Lost my darling dad December 2022, he was a wonderful father and I had been a daddy’s girl all of my life. I would wake in the night sobbing for him and I was 62, that love never leaves you. He protected me and my siblings all of our lives, solved all of our problems when he could. Miss you dad ♥️

I highly recommend any of the songs off their greatest hits album.

When I was a teenager I thought this song was about a lost love. Later in life and finding out it was written for his father, the song took on a completely different feeling. Now, many many years after losing my parents, this song still gets to me. I will miss them forever.

This was an album my mom had gotten the last year she lived. I was 15 then and it became a piece of memory I had about her and hearing what Don said at the end about thinking if something happened would I want that as an everlasting memory between someone I love and thats how I too look at things myself now because you never expect when someone's time comes or even your own and I too would never want to carry that burden. Cherish those you love while you have them and give them the flowers while you have them with you and never take for granted life and love you cherish because its a precious gift to have had that love in your life while you have but your season to flourish 🙏 🕊 🌹

When I was 15 when this song came out and I didnt appreciate my dad like the last 28 yrs since has passed away . I knew this song was wrote about David Gates the singer's love for his dad . And since 1996 I can count on 1 hand how many times I have listened to it . Writing this really has helped me not tear up and click it off . When or if you lost your mom or dad , and if you are close to them the pain never goes away , it does dim , but it does not take much but the pain to be bright at a moments notice . Me? My grandpa was by FAR the best (OK, ONLY) father figure growing up. He was brilliant... fought in WWII, bombardier in the US Army Air Force. Graduated from USC w/honors (so YES, SC football is my favorite college sports team, since Grandpa and i watched them most Saturday afternoon). Also graduated from there for dental school. For FUN he was a pilot, played rec. volleyball & racquetball... and BUILT 2 planes in his garage. The 1 i got to fly in was a Christen Eagle II, an aerobatics plane. I flew with his best friend, ex-AF Colonel Bill Jackson, fighter pilot at the end of WWII & theoughout the Korean War. He put it and ME through our paces...all kinds of barrel rolls, loop-d-loop, and one massive Hammerhead Stall, where we point nose to the stars and fly till the engine stalls (or the pilot cuts it off so it doesnt ACTUALLY stall out, as i sorta believe it would be a better chance of an easy restart, which is needed, bc after the stall, we free fall till the ground gets awfully large & close. Cut the engine back on & pull out. So wild, & i only regretted not doing it with Grandpa. But Col. Jackson was the more badass pilot, so i got the best ride. Then, after my mom remarried to a Canadian, we left. I never saw him again bc he crashed the other plane he built, a BD-1, rear-engine & a major design flaw that made it sketchy whether or not the CANOPY (cockpit covering) closes & locks properly. It disnt one time, so it blew wide open, & the lock apparently broke. Then, all that air forced the nose nearly straight down, & he basically t-boned planet earth. He was both crushed and cut in two at the lower torso. Fortunately, the coroner's report said the massive head injuries should have been enough to end his life instantly (or close to it). My grandmother was out there watching him fly, on the headset talking. She never told us what they discussed on the way down (he was airborne for 30 seconds as he tried everything to pull out. I refused to attend the funeral. I was 16. This event completely BROKE ME, & to be fair, probably ruined me for nearly everything in life but fatherhood. I am damn nearly STILL in a kind of denial about him. Jack B. Wright, b. July FOURTH, 1921- d. May 4, 1996. My grandfather &, in practice, my DAD. THE ONLY MAN who ever showed any interest in teaching me how to be a man. Introduced me to watching live sports (on location)... college football & basketball, taught me racquetball. Helped me get onto my path of playing college basketball. Dentist, pilot, solo airplane builder, and the best man I have ever known by far. I wish SO HARD for an alternate universe where he never crashed that BD-1. Where I was able to spend lots of time with him during my teens, learning fromnhim how manhood works in the world and in the family context. Destroyed my knee JUST B4 my senior season started, also destroying my chance to play professionally, either via NBA training camp invitation OR for Europe. But i am more sad about this than almost anything else that ever happened "to me" in my life: i know he would have LOVED to watch me play college ball. Physics is a b!tch. I hate it & blame it for my REAL dad's d3ath. Phuck Fysics.

I grew up early years down the street from Leon McAuliffe, played with his daughter, he comped my parents to see him and the Bob Wills band at Cain’s Ball Room. From the perspective of a young person, I took all of their songs about love as romantic songs. Now, hearing it this time with the lyrics on the screen and watchiing BP's eyes. I realized it was about the loss of a parent. I haven't heard this song since I lost a parent. But he writes things so in your face and obscure at the same time that others can have it mean their mother, their significant other. My husband sent me the song, of course we didn't really look up the meanings of songs a lot back in the 90s, we just went with what we understood it to be. You'd think with the songs David Gates has written that his heart has been ripped out and stomped on several times over, yet he's been married to his college sweetheart since the mid-late 70s (I can't remember the date). The Prince song "She Gave Her Angels", I have no idea what his intentions were when he wrote it, to my husband that *is my Mama's song* , to me it's a song that is *theirs*. Music is so subjective, it has to be or 9/10 people may not get a song if it can only be heard a certain way.

