@Gabert1k It was a team effort when they created TR for Land Rover and Ford even said that TR would eventually find its way into other products as well like the Ford Explorer. Both TR systems even use the same icons.
@TeamAlecAmerica I went to buy one, but when I started to look at the engineering of it and found it to be a real non-maintainable vehicle for the owner ... if you love to spend 100 plus an hour to the ford shop quite regularly, this is for you. As for towing, make sure you have great towing insurance and a warranty that goes beyond the years your going to own it. From a scale from 1-10 ... it's a 1 for the person who tows, 4 wheels, or maintains their own vehicle.
All you guys complaining about it need to go out and drive one, it's an amazing experience. My mom bought one about 7 months back, and I feel lucky to be able to drive such a vehicle. The power is just amazing..
@unidad355 Ford introduced the new Explorer in hopes of sparking new sales based off the improved gas mileage capability of the new model. It still has good enough off-roading capability for the basics and gets much better gas mileage compared to the competition you listed. 4Runners are gas-guzzling V8's. Grand Cherokees are notorious, as are all Jeeps for being hard at the gas pumps. I myself own a Jeep Liberty in which i am lucky to get 19 MPG on the interstate. great job Ford.
@igotwhips not at all. The Explorer is still a very capable off-roader. Both Motortrend and Autoblog liked it more than the Cherokee in their First Drive publications.
@icareyoushouldtoo, lol true. But if ure really worried about passenger space, get a Flex or Expedition. Plus ford did'nt have to make it a crossover to throw in a 3rd row.
Ford should sell a version of the Explorer with the 3.5L Eco-boost V6 with 355-365 HP. Now THAT would be a nice ride... and it could probably tow well too. The one thing I don't care for with this vehicle is My Ford Touch, but that's about it.
All - Surely buying a car or suv or crossover is all about personal choice? Its been said many times that this Ford is not a rock climber nor is it intended for heavy duty towing. Its been positioned as an occasional off roader with some towing capacity - that being said if this car isnt what you want, go buy something else? To me its a modern vehicle with good high tech interior - I need something to get me up the mountain at the weekends, that will carry my gear and keep my family safe -
@kendrickevans301 Until the Firestone Tire fiasco. Also look at all automaker trends, most are breaking away from the truck based SUV. and going to a crossover. and the sales had drastically dropped going from 137,817 to a mere 52,190 in just a matter of time between 2007-2009.
To all the people that think Ford should have installed a V8 in a heavy new BOF SUV apparently have not noticed what is happening to gas prices right now. Those Jeeps and Dodges with HEMI's will sit on the lots rotting. A new Explorer can save you close to a $1,000 a year in fuel costs (15,000 miles a year) when gas hits $4.00 a gallon compared to those V8 powered Chrysler products. The old Explorer just wasn't selling anymore and even if they had updated it sales would have remained low.
This will continue to be a hit for Ford....throw all the stones and arrows you want ppl...Ford is displaying something called VISION here....they saw that the cross-over market was and IS still growing while the truck based SUV market is shrinking. In terms of refinement (ride quality, comfort, quietness, and handling) I bet this new Explorer blows away the old versions....Ford nailed it here.
It is a car, it cannot tow crap, has a unibody ... it is anything but durable if you use it in any extreme circumstance! This SUV is prefect for Grandma who has a lot of money for repairs and will never open the hood!
This is a pretty respectable rig but I still love my AWD V8 1998 Mercury Mountaineer. Yeah it definitely drives like a truck but I kind of like that about it. And I can't get enough of the sound of that V8 under the hood. I can respect he new Explorer but I'll be sticking with the traditional body-on-frame V8 powered Explorers from yesteryear. I'm just weird like that.
Not that the new explorer looks bad, I actually like it. But in my own opinion the explorer should have stayed the same, and they should have named this the ford edge XL or something of that sort, because alot of people like the tradition of the explorers, yes they changed over the years but you were always able to tell it was an explorer. Now you can't unless you know about the redesign.
maybe in the US no one goes off road but here in Saudi Arabia (witch is a desert basically) 80% of people go off road with anything from a corolla to a land cruiser and the old explorer did very good in the sand but i'm not so sure about this one...
@abm89 My 2011 explorer gets 21.5mpg around town and 26mpg @ 75mph on road, higher @ 65mph Great running SUV! It running a 6speed auto with manual shift if needed. About 290hp/260#torque.
@bornwithanattitude is there something im not getting.......... on fords website it says it has the 3.5 liter engine, i don't know it the European one has a 3.7 but i KNOW the american model has a 3.5 and 283 hp and 252 lbft of torque.the mustang 3.7 has 305 hp and 280 lbft of torque, look at there website
@yamajammer76 I don't know where they're selling. I have yet to see one on the road or at a local dealership. And I don't need a Raptor. I have a family. I need an SUV, not a crossover. If it's got a sideways engine driving the front wheels, I don't need it.
