- How I am able to travel the country without working in my tiny vintage U-Haul CT-13 camper. The what, how, and why of what I'm doing and what it's like living this way. I've been on the road for 9 months on this trip. It's risky, but it's well worth it!

Love people who've figured their lives out. I was in a cube farm and only thing saved me was working from home for last 12 years. Now I live in the boondocks and hit the road whenever I feel the need, or can get someone to feed my chickens.
I'm so glad you have the option to work from home! I think hitting the road and having flexibility makes you more productive when you have that time to rest, relax and listen. Hope to see you down the road!

I’m glad I came across your video. This is exactly what I’m going to do very soon. I closed on my home less than 1 week ago, bought a truck a month ago, RV trailer 3 weeks ago, waiting and hoping my business sells soon. By the end of this year I’ll be out there live MY dream. You told us about what people have said to you and your responses and it’s exactly what I’m getting from people around me. When someone asks I tell them I’m not going to wait until I’m not healthy enough or unable to do things. I’m going now and I will figure it out as I go. When I run out of money I’ll decide then where I’ll go and what I will do for a job. Happy trails and hope to see you out there.

I love that you love to "Do Nothing!" I have been unexpectedly full-time rving for 4 years and my favorite activity is also to DO Nothing!🎉 I feel like so many people cannot realate or understand this, but actually I do, do a lot of stuff when traveling, but I also cherish my freedom to just do nothing or do whatever I want if I feel like it 😄
I love that! And I love that I don't feel guilty if I want to do nothing and be introspective. It's almost meditative. I've learned so much about myself in the quiet moments. Cheers to doing nothing! 🥂

I could not agree more. So many people feel like they have to always be busy to look like they have full life, but having a full life means different things to different people. We own an acre of land and we live off grid in our shuttle bus. I love just sitting in our yard and throwing the ball for our 4 dogs. It's a simple life and living off grid definitely comes with it's challenges, but our land is almost paid off and the bus we paid cash and the cost to build it we paid cash and it functions just like a regular RV with running water and a really powerful solar system. Luckily we have a well here so we have unlimited water with no water bill. If people were willing to live more simple not only would they be able to retire a lot sooner, but they also would feel the freedom of not being attached a mortgage and a house full of a lot of things they don't need.

I bet it's adorable! I am so torn on trying to keep it pro or repainting mine as well. I just love old original vintage stuff, but I have seen so many cute remodels, it's tempting.

AMAZING! One of, if not the BEST, video about traveling after SAVING, to do so! You have no idea how many of these videos there are of folks that are nomad workers on the road or had millions already, so they have an incredibly expensive build out, etc. You have made the REALEST video around! Saving money up in order to do this is going to be something ALOT of people will be able to relate to AND the fact that you talked about TAKING A LEAP OF FAITH...tons of people are gonna need to hear it! Thank you!!! I know it's not for everyone, but I've been able to make it work 3 times now. I'm currently kind of stuck in Washington State and trying to get home, but these temps are crazy! Thankfully, I saved enough for emergencies like this and have a backup plan. I haven't worked since November, and while money is tight, I know I'll figure it out. Hope to see you down the road!

Thank you so much! Alaska is a destination that I probably won't ever want to do solo with this set-up, but I would love to do it at some point. The thought of getting stranded without gas or something like that is a deterrent. I'm not always the best planner. I wing a lot of things so I can be my own worst enemy. It sounds like an epic trip and I've known many people that have taken it. (Some even multiple times)... Hope to see you down the road! Safe travels ahead!

Wow, I would love to do what you are doing. I have a 6 x 10 with solar panels. It’s taking a long time for me to save money to build it but you’re ahead of the game I think eventually a lot of us will be in travel trailers I’ve never seen a U-Haul like that before that must be one of a kind. I love it. Good job you’re doing what a lot of people wish they could do they don’t have the guts yet.
Thank you so much! Your build will be amazing once you get it finished! I'm excited for you! I got so lucky with my timing pre-pandemic for finding the camper. There are less than 2,000 of them. It's a collector's item, but it's more fun to use and abuse. It will eventually get a restoration of sorts, but it's still holding up well for being close to 40 years old.
I was chatting with a professional fisherman the other day and people tell him all the time how lucky he is to live that life... He said, "you just gotta jump in and do it." It's almost like having kids... If you wait for the exact right time, you may never have them if that is what you want. There is no time like the present. I trust myself to always land on my feet and figure it out... I wish more people could experience a life similar to this. It feels like I've leveled up in life. 💛