I may have told you this before, but one of the earliest albums I ever bought was Bread with this song on it. This and the song "if", were my 2 favorites. At the time, I was very young and in love (I thought), and that is how I interpreted the lyrics. After hearing your comments today, I can easily see how it could be about losing someone who passed away. A parent makes the most sense. When I was very young my dad gave me all of his old 8 tracks and player. I don't where they ended up all of these years later, but I went out and bought a cassette of Bread's greatest hits when I was in High School. So, it's just funny for me to think about introducing a Gen Xer to Bread, but then again, I probably was one of the only teenagers chilling out listening to Bread in those days.😂
My best friend passed away suddenly in 1998. I worked with her sons to put together a slide show and used this song as the sound track for that video. Think of her every time I hear this now. This was written for a father, but still applies to mamas too.

They are still married, living on a ranch they bought when he retired from music, and they raised four children who became successful in their own chosen fields. I'd say his father showed him well about love.

I loved this group and songs back in the 70's and I thought it was about a lost love. Here it is many years later, I find out that it is about the loss of a parent. I lost my dad in 2009 and my mom in 2016. The song has new meaning for me and touched me very deeply. I was most like my dad and was close to my mom. The grief never goes away.

He put it and ME through our paces...all kinds of barrel rolls, loop-d-loop, and one massive Hammerhead Stall, where we point nose to the stars and fly till the engine stalls (or the pilot cuts it off so it doesnt ACTUALLY stall out, as i sorta believe it would be a better chance of an easy restart, which is needed, bc after the stall, we free fall till the ground gets awfully large & close. Cut the engine back on & pull out. So wild, & i only regretted not doing it with Grandpa. But Col. Jackson was the more badass pilot, so i got the best ride.
Then, after my mom remarried to a Canadian, we left. I never saw him again bc he crashed the other plane he built, a BD-1, rear-engine & a major design flaw that made it sketchy whether or not the CANOPY (cockpit covering) closes & locks properly. It disnt one time, so it blew wide open, & the lock apparently broke. Then, all that air forced the nose nearly straight down, & he basically t-boned planet earth. He was both crushed and cut in two at the lower torso. Fortunately, the coroner's report said the massive head injuries should have been enough to end his life instantly (or close to it).
My grandmother was out there watching him fly, on the headset talking. She never told us what they discussed on the way down (he was airborne for 30 seconds as he tried everything to pull out.
I refused to attend the funeral. I was 16. This event completely BROKE ME, & to be fair, probably ruined me for nearly everything in life but fatherhood. I am damn nearly STILL in a kind of denial about him.

Where I was able to spend lots of time with him during my teens, learning fromnhim how manhood works in the world and in the family context.
Destroyed my knee JUST B4 my senior season started, also destroying my chance to play professionally, either via NBA training camp invitation OR for Europe. But i am more sad about this than almost anything else that ever happened "to me" in my life: i know he would have LOVED to watch me play college ball.

Hi Guys! Great Reaction/Review as usual! You know what, you guys really got me thinking about this song. I have loved Bread and their music since I was a young dreamy eyed girl. From the perspective of a young person, I took all of their songs about love as romantic songs. Now, hearing it this time with the lyrics on the screen and watchiing BP's eyes. I realized it was about the loss of a parent. I haven't heard this song since I lost a parent. So, I cheated and googled it, because that's what we over curious cheaters do. 😋 David Gates wrote it for his Dad who he lost in 1963. I just lost my Dad in October. He was 86, I was 60. I was blessed to have my Dad for 60 years. Mom is still with me at 82. Thanks for giving me this for my Dad and I. Wow! I'm going to replay it now. ❤❤Much Love Always ❤❤

I like to think David wrote it for his dad because he didn't get to physically see the success that he helped foster. But he writes things so in your face and obscure at the same time that others can have it mean their mother, their significant other. My husband sent me the song, of course we didn't really look up the meanings of songs a lot back in the 90s, we just went with what we understood it to be. You'd think with the songs David Gates has written that his heart has been ripped out and stomped on several times over, yet he's been married to his college sweetheart since the mid-late 70s (I can't remember the date).
The Prince song "She Gave Her Angels", I have no idea what his intentions were when he wrote it, to my husband that *is my Mama's song* , to me it's a song that is *theirs*.

I was 13 when this song came out in 1978 and I still love it today as I did when i first heard it.

I've always loved this song and thought it was about a relationship with a lover. When my dad passed is when I learned he wrote it about his dad's passing. Couldn't listen to it for years without full-on sobbing. I'm doing better. I only teared up a little this time.

I may have told you this before, but one of the earliest albums I ever bought was Bread with this song on it. This and the song "if", were my 2 favorites. At the time, I was very young and in love (I thought), and that is how I interpreted the lyrics. After hearing your comments today, I can easily see how it could be about losing someone who passed away. A parent makes the most sense. That was an eye-opener for me so thanks for the insight guys, and the trip down memory lane!! ☺💙

When I was very young my dad gave me all of his old 8 tracks and player. I don't where they ended up all of these years later, but I went out and bought a cassette of Bread's greatest hits when I was in High School. So, it's just funny for me to think about introducing a Gen Xer to Bread, but then again, I probably was one of the only teenagers chilling out listening to Bread in those days.😂
My best friend passed away suddenly in 1998. I worked with her sons to put together a slide show and used this song as the sound track for that video. Think of her every time I hear this now. This was written for a father, but still applies to mamas too.

They are still married, living on a ranch they bought when he retired from music, and they raised four children who became successful in their own chosen fields. I'd say his father showed him well about love.

I loved this group and songs back in the 70's and I thought it was about a lost love. Here it is many years later, I find out that it is about the loss of a parent. I lost my dad in 2009 and my mom in 2016. The song has new meaning for me and touched me very deeply. I was most like my dad and was close to my mom. The grief never goes away.
