My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?

  • This video addresses the statements Jesus spoke from the cross. Jesus knew that all he needed to do was ask and God would send angels to help, but he accepted the path to his death. Jesus and the Jewish people knew the Old Testament and its teachings and they would have recognized the verses he cried out on the cross.
    Verses: Ps. 22:1-31; Matt. 27:26-53; John 16:32; 19:36
    Teacher: John Schoenheit

    This is why He said that we should love Him with all (Deuteronomy 6 vs 4) because of His plans for us and the extent that He would go, in order to redeem us back to Himself. Giving us a chance to know Him and experience that intimacy with Him. How then, can we not love Him back. Thank you Lord Jesus.

    I believe this sort of teaching needs to be spoken to the masses. So many have fallen into the "sin consciousness" trap which stops the main purpose of salvation in its tracks. Thank you so much for doing this teaching!

    Fantastic teaching ... thank you. John, you painted the picture perfectly ... Jesus on the cross, spectators (witnesses) watching, Jesus loudly yelling the first verse of Psalm 22 which everyone in that time knew by heart and automatically filled in the blanks. And then Jesus said the final verse of Psalm 22 which, in those witnesses brains must have been like an exploding exclamation point when the eyes of their understanding were blasted open and they understood that what they were witnessing and seeing with their own eyes was foretold by David a thousand years before.

    Yes. Jesus was quoting Psalms 22, but God also had to forsake Him. Not because Jesus took on all of the sins of the world, but in order for Jesus to be able to take on the sins of the world. God had to turn His face away from Jesus because it was the only way in which Jesus could take on all of the sins of the world. If God were there, there would not be any evil there due to God’s presence. But good message for people to know that He was also quoting Psalms 22.

    Sin separates us from God. The bible teaches us that God turns away from sin. Immediately before Christ's death he took on all of the sin of the world. At the time he made that statement he felt separated from God as he was covered in sin. In other words, he felt forsaken.

    • @admiralmurat2777
      @admiralmurat2777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Separates Us....... God still seeks after us. God doesn't run off and hide because someone sins.

    • @mr.e1220
      @mr.e1220 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the first man and woman sinned… who hid and Who searched? The man and woman hid in shame; God came looking for them despite their sin! Jesus later declared that “The Son of Man (Jesus) came to seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10). He did not avoid sinners. You are getting that from Habakkuk 1:13, “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.”
      These are words Habakkuk uses to describe God, not God’s own explanation of where he can and cannot look. God sees everything. Christ was quoting Psalm 22. It is victory over sin. It is finished. God never looked away from Christ. That comes from penal substitution theory.

    2022-02-14 ... Valentines Day
    "Thank you" for this video.
    My Christian faith has been devastated by my wife Katherine's abandoning our sacred Marriage.
    God the Father is all powerful, has miraculously intervened in the past to Resurrect the marriage. But not today, not for the past SEVEN weeks of forced separation. Agony. Bitter isolation.
    I too have been faithful, and tried extraordinary hard to be a Wonderful Christian Husband to the Katherine that I adore and cherish.
    I hav we asked The Lord, tonight included, to simply end my life, the pain is too great, and gone on for 18 months.
    Dear Lord Jesus Christ ... WHY WHY WHY are you silent, distant, apparently content to watch me dread every night, sleepless for hours?
    Christ has ALL POWER but apparently refuses to Resurrect Kathie and I's marriage.
    Please, please, Lord Jesus, do this "soon", before I lose ALL hope.
    .

    Actually Jesus was quite afraid. He prayed to His Father for the cup to be taken from Him if it is the will of His Father. However, Jesus was even more willing to do the will of His Father no matter what the cost. Matthew, Mark, and esp. Luke even shows how Jesus was scared.

    At the nineth hour, when Jesus said, "it is finished" the high priest is ending the slaying of the Passover lambs. When the high priest is through, he has blood all over him and his clothes from killing the sacrifices. The high priest raises his blood soaked hands towards heaven and says, "it is finished" (sacrifices are complete). The last lamb is the sacrifice for the priests.
    Each lamb had a tag around it's neck with the family name on it to identify the family. Jesus' cross had a sign from Pilate. If you take the first letter of each word on it, you have the Hebrew word "YHVA" THE NAME OF GOD on OUR PASSOVER LAMB! HALLELUJAH!!! AND AMEN!!! This is why the Sanhedrin were upset and wanted Pilate to change the wording. He refused, maybe he was "getting back at them" for forcing him to crucify Jesus whom he knew was innocent.
    The "INRI" on crucifixes today is for the phrase in Latin. It was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.