I think what you are doing is amazing. Me and my wife travel the country in a semi truck for a living but we bought a holiday rambler and outfitted it with alot of solar and batteries so that when we are not at work we have a place to stay. It's currently in my mom's yard but hopefully soon we can find a small property to buy and set up out camper and our life. We both are amazed at what ypu are doing. Thanks for doing the video

Thank you! I just want people to know it is possible, you just have to take calculated risks. It took me a year and a half to get everything together for my first trip. I ran out of money and went back to work over Christmas and the new year... Covid hit and then I couldn't take my next trip until later in the year... But this is my 3rd time doing this! I want this, bad. It was supposed to be both of us. He got heart failure and my travel life I imagined is gone. So, why not, after he passes, if I don't get breast cancer, just had a scare, why not sell and go??? I have money saved, but paying my insurance and taxes, might stop me. Be tough Jean. (easy for me to say) My wife and I were planning to travel also. I lost her to cancer though. Life teaches some hard lessons. Am trying to get it together enough to take a trip too. Cash is very tight at age 66. But am ready to say screw that, time goes fast. Can usually get more cash, not possible to "get" more time. Wish you and your husband the best. Be strong.
It sounds like you have a smart plan in place, Jean! I am so sorry for life's circumstances that have been thrown at you. Wishing you all the best as you journey through this difficult situation. I think renting an RV is an excellent choice to get started. It's not always what people expect and can be more challenging than what some had imagined. Social media does a terrible job of giving people a realistic perspective of this life. I've had to camp in more parking lots this year than I thought I'd have to... My only advice is to make sure you don't put yourself in a situation you can't get out of. I had a year and a half to prep for my first trip. And then I go back and work for around a year for the next trips. I can't do this forever, but I have a plan A, B, and C and will pick up gig work if necessary. @lastmason5491 You are exactly right! You can always make more money, but you can't make more time. I am sending you love and healing for the difficult circumstances you've been through. I have backup plans and know my capabilities with the risks I take. I still need to go back and make money at some point. I've just learned that I can survive with so much less than what others can and it makes this life almost sustainable for me. Hope to see you down the road! 💛

We just completed in March our first around the US (and all the way to Alaska) road trip with our 1984 Scamp, similar to your UHaul. We saved and saved then left our jobs to do this. BEST decision ever. Now we are settled down again working and hope to do it again!! That kind of travel was definitely not always easy, especially with two of us sharing the space! We ran into issues here and there, however this is a beautiful country and so many places to camp or just stay overnight for free or low cost (not the west coast!). For the west coast we did join Harvest Host which was very helpful. Have a great adventure!!!
I have a harvest host membership as well. It helped to find places intermittently. I have some friends that included the Boondockers welcome and they could typically stay places for more than just one night which is all that harvest host allows. I would have probably added the membership at the beginning of this trip, but now I'm off the coast and it's easier to find free places to camp. Glad you have experienced a similar freedom! I'm sure traveling with a partner has its challenges, but to share that experience with someone you care about also seems pretty magical. Hope to see you down the road! Safe travels!
And sometimes loosing a job that you wasn't happy with is a true blessing in disguise. Thank God they let you go from that job. Your life has become way more interesting and such better memories

Just ran across your channel, thanks for sharing! As others have said, I love that you arranged your life to see if you would enjoy pure freedom to choose to do nothing, and you do! As I do! Ive arranged my life to be debt free in retirement, in a late model RV on a little, very rural chunk of TN woods. I do a lot of nothing, & love it! I did the RV life in my teens with my parents, so I dont have the bug to get out there anymore, but I love that you are discovering yourself and your inner strength & resourcefulness. I used to work in Nashville I lived out at Stewarts ferry and work at dialysis clinic Inc. med center on Church Street. i’ve been a nomad now for eight years and I did sell everything, I have very ambivalent feelings about that but I’m trusting in God. I’m currently helping a friend at her bed-and-breakfast in Goodlettsville in order to park in her driveway during this summer heat. What a cute trailer, perfect size. Your fur babies are beautiful👍👍

Having gone from a 5th wheel to small shuttle bus I can appreciate what you’re saying having to get out and connect, leaving your safe space. I love the little shuttle bus RV that I found in Livingston Tennessee. It built out pretty nicely but not elaborate like you see some. It works for me and Chauncey

I spent over 20 years in a cubihell it was a blessing when I was laid off and I took off on the road off on for about a year. It’ s been so wonderful seeing your travels with fur babies in the cutest little trailer in the world! 🤩

Thank you!!! 💛 If I can do it, you can do it! Just take calculated risks. I have a plan A, plan B, plan C, plan D, and even a plan E if all else fails. I didn't quit my job until I had saved enough to cover the "unexpecteds" either, which I had to dip into that fund quite a bit up the coast of Cali because I didn't feel safe to try and boondock in heavily populated areas. I stick out like a sore thumb. I went with my gut and was able to swing it. It gave me so many lovely experiences like the ones I talked about. People are so good! 💛 Don't be afraid to take the leap, but also be prepared if something does not go according to plan. Have some type of emergency fund set aside.