@limeimac97776 I know. So is the Yukon, Navigator, Expedition, Durango, 4-Runner, Borrego, Pathfinder, Escalade, Range Rover, and all BMW and Mercedes SUV's. Ther are others as well that are still RWD, I just can't think of all of them now. My point is that Ford already has 3 wrong-wheel-drive crossovers, the Edge, Flex, and Escape. Why do they need another? The Explorer could have easily been improved and updated without resorting to wrong-wheel-drive. Ford has dropped the ball big time.
alot ofppl are made they changed the explorer so much but hey its not always going to be the same, nice SUV, and the price is alots cheaper than I thought it would be! wish they had a V8 option tho
@druddock The Subie system is nice. It's rear-biased, full-time AWD. Unlike the Flexplorer which is a sideways engine bastard with FWD 99% of the time until the rear axle eventually engages. There's no low range on the Flexplorer either. It's not a true 4x4, I don't car what anyone thinks. It's a sissymobile Taurus station wagon.
"Nobody who owns a Ford Explorer right now takes it rock crawling" You all need to visit the ExplorerForum website. I take my Explorer rock crawling quite often, and so do a couple thousand other people. Ford doesn't know crap about the capabilities of an Explorer because they never really cared to come and check us out more than once when they sent the new Sport Trac out.
@tjhaywood100 Call it what you will, but it will go through what 95% of the explorer market wants, so what is the problem? The terrain management is a nice complex system that when set to proper features will work with the trans axle, limited slip differential, as well as shift points. Seems like to don't like unibody, and why?
False. The Ford Focus and Ford Explorer are both selling extremely well. The Focus is the best selling car in Britain for many years in a row. Same with the Fiesta.
Most people are just whining, because they're actually jealous that their favourable car manufacturer is nowhere near as innovative, or as ahead with technology as Ford is at the moment.
actually the explorer 3.5 liter v6 its not the same engine as the mustang, it has the 3.7 you should get your facts straight. the stang's 3.7 it has 305hp and 280 lb ft of torque. the 3.5 has 290 hp and 255 lb ft of torque
@alialimali No you dont know, thats an Escape or Mariner, which I own two of and they are ~4600 lbs I'll post the US manufactures GVW label @ my page for your information.
@Kelter2 Very true. This thing is not worthy of the Explorer name. At least the Grand Cherokee is still RWD with a real 4x4 drivetrain with a low-range transfer case and the option of a V-8 engine. Ford is killing itself with this imitation SUV.
Well, at least Jeep, Dodge, Nissan, and Toyota still make real REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE, V-8 powered SUV's for the men out there who still buy SUV's. Unfortunately, I can't afford any of them. But I love my 16 year old 4x4 Exploder! And I certainly wouldn't trade it for this new wrong-wheel-drive sissymobile. The Explorer is dead. And after the initial "new" wears off the Flexplorer, it'll die a horrible death too. Then the Durango and Grand Ckerokee will be kings of the SUV hill!! Go team RWD!!!
Such a sad sad day for us true Ford Fans. i have always been a Ford guy, worked for Ford and my dad still sells them. I was so happy the way Ford had operated and made it though on its own without government help. They built great american cars people wanted and had great quality which made them solid and on top. Now though it looks like someone dropped the ball. This thing is hideous and is a waste of the explorer name.Ford sold great as it looked american but now they have gone euro sad.
The best thing is that the ford corporation has engineered away your ability to change your transmission fluid / add or change by means of removing their fill tube with the check valve pumping location on the bottom. If your leaking on the road, forget adding, your going to be broke down. Next, the great thing is the AWD which takes your economy down 20% over a traditional Part time 4wd that runs rear wheel drive in 2wd mode. This vehicle will cost 100+ and hour for it's repairs!
if you want a more car like driving experience, then buy a car. leave some smaller SUV's for the people that still wanna drive them. why can't you put the advanced new engine in a unibody design and still have it be an actual SUV?
@MrAlexChryler okay great if for what ever reason you like the looks of the dodge better than that's a better choice for you i just dislike people saying things like "found on road dead" or "fix or repair daily" they either make up bad stories about fords or they're incredibly unlucky i've sold several of my fords to buy better ones. I drive an 03 mariner now 3.0 v6 4x4 I sold a 2 door ranger to help pay for it neither of them has had problems.
