It's the *kind* of thing he wrote, but (unless I accidentally did so) I wasn't quoting him.
Considering the Mi-Go (fungus monsters from space who build things from fungus; among others), building things with bones (a recurring motif for his spooky stuff), ashes (generally seen as "bad stuff has happened" when they appear), and his tendency to look at large ancient constructions as "cyclopean" I thought adding a dash of "furtive," "tepid," and "squamous" would sound a tad like something he wrote... :D

I have for a time considered whether it wouldn't be possible to genetically modify something like oyster mushrooms with animal genes for bone production so that they would mineralize their mycelium (similar to fibrodysplacia, but for fungus). Then you could just stack straw bales infused with spores, lime (oyster mushrooms actually naturally tolerate lime and it is sometimes used to give them a head start over other fungi and bacterium and would provide this strain with calcium) and phosphorus. Then you would just water your tower of straw and wait for it to turn into a lightweigth bone fibre structure.
The modified fungus probably wouldn't do well in nature so no real risk of bone logs out in the woods.

    • @Foxiepawstotti

I saw some Bill Gates foundation vid where they showed how passing CO2 over wet concrete before placement is a way make it both stronger and more green, but towers made of bone sounds too cool to pass up so idk

Hey Nice Video. Just wanted to ask why not use wood as a building material. As I see it, it is the most eco-friendly IF HARVETED SUSTAINABLE. The area where a mature tree is chopped down can be used to plant a new one, the carbon stored within the harvested wood is not released but stored for as long as the building stands, wood can nowadays be manufactured in a way to decrease the fire hazard to a minimum and to build quite tall structures and so on. So if the transport way of the wood is not to long it might not only have no carbon emission, but it might even have a negative one.

First of all, bone building = yes. Second, this is very inspiring and has sparked a couple ideas- please tell me why these won't work, I'm fully aware I don't know what I'm talking about! 1) We have scrubbers that can remove more or less whatever we want from the air, they just produce more harmful emissions in their operation than they can scrub out of the air- not worth it. They spit out a block of carbon and... could we not just use that in place of concrete? Would that be worth the energy it takes to produce them vs what it takes to make concrete anyway? 2) Why not use predictable human movement to generate energy, especially if we're already spending the energy to move anyway? Example: a bridge or section of road with tension to pull it up at an arbitrary load- say, half the bridge's capacity. As long as 1/2 or less capacity is on the bridge, it rises to its top position, drawing air into large bags underneath, like air-ride suspension in a car. As rush hour comes the weight increases, the air is compressed and forced out in a usable, capture-able stream, and when rush hour is over the tension pulls the bridge back up. This is just an example of the basic concept and I've got no doubt there are much more efficient ways this could be used- but since we're burning the energy to move our cars in the first place, could we not use that semi-predictable weight differential to get some of it back for minimal cost? Sorry for the long comment, thanks for reading!

I love the comment: 'It's stronger than some types of concrete.' Yea, the types that are not suitable for structural applications.
And cost is an important factor. If you build an apartment building out of more expensive structural materials then the occupants will have to pay the rents of a luxury building without getting any of the luxuries.
Remember that it's the occupants of a building who will be the ones paying for it. And if you want them to pay higher rents for a building that's more expensive to make - then that money has to come from the occupants customers in the form of higher prices.
Remember that every tax and additional cost paid by a business is passed onto it's customers. So what percent of your income are you willing to give up in return for these buildings?

@@beth8775 No - it's: 'lets be realistic about whether or not an idea's practical.'
And let's pay attention to what they say. When they say "some types of concrete" - that should be a red flag. If it were superior to the formulations of concrete used for structural applications - they would have said so.
And 'newer' does not necessarily mean 'better.' The heavy machine-gun used by the US military is the M2 machine-gun. This model has been in service for over 100 years. There have been three programs to replace their with a more modern machine-gun. Only one of those (the M-85 machine-gun) made it into service.
And guess what the replacement for the M-85 was? The M2. And I was one of the people who had to use the: (insert your choice of curse word here) M85.

Im surprised AirCrete wasn't mentioned. Its basically regular concrete infused with air bubbles, usually from some sort of foaming agent. As far as I understand it has less of an impact on the environment, it insulates better(probably also mitigates against cracks from freezing due to that) and its very easy to produce with some cheap equipment. Its biggest drawback is that much like regular concrete it doesn't have a lot of tensile strength, but you can overcome that with fabric in the aircrete, just like regular concrete uses rebar.

It might require a hard outer stucco with similar expansion characteristics to the rammed-earth itself, and it might even require steel framing as the actual structural support with rammed-earth walls as the barriers to keep outside environment out, but rammed-earth is a surprisingly resilient construction technique in suitable climates.

I'm actually writing a scifi novel that takes place on a planet that was terraformed. Because pf this, there are some recourse options that aren't available on the planet. I've been working out the makeup of their location. Mainly what is made in what area. And I realized I need some substitutes. An alternative to plastic, concrete and wood. If anyone would be interested in kind of picking through the issues and helping me work out my options, that would be a huge help. They don't have to be presently viable. It just needs to feasible. Where possible, I would like to showcase things we could be using now, but otherwise, I need things that will work on a large scale, and be replenish able. The biggest one is a plastic alternative.