We have them here where I live in Northern California where the Camp Fire destroyed our town in 2018, but the beautiful wildlife came back, I'm so thankful for that. This is so fascinating! Most of us work, and take a few vacations. You vacation with a few breaks to work. I like your thinking.
It's the perfect setup to pick up and drop whenever I want. I also bought a house within my means instead of trying to afford something that would not allow for this flexibility. Everything that I ever said I wanted has unfolded on this trip. I'm excited for the future. It is extremely risky, but I also don't have a family (kids or a spouse) to account for other than my fur family. 💛

I love the encouragement you give to others for going out and living your life. Stop the 9-5 daily drudge because you will never get this time back. Now that I work remote 100% I still can’t go and get out and do what you are doing because I have to caregive for my 92-year-old mother. She still lives in her own home on a large corner lot with lots of yardwork and errands to do on the weekends And I have my own home to care for as well.. And no I do not have anyone to support me, not at all, not a Neighbor not anyone to help me with the situation and I definitely cannot pay someone to do this. So in the meantime, I will take a one night trip or risk taking a two night trip to camp. I love to camp. But it is tough for some with certain life situation but if you do not have the responsibility to caregive for someone like I do then go! please do go! You will never regret getting on the road and doing what you want to.
My circumstances are very different from most. If I take a misstep, I have to figure it out. I also piecemealed this journey together. It's very basic, but doable and comes with a ton of risk.
You are smart to take a night or 2 for yourself here and there. We all need that from time to time. I know you will not regret this invaluable time caring for your mother. I just pray my mother is as blessed as yours to make it to 92. What a gift of time that would be. My parents also want to be out traveling, but they are in a similar situation of caring for my 93 year old grandfather. Enjoy your time with your mom. You'll have an amazing trip in the future when the time is right for you! Hope to see you down the road! 💛
There will come a time when “nothing” will get boring. But, the glory of it is that one can create any experience from simply being. I love your wisdom.
I've also found that when you get bored, it fuels creativity to another level because it gives you a chance to listen at the most basic level. 💛

What area did people go missing?
@misstara9838 Around Monument Valley. There's people that go missing in a lot of remote areas and National Parks... It's risky business out here sometimes... That's why you always go with your gut. If you get weird vibes, those feelings are there to keep us safe. You should only stay where you are comfortable. I ignored the vibe I got when I got there because Monument Valley was a special spot that I didn't get to visit with my grandmother before she passed. I wanted to bring my senior dog there before I lost her. I was blinded by my own determination to see that part of my dream come true. I wouldn't have stayed there had I not been on a mission to see it for the first time with my senior dog before I lost her.
So cool! My trips with my kiddo are always to San Simeon to search for sea glass. I have met so many sweet people and locals at that state park:) I really want to get a tiny house some day. Growing up and living in So. Cal it seems like only a pipe dream, so I appreciate your encouragement to find ways to make that dream specific to my vision. Happy and safe travels! Love your camper ❤

Thank you! Something I've realized on this trip is to appreciate the small moments and the process of making your dreams happen. Life is just made up, you can make it whatever you want it to be with patience and understanding yourself better. Just don't forget to enjoy the NOW. It's the only thing that's relevant. You can't change what's already happened and you can't predict the future, so focus on the now and creating the life that you want for yourself. Start with little things like going for a hike on your day off... Before you know it, you'll be living your dream! 💛

It was neglected for several years and set up. My goal is to have it rolling by spring. Also , please be careful out there and keep that pew pew close.

What a lovely little rig you and the fur kids have! Many #vanlifers do sell all and dive in sometimes over their heads, but many of us have thought hard and prepared long for this. After 3 years of contemplating (and part time buslife) I sold my house. Turned out to be exactly the correct time and I love living the lifestyle. I’ll own a little place again, but it will be in a different part of the country… gotta see the country to find it! ✌🏼🚐✨✨
That's so awesome! I don't have the guts to give up my homebase until I find where I want to land next. I haven't been home for almost 10 months. I am a very calculated risk type of person... This works well for me because I can pick it up and leave it when I want. In all honesty, it took me 1.5 years to prep for my first trip. It's like trying to eat an elephant...(not that I ever would), but you've got to do it one bite at a time and eventually the pieces fall into place and you know it's time to go. It has been worth every sacrifice I made to have it happen. 💛
What an adorable set up and she's enjoying her life with her baby living the dream. So many people would give anything to live life the way she does. She seems like a very kind and sincere woman and just beautiful in every way. Unfortunately the sound was a little low. It was a little difficult for me to hear, but that could just be me. I part time camp too. I have a home and home business which i can take breaks from a few times a year. I do travel alone with my 4 yo husky. I normally stay in the west bc of all the things to do here.
When i do head east I'll fly bc I'm usually with friends who are taking vacay time and we meet up somewhere. So i do travel in different ways. For me, being flexible to achieve my goals works very well.