@Dirtyharry70585 BTW sent email address and I'll send a picture ;) Ford does not post GVWR in the manual since different model may have different options, so the posted weight is ALWAYS posted near the drivers door with the VIN#. Sorry.
The only real American suvs left is the Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition, Grand Cherokee, and the Durango. The rest are just front wheel drive crossover garbage. leadnsteel you are right, they started to suck then, but at least they were still body on frame, rwd, and had a v8 option.
@bobbilly62 didn't really follow the topic of discussion, but i know one thing for sure...... i will never ever buy another JEEP! i still have mine and it's costing me money everyday... something is always going wrong! a good friend of mines works for a JEEP dealership as a lead tech and he tells me everyday of all the problems people have with jeeps over and over and over...
@tjhaywood100 You do realize that the new Explorer has a 14 day supply right now. That is one of the lowest in the industry so either Ford is only building 10 a day or the things are selling like hot cakes. If you want a real factory spec. off-roader get a 2011 F-150 Raptor. The Raptor will make your little Grand Cherokee look sad when the going gets tough on a baja course. You want Ford to build a niche vehicle for a mass market category and you can't make money doing that.
@wrecks1984 Yeppers. I have indeed. And I've never been stuck in the snow! The Flexplorer's mpg isn't that impressive. And I'd give up a couple of mpg's to keep from looking like a limp wristed nancyboy, thank you very much.
@tjhaywood100 well said. this more or less "mini-van" of an explorer blows! a unibody explorer? there are already too many little suv or cuvs (whatever they are called) on the streets. might as well just label it a taurus wagon thats what it looks like. it looks like another ford crossover. seems like jeep is going to be the only company with offroad capable cars unless you buy a truck.
@Gabert1k
It was a team effort when they created TR for Land Rover and Ford even said that TR would eventually find its way into other products as well like the Ford Explorer. Both TR systems even use the same icons.
just drove it yesterday and everything was pretty good. Its gonna take a while though to get used to the myford touch system. Its pretty neat tho.
@TeamAlecAmerica I went to buy one, but when I started to look at the engineering of it and found it to be a real non-maintainable vehicle for the owner ... if you love to spend 100 plus an hour to the ford shop quite regularly, this is for you.

I hope this will come to Norway. The four litre ecoboost engine with its 237 hp is really interesting.
@MrColdStove Yup, currently reading 26.9mpg. Cost about $60-$70 to fill it, depending on prices that week.
@vanquishman Yep - looks like he did. Two guys outside of the vehicle really take notice of the scratches beginning at about 4:38.
@unidad355 Ford introduced the new Explorer in hopes of sparking new sales based off the improved gas mileage capability of the new model. I absolutely love this vehicle! I want one!
What was ground clearance?
I don't care what anyone says, I bought it, I spent almost 60,000 on it, and I love it
@tw1869
wrong in the edge you cannot select snow, mud, sand ect. also the interior isn't as big
i take my '97 explorer off road all the time. i love the thing. i like the gas mileage on the new one and the large sun roofs.
@igotwhips not at all. The Explorer is still a very capable off-roader. Both Motortrend and Autoblog liked it more than the Cherokee in their First Drive publications.
What camera is used for filming this? Couldn't focus well at times
@mifan93
Yes, there is a knob to select the AWD behavior depending on the terrain you´re going.
@redrider736
Yes, they will but not as quick as we´d like to. I think the Ecoboost I-4 is scheduled for second quarter of the year
@icareyoushouldtoo, lol true. But if ure really worried about passenger space, get a Flex or Expedition. Plus ford did'nt have to make it a crossover to throw in a 3rd row.

@icareyoushouldtoo it can be up to 11 weeks until I get my new Explorer. The demand is huge.

LOVE it, more important is that my wife loves it ! Will they offer the 2.0 Ecoboost engine ??????
Finally, they updated the tired old design. Very nice.
@cougarlover1 May I say the Previous models explorer was the best saling mid sized SUV, so sales has nothing to do with it
i wonder how that touch screen works in extreme cold weather...-30 C or -10 F probably is slow like an i-pod in cold weather
is there a 4x4 selector??
What is better on gas jeep or ford?
@kendrickevans301 Until the Firestone Tire fiasco. Also look at all automaker trends, most are breaking away from the truck based SUV. and going to a crossover. and the sales had drastically dropped going from 137,817 to a mere 52,190 in just a matter of time between 2007-2009.

That was an informative video , unlike all others!!!
soon there will be no such thing as a v8 engine, but the explorer was the first truck i ever liked and still do
My mom loves her explorer
@tubevideoguy762 yeah ? just not on the surfaces that you need 4 low on
Not that the new explorer looks bad, I actually like it. @dave777blaster
yeah having the computer controlled traction dial gives great results on many different surfaces
maybe in the US no one goes off road but here in Saudi Arabia (witch is a desert basically) 80% of people go off road with anything from a corolla to a land cruiser and the old explorer did very good in the sand but i'm not so sure about this one...

