Gary Busey's vanishing torso aside, the warehouse scene in Predator 2 is one of my favourites of all time. An elite team who (having debriefed Dutch) know what the Predator is about and so prep accordingly to ambush him. They have heat suits to block the infrared, prep the place so its cloak won't work - the hunter has become the hunted as they skulk through the dark warehouse, the Predator unable to see them but slowly getting suspicious somethings up. The Predator adjusts his visor through the spectrum until he catches the light off their UV torches and then all hell breaks loose.
Oh my gosh I thought I was losing my mind - every time I try to talk about Predator people roll there eyes as if it's a dumb action movie. This is the only discussion that talks about the high level craftsmanship involved in making that movie.
You should check out on Collative Learning's channel the analysis of Dillon's death scene. There you'll see how really high level their craftsmanship was! And why this movie is much more than a dumb action movie.

What I've always loved about the 'deforestation scene' is the absolute trust that they have for each other. It actually demonstrates some subtle characterisation. They all step in without a second of hesitation and mow down the jungle.
He also tried to take it on head-to-head and died for his trouble. Schwarzenegger's character learns from the error, and by the end, he knows better: he runs, he hides, he sets traps, he gets the creature to kill itself. Dutch triumphs because he realizes that a head-to-head confrontation will end with his opponent destroying him.
i always loved the scene early on when dillon, dutch and his team are on the helicopter preparing to rescue the hostages. it established the close relationship between blain and mac early on and shows how well the team functions together. blain offers his chewing tobacco to mac first, then helps himself, then offers it to everyone else on the helicopter. i thought the whole team had good chemistry, even if much of it was short since, well, people start dying pretty fast.
As the matter of fact, several years ago one person made special cut of Predator, where he removed every spoken line. The final cut was about 1 hour 20 minutes and it's awesome.

Jay and Jack are right about the tight simplicity of the script, and appreciate that there's no clunky exposition scene where one character tells the others (and the audience) about the history of the Predator. There kind-of _is_ such a moment, though, when Anna talks about the local folklore and describes how in the hottest summers, the villages would be stalked by "the beast that makes trophies of men". As far as I can tell, that scene is pretty much the only reason that character is in the movie (it would be easy enough to alter the script to exclude her), but fortunately they don't dwell on it and events move on quickly to where it doesn't really matter.

And we werent expecting it to be an alien movie! it was the nicest suprised in movies ive ever had. and the concept of alien was very new to me. Been waiting for this retro review for ages now. The grandfather of 80s machismo action cinema. It's aged like fine wine. I've watched this film more times than I can count, and it continues to get better with each passing year. If the concept of a masterpiece is gauged by how many times you can watch an expertly crafted film without it feeling like a chore (no matter how ridiculous the plot), I would consider Predator a masterpiece. Let's not forget that the final half hour of this film is damn near like a silent film. Unique for its time and even now.
I could be wrong but I remember hearing at one point in my life that the studio was constantly criticizing a supposed lack of "guns and violence/action" in the movie, which really annoyed John McTiernan, so he went and filmed that scene where they all fire into the jungle and made it purposely as over the top as could be to silence them.
The team wasting all that ammo to do little more than cut down some jungle brush ended up as one of the more pointed criticisms of United States foreign policy in this movie, and boy, are there a lot of them.

Arnold’s line delivery in this film is actually the best it’s ever been. He was extremely believable in his role and he deserves the credit for that. Not like what you guys said, that he’s trying and that’s what makes you like him. It’s more then that.

My favourite movie, I tell you why. It's intense not knowing when the predator will arrive and show itself makes it very errie. Over the top characters but they all seem to work as one, and have all different types of traits which make it more interesting. The music and score is incredible, it actually feels like your in that scernero feeling what the characters are feeling, and just the little crackles of the predator noises which pop up here and there are so cleaver and believable make it more intense an on edge. The predator, the way he moves and delivers his unique presence is done remarkably well, the guy in the suit really brought the character to life not just in the first movie even in number 2, and the costume is so cool with its gadgets makes you want to wear it yourself. Then there's arnie, the fight scene of just him vs the predator you actually believe what his actually doing ha, its classic arnie with the one liners and personality but it works. Then you have the jungle, where the predator can adapt to its surroundings and be on watch, which give you more insight into the predators motives and pleasure of hunting down these tough guys one by one for fun.

Nah i love the opening shot; how it gives off this very serious and eerie, slightly unsettling, otherworldly tone, before the music cranks up and transitions into a testosterone-fuelled jungle setting; right there it encapsulates the seamless blend of sci-fi and action, and it's a great juxtaposition of both the protagonist and antagonist touching down
In an interview Carl Weathers said when he realized he’d be working with Arnold he thought damn I better hit the gym pretty hard to make it believable he was on par with Arnold muscle wise to sell the macho-ness of Predator.
Predator is my favorite movie monster, i was never scared of him, and my brother loved the alien from alien. and we were teenagers when alien vs predator came out so we were hyped because we got to see who is the better monster. (even thought avp isnt the best movie) still holds a place in my heart.
The thing with basically any visual medium is that if the people making something in one are at all competent they don't need a single spoken word to show you what's going on or what you have to do.