    After reading psalm 22 I understand that it was not the holiness of God the father getting away from Jesus because our sin, He was pointing the attention to this messianic psalm.

    According to the Gospel of Mark, Jesus did cry out Psalm 22:1. But it was said in fear and confusion. It was not merely a fulfillment of prophesy. He was scared to death. These were words of fear. For the first time he felt alone. He was so strong up to this point. But he lost it. He completely lost it. He finally realized God was not going to take him off that cross and save him from death in his very last moment. He was terrified, as any man would be. But he truly was the Son of God.

    Read 22nd Ps. This was Jesus's Psalms, why would He not as was the custom of the day recite aloud the first and last verse as the people in the temple would read or silently recite verse- It was by faith in His Father His work was accomplished. KJV Ps 22 ending with "that He hath done this" also rendered as "It is finished" He as our Example had complete faith in His Father as we are expected to have complete Faith. Read this for yourself and the Holy Spirit will bring you into all truth when you sincerely ask Him.

    This was good. I struggle, however, with your claim that "God does not forsake people because of sin." Are we not all born into an abandoned, forsaken state because of our sin and are in need of being rescued? Didn't Jesus become alienated and punished on our behalf so we could be reconciled? If God does not forsake people because of sin, why did Jesus have to go through the cross? Now, this is quite a bit different from God forsaking someone who is already born-again...I don't believe a person can be rejected once they're saved. So, I want to agree, but I think a blanket statement like that can be misleading.

    such a great explanation. I wrote a blog on this passage and I entitled it "Psalms 22 Checkmate To The Devil". In my own mind I imagine that possibly the Devil thought he had defeated Christ.....mankind had taken their Messiah/King and rejected Him and even killed Him.....he must have thought victory was his......until he heard those words....."Eli Eli Lama Sabachthani".....and to the learned Jews who had memorized scriptures word for word.....it must have hit some of them like a ton of bricks.....and to the faithful it must have been the most encouraging phrase ever.....and to the unbeliever it could be just the final piece needed to convince them that this has all been carefully planned. Thanks again for your clear explanation of this passage.....I never knew the part about the "It is finished" being actually part of the passage. Great stuff!

    This was a helpful video, and a satisfying answer to this puzzling question. However, I would humbly offer one historical correction.
    Crucifixion was a widely established method of execution that dates back at least as far as the Bablyonians (6th Century) and would have been well known to the author of the earliest (first 29) Psalms 100 years later, as it was the Bablyonian destruction of Jerusalem that serves as the demarcation between the early and later Psalms.

    so you are saying that Jesus said "My God why have you forsaken me" simply to point people to the fact that Jesus was fulfilling Messianic prophecy and was the Messiah?
    that still doesn't explain WHY the question was asked in the first place (Psalm) -- DID God forsake Jesus on the cross or not ??

    • @Mathew247
      @Mathew247 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand your reasoning. I was a dispensationalist for over 20 years. Yes, God was finished with the "Israel of the flesh". You're reading dispensationalism into the text. If you are Christ's, THEN you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise.
      Are you asserting that God saves people simply because they're Jewish? Jesus has torn down the middle wall of partition making them "one new man in Christ". For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek. Circumcision counts for nothing but a new creature. The true Jew is not one who is circumcised outwardly but one who is circumcised of the heart.
      Go back and read the parables and believe Jesus when He tells them "therefore the kingdom will be taken from you and given to nation that bears it's fruit".
      Even John the baptist knew that being a physical descendant of Abraham wasn't enough.

