Jeff, it’s also worth pointing out that another Dartmouth student, Bond Almand, just broke the pan American cycling record, cycling from the north of Alaska to the southern tip of Argentina in 75 days!!
Man collegiate racing was such a vibe. I loved seeing people show up with bikes that were almost as old as the riders. Glad they're still using this course. My only critique is that there were 2 UVM riders and 0 pairs of jorts...
It looked like the right side of the road on the bottom straight had some really poor pavement quality. Everyone seemed to stay on the left for that part of the course.
looked rideable still, people were there throughout. also may be even more reason to ride there, choice lines in bad pavement means even less people benefitting from your draft.
I raced in the B’s that same day on that course and that pavement was absolutely terrible on the right side. Lots of flats. Nobody wanted to be over there. There was also a cement block in the final corner with a 2 inch lip that was in the perfect line. That being said, very fun course. (Could have mentioned this was like 3 years ago lol.)
I would have liked to see some more footage of him further back in the pack to see what other riders were doing. We're all use to watching Jeff race and people race against Jeff, but for context it'd be nice to see what the rest of the field is like.
What camera did he use? That footage has a pleasing perspective. One more facing aft would be nice. Someone needs to invent a windshield wiper for action cameras.
That's my home crit course, the right side of the road used to have very poor pavement, virtually unrideable gravel, when this video was taken, that's why all the racers stayed on the left side. This stretch has since been repaved, hopefully allowing for some better race conditions if Army brings the crit back to campus.
Is Wells related to Kirk Willett? pro rider in early 2000's with Mercury and Prime Alliance. Thanks always for making these informative videos Jeff. Great instruction.
I was thinking the same thing. I teach all our riders to watch out for anyone like that who can't hold a straight line. They have a much higher propensity for crashing and taking you out. You learn to identify them and then make sure you aren't behind them.
I think he was in the right side of the road, all the riders took the same line simply because it was the shortest path to approach a 90º plus enclosed turn from the wide side, now I don't crit race much less coach only suggesting it sounds weird to me without reasoning why and you insisted a lot and he won without trouble in that particular section.
At about 4:30 Wells passes the rider who was in 1st place and then slips directly in front on him to allow the other rider to put in less work to catch up :(

insane 🤯
What are they feeding these Dartmouth kids? 🫡
Indeed had a lot to learn (and still do). Armed forces that summer was humbling!
Thanks for sharing your footage Wells!
great job
Footage is a little older because of that Army kit, but I love racing on this course.
Its from spring 2022
Raced this course at West Point while riding for Penn State wayyyyy back in 1989!
LETS GOOO Wells making it on the channel finally, showing out for the ECCC!
Lots of rim brake bikes and Wells needs a rear facing camera! Fun video!

@@jordanmiller42 I definitely raced my first collegiate season on a frame that was a full 3 years older than I was lmao
@pssita The land of CAAD vs Allez is fast and dangerous.
2022 footage
Love that Cannondale / paint scheme.
matchy matchy socks is the chef's kiss

he literally never fell back into the pack lol, dude is strong.
@@NorCalCycling Wow, that made me tired just reading it.

West Point is sooooo beautiful. Very nice!!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bike move around under a rider more than that orange Allied did under that UVM rider

Got that last corner like boss though. 😉
Prettt sure this is from a few years ago where Wells went to win the Collegiate National RR! Love to see it Wells!
11:20 pitt rider goes for the high five, he goes for the fist bump which honestly, I think the fist bump is the safer option at 30 mph

He's known as "Wells will winnit" round these parts
West Point! Brings back memories
Nice!
Also how about going super wide through the final corner every lap so you can potentially pedal through it at 300+ watts?
High risk move at 60kph. The pedal strike isn't worth it.
@@pavement_menaceshort cranks ftw
More fan footage please, Jeff.
He is gonna kick your ass regardless of learning shit.
The road looks super chunky on the far right side.
Collegiate competition isnt that thick this year, especially now that spencer is gone.
