Hi Drummers! Thanks for watching! Want more grooves like this? Please visit www.drumlessons... for downloadable links and info on the DLG double DVD :)
I'm a drum teacher from England and I have seen several videos explaining the Rosanna shuffle and this is the clearest and easiest to understand. Great job.
Thank you. Your another version of someone trying to teach this tough beat. Thank for the tips. I'm about 75% there with something you mentioned in the hand and hat. But then you have to swing it. This has been the toughest beat I've ever tried.
I'm a drummer Gina, not only do you have the groove down your a great teacher. I'm not surprised i'm just telling you the truth. Thanks for the post I really enjoyed it. JOHNNY
I have a mutual friend who knew the family well and he was amazed.I highly doubt I'm the only one who wanted the video to keep going and hear you sing the rest of the song
This is the lesson I actually learned the groove from many months back, while my eight year old daughter begged me over and over to buy a pink snare like Gina's (kinda looks pink in the video :-) and I have never been back to thank you. So a big thank you Gina! Subscribed!!
Very impressive. Jeff Porcaro is my favourite drummer and his half time shuffle is every drummers gem. Expert explanation on his shuffle. A very very good video. Jeff would be proud! 😀
Gina - Thank you for presenting this in a different enough fashion than the rest of the teachers. It speaks to me more than most of the others and there is so much clarity in your drums and vocals. Cheers!
Now I understand the reason for the unique drumming. I thought was a jazz signature. Ah, you tube makes life easier. That's fine your bringing a great song into a better understanding. Thanks Gina!
I've watched a lot of tutorials on the half-time shuffle, and I think I finally understand it. I dunno...maybe I'm just dense, but this really clarifies it for me. Thank you, Miss Gina.
Excellent presentation! The best explanation on what the left hand is doing when playing Rosanna. The alternative groove is not a Rosanna groove, but, it is an excellent rhythm in its own right.
+Gina Knight, excellent explanation of this modified Purdie shuffle. Breaking down the mechanics of a particular rhythm is always important to understand how all the parts come together. I found that not matter how much explaining there is of the ghosting part, it will eventually come naturally. The hi-hat triplet naturally demands that the "&" be filled. Most player will ghost the "&" without realizing. This is what happened to me back in the late 70's when I was learning Bonham's modified Purdie shuffle from "Fool in the Rain". I naturally ghosted the "&" because the flow of the muscles and rhythm demanded it; I couldn't help but ghost that note. Again... EXCELLENT mechanical break down of this beat!
Props to the teacher in this video and all the drummers out there. As a bass player this song looks like a hand full for a drummer.. I can probably do something equivalent to this with fingers, but when it comes to whole limbs I am just going to defer to you guys! Props!!!!
So my band's audio engineer used to be a drummer and is a huge Toto fan. I'm gonna blow his mind during our next sound check ;P Thanks for posting, even if I am a little belated haha.
You are kick ass! I am so tempted to gush "marry me..." and go on and on about how I love your personality, etc ---- but I'm not ---- I am going to say, GREAT TUTORIAL. You are a powerful drummer and teacher. Bravo!
Not sure how I was watching Curb Your Enthusiasm clips and ended up here. But glad I did. I don’t play an instrument, but now I spend way too much time watching Steve Stein play guitar and now you playing drums, lol. Would be great if you and Steve made a video together.
You play drums well. This tutorial helps my ear learn the basics well. I liked the sound of that back beat on three, especially when you can add a crash cymbal to it. To be honest, my favorite part of this video is when you sang. You have sweet vocals, and when you talk you have a pleasant voice. It's like a soothing radio voice really. Thanks for sharing video. Great help.
Hey Ryan! Just a quick thank you for your wonderful comments this morning! You really made my day. Thanks a lot for watching, and I hope the vids help. U2! Yes....def some elements of the disco in his playing for sure. Oh, and thanks for the compliment on my voice! "This is the drum talk radio hour.....Yeah........" lol ;)
Gina Knight Your very welcome. I'm glad you liked the feedback. And yes, your videos help a lot, And yeah, again there are 2 U2 songs that I really liked ( more than that to be honest) , one of them the drum intro opened up the song, when that snare kicked in and some feedback from the guitar and some other song the guy has a simple technique with the snare I like I mentioned in early reply Through my headphones which sound pretty good, that drummers snare kinda sounded like yours. Maybe I'm crazy LoL but your playing in that 10 seconds reminded me of that drummer. Anyways keep rockin' young lady. Peace.
I have been trying to figure this out on my own and failing. Thank you so much for breaking it down. I cant play it up to speed yet but got the basic groove. YOU ARE AWESOME
love this song..love Jeff Pacaro. he played on two of my favorite tune. Lido Shuffle and anything Toto..lol. great job and love that you have fun with it. :)
Thank you Thank you Thank you, Gina! I've been playing 40 plus years and it's something I never bothered learning. Don't ask why...I just didn't. I've been watching Benard Purdie videos to get the concept. Watched Pecario's video and it still feels so awkward. Listened to Bonham's fool in the rain isolated track. Of all the videos, you explained the best and I got the most out of your video. Got a chuckle out of me when you ripped into Roseanna. Thanks again!
Hello Gina :) I'm a Guitar player too (as someone just said in the comments below), but I play Drums too (always loved it so much! :D ) and I really liked your lesson, since "TOTO" is one of my fave band and "Rosanna" one of their best tune ever! ;) Really nice job! :)
I just noticed that you have an A Custom Zildjian cymbal! that's awesome! love it! Thanks for sharing this awesome drum lesson! Take care and have a nice day Ma'am.
Hi Gina! Great stuff - what a great lesson & presentation, your examples are very easy to understand. One thing you neglected to mention with regard to the right hand is - the first/last triplet notes on the right hand are executed normally (down-lift-down) like any shuffle when doing half-time shuffles at slow or medium tempos (Fool in the Rain, Babylon Sisters/Home at Last, Toto's These Chains, etc). However, the emphasis of the "muscle stroke" shifts when you reach a tempo as fast as Rosanna. In order for the groove to happen without strain on the right hand, the right hand emphasis shifts so the LAST note and FIRST note of each triplet become double bounce strokes (instead of down-lift-down, it becomes "stroke-double-lift-double"). The left hand still ghosts the middle note of each triplet, back beat is still on 3. Switching to these right-handed double strokes for Rosanna eliminates the need to resort to your final example (a creative alternative!) - because right-hand strain due to excessive speed is no longer an issue. I hope this makes sense to you and your students, it's so difficult to describe it using text! All the best - Vinnie

