight stay primarily on front foot even though your stance has widened, or do you put more weight onto that back foot?
Your video are interesting but there one missing thing which is very important, and it's hard to show on video . It's how the rail roll and what the inclinaison of the rail should be during a manoeuver , at my level im stuck figuring out the inclinaison i need to perform on certain manoeuver , roundhouse cut back for exemple , carve and so on. If you can model this with a line or something during your video it's would be really nice or make a video about it . it's what im missing to gain in radicality and it's a step in the way of learning to get better.
Hey fellow SA buddy! Cool video! I’ve moved to landlocked Europe to chase a dream... hence I have no waves but a long river with a long smooth path :). What surf-trainer skateboard do you recommend?
hi Kales , question: when the waves are higher (and stronger) , should I wait for the wave to arrive and give a couple of paddles when it arrives to me ? or shall I paddle in advance in order to match the coming wave speed ?
Pretty decent, not your if you weight distribution is correct, I’m at least 70% on my forehand snaps and 80% on my backhand. Maybe I’m wrong but it feels so much better🤔🤔🤔