Oh yeah, that might be my favorite performance of his and of course Tarantino is crazy as hell. They had really great chemistry together. This movie is the perfect marriage of Tarantino's writing and Rodriguez's direction, and that's what makes it so different. They work really well together. I love when movies completely change into something else as the plot progresses.
So after watching this review again today I realised that when the Predator took Billy's skull and spine as a trophy that maybe this was to show that in the fight that they had, Billy had backbone!!!
I actually re-watched both Predator and Predator 2 just lately. I agree with you guys, both movies, especially the first one are amazingly filmed and produced. Great story telling, action sequences, etc. A lot of modern Sci-fy movies could take lessons from these. I find modern action movies do way to many quick cuts and hand cams, you need long shots and silent sequences to make the action scenes stand out ant pop.
Them shooting into the jungle is a tactic to fight your way out of an ambush. One of them just go killed out of nowhere. The guy with the Mini-gun saw the movement of the Predator running away and started shooting at it. The rest of them joined him and fired in the direction of the ambush-er to kill, suppress or scare off their attacker or attackers. The Predator probably had to escape up into the forest canopy to not get mowed down then and there.
Predator 2 is actually my favorite of all the Predator movies. It’s sad Danny Glover didn’t get to star in more action movies on his own, he was great. It also has my favorite movie line ever: Danny Glover: “It’s okay! I’m a cop.” Old Lady: “I don’t think he gives a shit.”
I feel like the subtle story telling and not explaining every little detail really made this movie take a step up because like you said they didnt have some random character or exposition device sit down for 5 minutes and explain everything
I knew if I watched this channel long enough I would eventually see alien predators. I couldn't remember the name of the movie but I remember the crap brown VHS. This movie scared the hell out of me when I was little. The scene with the dogs eating that cow terrified me and I always wondered what movie that was. Thank you for letting me revisit my early childhood horrors. Lol I use to think that what ever the alien thing was in the movie lived under my stairs. Now I can watch it and laugh at how bad it was.
The thing about the whole macho men with massive muscles is that it works in the movies favor. When macho men with massive muscles get scared you can bet that the audience will feel that fear as well.

i worked in a movie theater when this was released and it never failed that at the end of the movie after the massive explosion and that triumphant music begins and the smoke clears to find Arnie standing there the audience burst out laughing
I'm just now getting around to watching this re:View in 2021, and oh man is it apocryphal at the end when they're talking about the then-as-yet-unreleased Shane Black movie 'The Predator', saying 'it's Shane Black, you can't go wrong', when all of us assumed it would be good... How sad it actually turned out to be! And a footnote, my favorite Predator reference is in the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost flick 'Paul', when the Seth Rogen-voiced alien does his Predator imitation... Great movie, in it's own weird way.
I had the privilege of watching this movie about 5 minutes after it started so I missed the entire space alien ship. That, in my opinion, made the movie a thousand times better. The same with From Dusk Till Dawn. I watched that movie with no knowledge about it beforehand. Very pleasant surprise for both movies.
What made predator a fascinating alien was that their "technology" allowed for space travel, but never went beyond basic survival. It's almost like they were once enlightened, but (perhaps following a cataclysm) devolved to a qusai-ritualistic species that worships hunting. Being forced to face "survival of the fittest" for countless generations before reclaiming some of their lost technology to hunt other species.

My favourite movie, I tell you why.
It's intense not knowing when the predator will arrive and show itself makes it very errie.
Over the top characters but they all seem to work as one, and have all different types of traits which make it more interesting.
The music and score is incredible, it actually feels like your in that scernero feeling what the characters are feeling, and just the little crackles of the predator noises which pop up here and there are so cleaver and believable make it more intense an on edge.
The predator, the way he moves and delivers his unique presence is done remarkably well, the guy in the suit really brought the character to life not just in the first movie even in number 2, and the costume is so cool with its gadgets makes you want to wear it yourself.
Then there's arnie, the fight scene of just him vs the predator you actually believe what his actually doing ha, its classic arnie with the one liners and personality but it works.
Then you have the jungle, where the predator can adapt to its surroundings and be on watch, which give you more insight into the predators motives and pleasure of hunting down these tough guys one by one for fun.
Predator was my first R film as a kid. Predator has killed me many times in my dreams. Great film. Great monster. Great nightmares.

Predator is a postmodern devolution of action movies. The people who can wade through any enemies with their weapons, are rendered useless. In the end it’s Arnold going primitive with sharp sticks.
What the fuck? The people's weapons are useless because they're up against laser and cloaking technology, all wrap in a being that can jump tree to tree. What are some great action movies before Predator? 60s, 70s, 80s James Bond? Lol.