That is the dream! Sounds like you have figured out a happy and healthy lifestyle that works for you similar to mine. I also stay out west for my travels, mostly. There are not as many places on the east coast that support a nomadic lifestyle. You can have the best of both... Why should we have to choose if you can have it all?! 💛 Safe and happy travels to you as well!

Looking forward to a maiden voyage in my ambulance rv this winter for a couple months & now trying to get a couple short trips, doing some camping close by my home soon.
Not ready to sell everything and go full time yet. I’ve figured I’d keep the title of the vehicle on me when taking my first long trip this winter. If I don’t like it, I can always sell the vehicle and fly home to the frozen tundra……….
Hope that doesn’t happen.

That's so exciting for you! And yes, I hope you don't end up flying home, but kudos to you for having a back up plan. I think that's smart. These trips are often more difficult and challenging than people anticipate. Social media only points out the highlights... It is extremely challenging at times... I am one of those people that thrive in change and discomfort, so this lifestyle works well for me. I hope your trip goes incredibly well. If I can do it, almost anyone can. 💛
I'm almost done paying off my car just bought a trailer and now starting over on a career so hopefully I can do this eventually just for the experience of living

She is an excellent dog. She was my foster fail. I got her at 4 years old. She was on her way to the humane society during Covid. She was extremely broken and skittish when I got her and is still weary of men, but she has been an incredible companion for this journey. I'm lucky to have her.💛

I completely agree with you I think people should be able to do what they want to do in life and if it’s travel then I think they should be able to do it! Life is too damn short to be unhappy and depressed all the time. I want to travel I’m thinking about being one of those people I want to sell my house and buy me a camper van that me and my cats will fit in and hit the road but I am smart enough that I want to do a test run first before I sell my house and see if I’m going love it as much as I think I am first.
That is smart to test it out. Social media does a terrible job of giving you realistic travel life videos. It does take a toll to move so frequently. Sometimes you feel unsafe or insecure. The reward is the journey and self growth and everyone's journey and how they are able to make it work for them looks different. I sold it all and went full time 2 years ago and absolutely love it! I spend most of my time between TX and TN, but spending more time in Cookeville with my aging parents. I’m blessed to work from home full time so my travel looks a little different. I’m in my 5th wheel now but looking for a small camper like yours to take on shorter trips. Hope to meet you along the way at some point!
That's amazing! And wow! I don't have the guts to sell it all! It is nice for me with my set-up to have a home base. Living out of this tiny trailer is doable and brings so much joy, but I don't want it as a permanent solution. I love that I can pick it up and take it whenever I feel the call to go next. @@tennesseewanderer it wasn’t an easy decision but it was best for me! I’m full time in a 35 foot fifth wheel right now, and have some totes stored at my parents house. I’m not roughing it in any way! 😆 I’m just tired of hauling around the giant fifth wheel, so I’m thinking of leaving it here in TN as a home base, and get something smaller to travel in. Hit me up if you ever want to meet up on a camping trip. Sounds like we’re kindred spirits! 😊

Thank you! I have failed plenty of times along the way... Eventually you learn how to turn your failures into successes. I've learned how to fail forward. It's all a part of the process. I think we all fail when we get outside of our comfort zone. 💛 When you are uncomfortable, start small and build from there. This didn't happen overnight for me. Hope to see you down the road!

I hope and pray that one of these days I I can do the same! It has seriously crossed my mind so many times, but I have a small Ford Escape, Last night I researched cargo trailers. Because they are cheaper and looked at videos. How people converted cargo trailers into tiny RV, I even researched the teardrop trailers. There was someone that posted just recently that one was for sale in WI somewhere I believe... It was going for $8K not sure of the condition, but they pop up here and there. I've seen quite a few for sale since I got mine. I just saw a lady towing a little fiberglass camper the other day called a Bigfoot... You just never know. You'll get the right one at the right time for you. Sending good vibes your way to hopefully get exactly what you want. 💛

I agree. I haven't had much experience traveling in the Midwest, mostly because there seem to be more free camping options available in the Southwest. Now that I have explored so much of the Southwest, I may try to schedule another trip down the road to focus on the Midwest and areas I haven't explored yet.