    Yahweh's literal genetic SON Yahshua never said He was Yahweh. IF Yahshua said He was Yahweh THEN He committed BLASPHEMY against His literal genetic Father. Matt. 3: 17. Yahweh baptised his literal genetic SON Yahshua with the Holy Spirit. Acts 2: 33, Yahweh baptised His literal genetic SON Yahshua with Promised Holy Spirit when He was 30 Years old. Yahweh's literal genetic SON Yahshua walked this earth for 30 WITHOUT the Promised Holy Spirit. This proves that Yahweh is THE Creator. 1 Tim. 2: 5. WHEN asked WHO He was , He said:" Mark. 14: 61- 62." All who say Yahshua is Yahweh are Antichrist. Yahweh sent His literal genetic SON Yahshua in the corruptible body of humanity. This proves that Yahshua is Yahweh's literal genetic SON. 1 Tim. 6: 16. This scripture tells Us that Yahweh ALONE has immortality. Immortality CANNOT DIE. Yahweh's literal genetic SON Yahshua died. Yahshua received the wages of sin. The wages of sin is the SOUL out of existence. Rev. 20: 14- 15. Eze. 18: 4 and 20. To say otherwise is to be Antichrist. 1 John 4: 2- 3. Yahweh's literal genetic SON Yahshua said:" John 14: 28. " Yahshua said to Mary:" John 20 : 17". Yahshua's Father is My Father. yahshua's GOD Yahweh is My GOD. Yahweh, Yahshua and i are ONE. John 17: 20- 26. May Yahweh give you all the understanding he knows you need to stand before his literal genetic SON Yahshua in all HOLINESS on that great day of Yahweh Almighty GLORIFIED for all the world to see. Heb. 12: 14. Bless you.

      Beacuse they used the book of daniel and ezekiel and they thought the messiah is one strong person and become king and destroy all romans and free israel .but this part of prophecy is for second coming of christ not for first time .they confuced little .and also the prophecy the messiah will come in donkey to jursalem .how its possible one man in this time or in future ride donkey and come in city 😂😂.this is clearly shows this one is for first coming of christ but they didnt understand now.beacuse god didnt said two time messiah will come .god just get prophecy to prophets but its like puzzle .but in iseiah and psalm very clearly shows the messiah will die .but this part is for first coming not second coming.jews now say messiah will come and defeat his enemy and he will die .they think all of this prophecy will come at the same time about messiah

    I thought God was Jesus.. so.. He sent himself to die for himself to cure us of a sin that we didn't do. Instead of just .. forgiving us by commanding it?!

    those 3 are different traditions or 'schools of thought' within one religion; Christianity
    another name for that is 'Denomination'
    it's kinda difficult to explain why there are so many 'strains' or 'expressions' of Christianity, but it's partly to do with the focus and goal of each tradition - and also their geographical beginnings, and also on disagreements over certain issues
    oh, and yes i'm afraid that many denominations consider other traditions to be sinful in their practises

    Your explanation makes the quote less valuable to me. I saw this as a sign that jesus had human traits, that he was faulty as well like the rest of us, but he over came. To me it showed that Jesus was also human, and functioned as a symbol to me that even jesus faultered at one point, but he came back and god forgave him, like he will forgive us. Jesus felt the same doubts we all do. To me this gives strenth.

    from looking at the ABOUT section "What We Believe" section, it seems you don't believe in the Trinity and that Jesus is God.
    Are you part of "The Way International"?

    You talk about two persons, Jesus and God, you talk about Jesus having a dialog with his father, that is not one, that is two.

    I enjoyed the video. This explanation is virtually in line with Pope John Paul II, although Blessed John Paul II goes into the theology deeper. I did enjoy this man's explanation. I would encourage you to search "my God, my God and John Paul II" for a deeper understanding of Jesus' "Why" and Psalm 22.

      You have to look at it spiritually.... everyone before they come to the Lord is spiritually poor, broken, in prisoned by sins and burdens.... ask the Holy Spirit to open up your spiritual eyes and ears to hear what the Spirit has to say to you the church. Jesus bless you with wisdom and understanding in Jesus mighty name Amen ❤️❤️❤️

      Luke 8 verse 21 Bible - Jesus often talked of his lack of material things such as Luke 9:58: "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." As far as a verse of Jesus giving to someone in need, an actual event, look to any of his miracles-the lame walk, the deaf hear, the blind see, the dead live. Read for yourself the Bible. Open your mind and heart.

    The Christians don't say Jesus is the son of the Father, they say he is the "Son of God" which implies that the Father is already a complete God without Jesus, i.e. Jesus is not a necessity part of God.And in retrospect, if Jesus is fully God and coequal with the father, why Christians would not refer to the Father as the " Father of God" as they do for Jesus!