This is so true. Going back to the 60s and 70s too there are some great movies where you can see the talent the director and crew had in setting up a shot/scene.
Nah i love the opening shot; how it gives off this very serious and eerie, slightly unsettling, otherworldly tone, before the music cranks up and transitions into a testosterone-fuelled jungle setting; right there it encapsulates the seamless blend of sci-fi and action, and it's a great juxtaposition of both the protagonist and antagonist touching down
In an interview Carl Weathers said when he realized he’d be working with Arnold he thought damn I better hit the gym pretty hard to make it believable he was on par with Arnold muscle wise to sell the macho-ness of Predator.

Predator is my favorite movie monster, i was never scared of him, and my brother loved the alien from alien. and we were teenagers when alien vs predator came out so we were hyped because we got to see who is the better monster. (even thought avp isnt the best movie) still holds a place in my heart.
The thing with basically any visual medium is that if the people making something in one are at all competent they don't need a single spoken word to show you what's going on or what you have to do.

Oh yeah, that might be my favorite performance of his and of course Tarantino is crazy as hell. They had really great chemistry together. This movie is the perfect marriage of Tarantino's writing and Rodriguez's direction, and that's what makes it so different. They work really well together. I love when movies completely change into something else as the plot progresses.
When I saw it as a kid, I thought it was the best film I`d ever seen.

So after watching this review again today I realised that when the Predator took Billy's skull and spine as a trophy that maybe this was to show that in the fight that they had, Billy had backbone!!!

Predator is a masterpiece imo. Admittedly I've seen it so many times I can recite the entire script from memory!
I actually re-watched both Predator and Predator 2 just lately. I agree with you guys, both movies, especially the first one are amazingly filmed and produced. Great story telling, action sequences, etc. A lot of modern Sci-fy movies could take lessons from these. I find modern action movies do way to many quick cuts and hand cams, you need long shots and silent sequences to make the action scenes stand out ant pop.

A lot of youtubers have covered Predator, but you have to love the obscure references Redlettermedia pulls, like Sven-Ole Thorsen, and "Nuff Said".
Them shooting into the jungle is a tactic to fight your way out of an ambush. One of them just go killed out of nowhere. The guy with the Mini-gun saw the movement of the Predator running away and started shooting at it. The rest of them joined him and fired in the direction of the ambush-er to kill, suppress or scare off their attacker or attackers. The Predator probably had to escape up into the forest canopy to not get mowed down then and there.
Two things u should’ve mentioned:
1. THE SOUNDTRACK- might b the most bone chilling music ever made.
2. Arnie deserves an Oscar for T-2.
Predator 2 is actually my favorite of all the Predator movies. It’s sad Danny Glover didn’t get to star in more action movies on his own, he was great.

P2 perhaps the most underrated film of all time.

I feel like the subtle story telling and not explaining every little detail really made this movie take a step up because like you said they didnt have some random character or exposition device sit down for 5 minutes and explain everything
I knew if I watched this channel long enough I would eventually see alien predators. I couldn't remember the name of the movie but I remember the crap brown VHS. This movie scared the hell out of me when I was little. The scene with the dogs eating that cow terrified me and I always wondered what movie that was. Thank you for letting me revisit my early childhood horrors. Lol I use to think that what ever the alien thing was in the movie lived under my stairs. Now I can watch it and laugh at how bad it was.
The thing about the whole macho men with massive muscles is that it works in the movies favor. When macho men with massive muscles get scared you can bet that the audience will feel that fear as well.
I just can't unsee how many times the actors flag their buddies with the muzzle of their weapons.
Tbh rewarched Predator 2 recently and it was cool as hell, very underrated movie

The only way to defeat the predator was through brains. Great reversal from the movie you expect to the movie it becomes.
i worked in a movie theater when this was released and it never failed that at the end of the movie after the massive explosion and that triumphant music begins and the smoke clears to find Arnie standing there the audience burst out laughing

I'm just now getting around to watching this re:View in 2021, and oh man is it apocryphal at the end when they're talking about the then-as-yet-unreleased Shane Black movie 'The Predator', saying 'it's Shane Black, you can't go wrong', when all of us assumed it would be good... How sad it actually turned out to be! And a footnote, my favorite Predator reference is in the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost flick 'Paul', when the Seth Rogen-voiced alien does his Predator imitation... Great movie, in it's own weird way.
It's about time they did a proper remaster of this on Blu Ray. Surely the original reels are still around to take some fresh prints.
This movie is solely comprised of classic 80's one-liners. There isn't even any real dialogue.
I had the privilege of watching this movie about 5 minutes after it started so I missed the entire space alien ship. That, in my opinion, made the movie a thousand times better. The same with From Dusk Till Dawn. I watched that movie with no knowledge about it beforehand. Very pleasant surprise for both movies.
Why would it matter starting late in From Dusk Til Dawn? Also, why are you late to movies all the time?
What made predator a fascinating alien was that their "technology" allowed for space travel, but never went beyond basic survival. It's almost like they were once enlightened, but (perhaps following a cataclysm) devolved to a qusai-ritualistic species that worships hunting. Being forced to face "survival of the fittest" for countless generations before reclaiming some of their lost technology to hunt other species.