Ya I like my old 2003 ford explorer v8.
@dave777blaster
were you even watching it did great off road i've heard of people going through water up to the ford emblem just fine.
@MrAlexChryler
the durango is 1000 dollars more with fewer mpg and less standard equipment fords have always meant value
It's an SUV not a crossover. Ford has made that very clear.
@tjhaywood100 Call it what you will, but it will go through what 95% of the explorer market wants, so what is the problem? The terrain management is a nice complex system that when set to proper features will work with the trans axle, limited slip differential, as well as shift points. Correction. 3.5 liter V6. Not 3.7 liter.
its not a suv anymore its a crossover witch is very differant its based on a car platform not a truck they still got the big expedtion

@BlowingPumpkins a MAJORITY of explorer owners did not take them offroad or tow haha
@alialimali
No you dont know, thats an Escape or Mariner, which I own two of and they are ~4600 lbs
I'll post the US manufactures GVW label @ my page for your information.
44K and no low range ? are they nuts
@dancap yeah soon enough tho everyone well know about the redesign so!
So its a Ford Flex now?
@Kelter2 Very true. This thing is not worthy of the Explorer name. At least the Grand Cherokee is still RWD with a real 4x4 drivetrain with a low-range transfer case and the option of a V-8 engine. Ford is killing itself with this imitation SUV.
@icareyoushouldtoo
Relax, everyone has their own opinions, think what you want, let others think what they want.
@bobbilly62 The new one has more ground clearance than the old one. deal with it.
+1 to that from LeftLane: If you want to go off road, buy a Jeep or Land Rover.
@zmann80000 finally a comment that makes sense
2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee would out drive this vehicle anywhere anytime!
Well, at least Jeep, Dodge, Nissan, and Toyota still make real REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE, V-8 powered SUV's for the men out there who still buy SUV's. Unfortunately, I can't afford any of them. okay great if for what ever reason you like the looks of the dodge better than that's a better choice for you i just dislike people saying things like "found on road dead" or "fix or repair daily" they either make up bad stories about fords or they're incredibly unlucky i've sold several of my fords to buy better ones. I drive an 03 mariner now 3.0 v6 4x4 I sold a 2 door ranger to help pay for it neither of them has had problems.
@tjhaywood100 The Expedition is the body on frame. If you are brave enough to buy a Jeep, dodge, or any Chrysler for that matter, good luck lol.
@Dirtyharry70585 BTW sent email address and I'll send a picture ;)
Ford does not post GVWR in the manual since different model may have different options, so the posted weight is ALWAYS posted near the drivers door with the VIN#. Sorry.
The only real American suvs left is the Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition, Grand Cherokee, and the Durango. The rest are just front wheel drive crossover garbage. leadnsteel you are right, they started to suck then, but at least they were still body on frame, rwd, and had a v8 option.
beat that fuel efficiency!
@wrecks1984 Nope. I won't. I've hated FWD for 30 years. Why should I stop now?
You want Ford to build a niche vehicle for a mass market category and you can't make money doing that.
the Explorers started sucking after 2001 when ford introduced independent suspension and that crappy electronic 4WD.
@giannial1985 thats what ive been telling everyone! its great to know not everyone on youtube is ignorant
@koltonc1 This wouldn't last long in the Moab desert....Jeeps would
@wrecks1984 Yeppers. I have indeed. And I've never been stuck in the snow! The Flexplorer's mpg isn't that impressive. And I'd give up a couple of mpg's to keep from looking like a limp wristed nancyboy, thank you very much.
change the name from explorer to edge because thats what it is
That was on ( paved) road dude. You did not do anything off-road. What u did is off-asphalt !!! But still on road.
Why do people keep bitching about this car
why does this truck look like it would get stuck on the trail and mudd?
Oh, for those of you out there who want car like ride and economy...BUY A CAR!!!!!!
I hope i can get one..pray for me
Ford Mafia @ 4:35 lol
@tjhaywood100 well said. this more or less "mini-van" of an explorer blows! a unibody explorer? there are already too many little suv or cuvs (whatever they are called) on the streets. might as well just label it a taurus wagon thats what it looks like. it looks like another ford crossover. seems like jeep is going to be the only company with offroad capable cars unless you buy a truck.
Doesn't really look like a crossover...
Its a CUV (cross over) It is far from an SUV anymore.
@icareyoushouldtoo Fuel economy is king now a day's. The future is coming.