The best lesson of Rosanna Shuffle that I've ever seen! Congrats, Gina!
I have a mutual friend who knew the family well and he was amazed.I highly doubt I'm the only one who wanted the video to keep going and hear you sing the rest of the song
Everyone has their own method of explaining and teaching, which is why another explanation is always necessary. Good job.
Thank you Robert!
My, I love this girl. Flat out the best drum teacher on TH-cam, in my opinion. She breaks the beat down to easy to follow basics. Great job Gina!
+Gary Chappell Hey-eee!!! Thanks so much for saying that Gary!!! ;)
This is the lesson I actually learned the groove from many months back, while my eight year old daughter begged me over and over to buy a pink snare like Gina's (kinda looks pink in the video :-) and I have never been back to thank you. So a big thank you Gina! Subscribed!!

Thank YOU Tony!!! :)
How come I'm only the 400,000th person to find your great drum lessons, "Oh, Gina, oh Gina !"
Gina - Thank you for presenting this in a different enough fashion than the rest of the teachers. It speaks to me more than most of the others and there is so much clarity in your drums and vocals. Cheers!

Gina my dear you are a excellent teacher. That double handed variation on the hi-hat was great. keep up the good work.
Now I understand the reason for the unique drumming.
I thought was a jazz signature.

I've watched a lot of tutorials on the half-time shuffle, and I think I finally understand it. I dunno...maybe I'm just dense, but this really clarifies it for me. Thank you, Miss Gina.
Nice to see a YT video using an excellent vocal mic.
Excellent presentation! The best explanation on what the left hand is doing when playing Rosanna. The alternative groove is not a Rosanna groove, but, it is an excellent rhythm in its own right.
This is really the Best explanation of PorcaroS famous "halftime shuffle" I've seen... Your a good drummer, and cute to!
I bit my tongue trying to play that haha ...great video greetings from Argentina.
+Marcos Salvatierra Be careful!! ;) xoxo hahahaa Thanks! Hugs from USA
The only thing stopping this from being the best video drum lesson of all time is a printable notation transcription.
Brilliant. Tough groove, but it does make a lot more sense now. Thank you. :-)
Your drumming is awesome, but your voice is to die for.
5:02 That's my favorite part of the video honestly. great video!

Again... EXCELLENT mechanical break down of this beat!

Why not just watch Jeff Porcaro's lesson on how to play it? When he plays it he seems to go to a different place and out comes the groove.

This snare pattern was something I was struggling with. You've explained this one absolutely amazing, thank you :)

Terrific video and I like the vintage Rogers snare.
Thank you Thank you Thank you, Gina! I've been playing 40 plus years and it's something I never bothered learning. Don't ask why...I just didn't. Gina, you're really a great drummer, but it's especially cool that you're a good teacher, that's a whole other talent!
Apart from the snare, and the weird part about the double handed 16ths...
A trick : watch series at flixzone. Been using them for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Jude Jon Yup, been watching on flixzone} for months myself :D
@Jude Jon yup, been watching on flixzone} for since december myself :)
@Jude Jon Definitely, I've been watching on Flixzone} for since november myself :)
Had to subscribe because of all the cuteness... and the drumming.
Actually played properly. Good lesson and well done!
This is the best explanation of this beat that I’ve seen. I love to watch Bernard Purdie’s explanation video, but it can’t help anyone.
Hi Gina! Great stuff - what a great lesson & presentation, your examples are very easy to understand.
